The association between longitudinal declines in speech sound accuracy and speech intelligibility in speakers with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

The purpose of this study was to examine how neurodegeneration secondary to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) impacts speech sound accuracy over time and how speech sound accuracy, in turn, is related to speech intelligibility. Twenty-one participants with ALS read the Bamboo Passage over multiple data collection sessions across several months. Phonemic and orthographic transcriptions were completed for all speech samples. The percentage of phonemes accurately produced was calculated across each phoneme, sound class (i.e. consonants versus vowels), and distinctive feature (i.e. features invo

Intelligibility of bone-conducted speech detected on the scalp assessed by mono-syllable articulation and speech transmission index.

Bone-conduction microphones (BCMs) can detect speaker's voices with high signal-to-noise ratio even under extremely noisy environments. However, it is sometimes accompanied by discomfort and esthetic problems because BCMs are ordinarily attached to the front of the neck (larynx). In order to solve such problems, we have been developing a novel BCM systems built in a hard hat [2]. To develop this BCM system, characteristic of bone-conducted speech detected on the scalp need to be clarified. In this study, intelligibilities of bone-conducted speech detected at several locations on the head and n

The relationship between the intelligibility of time-compressed speech and speech in noise in young and elderly listeners.

A conventional measure to determine the ability to understand speech in noisy backgrounds is the so-called speech reception threshold (SRT) for sentences. It yields the signal-to-noise ratio (in dB) for which half of the sentences are correctly perceived. The SRT defines to what degree speech must be audible to a listener in order to become just intelligible. There are indications that elderly listeners have greater difficulty in understanding speech in adverse listening conditions than young listeners. This may be partly due to the differences in hearing sensitivity (presbycusis), hence audib

Advantages of Fluctuating Noise for Measuring Speech Intelligibility in Listeners With Hearing Loss.

Measures of speech intelligibility in noise show limited correspondence with difficulties people with hearing loss report from daily life. This mismatch suggests that standard measurement conditions do not sufficiently capture aspects that are relevant for speech perception, such as dip listening and spatial release from masking. In the present study we developed and evaluated a test condition that incorporates these aspects and compared it with a standard condition. Speech intelligibility was measured in 100 participants with normal hearing (NH, N=17) and hearing loss (HL, N=83) ranging from

Vowel space change as a predictor of speech intelligibility gain in Down syndrome.

Reduced intelligibility is a frequent characteristic of the speech of children with Down syndrome (DS). While it is documented that compressed vowel space is often associated with low intelligibility, few studies have examined how acoustic vowel space changes during speech enrichment interventions are related to functional intelligibility gains. This study investigated whether change in acoustic vowel space can predict intelligibility improvement in DS. Thirteen children with DS completed a naturalistic speech enrichment intervention and were included in the present analysis. Vowel productions

Speech intelligibility of children with an auditory brainstem implant: a triple-case study.

Auditory brainstem implantation (ABI) is a relative recent development in paediatric hearing restoration. Consequently, young-implanted children's productive language has not received much attention. This study investigated speech intelligibility of children with ABI (N = 3) in comparison to children with cochlear implants (CI) and children with typical hearing (TH). Spontaneous speech samples were recorded from children representing the three groups matched on cumulative vocabulary level. Untrained listeners (N = 101) rated the intelligibility of one-word utterances on a continuous scale and

Speech intelligibility and subjective benefit in single-sided deaf adults after cochlear implantation.

Treatment with cochlear implants (CIs) in single-sided deaf individuals started less than a decade ago. CIs can successfully reduce incapacitating tinnitus on the deaf ear and allow, so some extent, the restoration of binaural hearing. Until now, systematic evaluations of subjective CI benefit in post-lingually single-sided deaf individuals and analyses of speech intelligibility outcome for the CI in isolation have been lacking. For the prospective part of this study, the Bern Benefit in Single-Sided Deafness Questionnaire (BBSS) was administered to 48 single-sided deaf CI users to evaluate th

Speech based transmission index for all: An intelligibility metric for variable hearing ability.

A method to measure the speech intelligibility in public address systems for normal hearing and hearing impaired persons is presented. The proposed metric is an extension of the speech based Speech Transmission Index to account for accurate perceptual masking and variable hearing ability: The sound excitation pattern generated at the ear is accurately computed using an auditory filter model, and its shapes depend on frequency, sound level, and hearing impairment. This extension yields a better prediction of the intensity of auditory masking which is used to rectify the modulation transfer func

Speech onset enhancement improves intelligibility in adverse listening conditions for cochlear implant users.

Speech perception by cochlear implant (CI) users can be very good in quiet but their speech intelligibility (SI) performance decreases in noisy environments. Because recent studies have shown that transient parts of the speech envelope are most important for SI in normal-hearing (NH) listeners, the enhanced envelope (EE) strategy was developed to emphasize onset cues of the speech envelope in the CI signal processing chain. The influence of enhancement of the onsets of the speech envelope on SI was investigated with CI users for speech in stationary speech-shaped noise (SSN) and with an interf

Comparison of three hearing aid fittings using the Speech Intelligibility Rating (SIR) Test.

