Common spider bites.

There are more than 30,000 species of spiders, most of which cannot inflict serious bites to humans because of their delicate mouthparts and impotent or prey-specific venoms. However, some spiders produce toxic venoms that can cause skin lesions, systemic illnesses, and neurotoxicity. One of the more common bites is inflicted by the widow spiders (Latrodectus species). A bite from a widow spider results in muscle spasms and rigidity starting at the bite site within 30 minutes to two hours. Another common bite is inflicted by the recluse spider (Loxosceles species). Most bites from these spider

Spider Bite in Iran.

Some of the world's most dangerous spiders have been certified in some areas of Iran. Spider bites are common in some geographical areas, and are sporadic in some regions. Spider bites can be classified as latrodectism or loxoscelism. If the patient