This study compared the effects of three different hearing aids on subjective ratings of speech intelligibility. Insertion gain measurements on KEMAR indicated that the hearing aid fittings differed primarily in midfrequency gain. The test passages of the Speech Intelligibility Rating Test (SIR) were recorded onto tape through each hearing aid. The processed passages were presented monaurally to 13 subjects with hearing loss limited to frequencies above 2000 Hz. They rated five passages through each frequency responses (FR) in a randomized order. Each subject was retested within 2 or 3 days to

The effect of rate control on the intelligibility and naturalness of dysarthric speech.

Speaking rates of individuals with severe ataxic dysarthria (n = 4) and severe hypokinetic dysarthria (n = 4) were reduced to 60% and 80% of habitual rates using four different pacing strategies (Additive Metered, Additive Rhythmic, Cued Metered, and Cued Rhythmic). Effects of rate control on sentence and phoneme intelligibility and speech naturalness were examined. Sentence intelligibility improved for both groups, with metered pacing conditions associated with the largest improvement in scores. Similar improvements as speaking rates were reduced were not seen for the phoneme intelligibility

Marking word boundaries to improve the intelligibility of the speech of the deaf.

Speech of deaf talkers has often been characterized as staccato, leading to the perception of improper grouping of syllables. In an attempt to compensate for this syllabication, word boundaries of 30 sentences spoken by 10 deaf children were acoustically marked by means of silent pauses with a duration of 160 ms inserted between words. Subsequent tests with normal-hearing listeners demonstrated that after insertion of pauses the intelligibility of the sentences increased significantly (p less than .01) from 27% to 31%. A control measure showed that this increase was not merely due to a general

The Temporal Resolution Needed for Speech Intelligibility Assessed with Mosaic Speech: Effects of Block Duration, Age, and Word Familiarity.

Background/Objectives: Mosaic speech was used to further investigate the auditory system's temporal resolution needed for speech intelligibility. Mosaic speech is a form of degraded speech segmented in frequency × time blocks with no discernible temporal fine structure and with degraded amplitude envelope cues. Methods: We performed a listening experiment with mosaic speech consisting of 20 frequency bands segmented into 20, 40, 80, 160, and 320 ms. Younger listeners (<25 years; n = 20), with self-reported normal hearing and having passed a limited screening test, and elderly listeners (>65 ye

Spatial AI improves speech intelligibility for hearing aid wearers in challenging multitalker noise.

OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the Spatial AI model on the Fortell AI hearing aids to see if it improves speech intelligibility in single-azimuth multitalker babble relative to a commercially available control hearing aid employing neural-network-based noise-reduction. DESIGN: In a pre-registered, double-blind, randomised controlled trial, hearing aid users completed a QuickSIN test wearing the Fortell and control devices. Both devices were set to maximise directionality and noise reduction. Objective metrics were also calculated. SAMPLE: Thirty adults with mild to moderately-severe bilateral senso

Investigating the maximum bite force and speech intelligibility in patients requiring prosthetic rehabilitation.

PURPOSE: Tooth loss leads to reduced occlusal contact area, altered jaw biomechanics, and diminished neuromuscular coordination, impairing both masticatory function and speech clarity. Edentulous patients often adapt by modifying food choices or swallowing behavior and may experience persistent phonetic disturbances. Maximum bite force affects masticatory performance, while speech intelligibility affects patient communication. This study aimed to objectively evaluate maximum bite force and speech intelligence among completely edentulous patients rehabilitated with different types of prostheses

Phonetic Intelligibility Testing in Developmental Motor Speech Disorders: a Preliminary Tool in Hebrew.

BACKGROUND: Speech intelligibility is a core outcome in the assessment and treatment of individuals with developmental motor speech disorders. While open-set intelligibility testing is widely used, a closed-set phonetic intelligibility assessment, which evaluates listener perception of systematically varied speech contrasts, offers a focused approach to identifying segmental errors that impact intelligibility. However, such tools are unavailable in Hebrew. AIMS: This study introduces a novel, preliminary closed-set phonetic intelligibility tool designed for Hebrew speakers with development mo

Measuring speech intelligibility with deaf and hard-of-hearing children: A systematic review.

There is great variability in the ways in which the speech intelligibility of d/Deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children who use spoken language as part, or all, of their communication system is measured. This systematic review examined the measures and methods that have been used when examining the speech intelligibility of children who are DHH and the characteristics of these measures and methods. A systematic database search was conducted of CENTRAL; CINAHL; Cochrane; ERIC; Joanna Briggs; Linguistics, Language and Behavior Abstracts; Medline; Scopus; and Web of Science databases, as well as

Neural correlates of sine-wave speech intelligibility in human frontal and temporal cortex.

Auditory speech comprehension is the result of neural computations that occur in a broad network that includes the temporal lobe auditory cortex and the left inferior frontal cortex. It remains unclear how representations in this network differentially contribute to speech comprehension. Here, we recorded high-density direct cortical activity during a sine-wave speech (SWS) listening task to examine detailed neural speech representations when the exact same acoustic input is comprehended versus not comprehended. Listeners heard SWS sentences (pre-exposure), followed by clear versions of the sa
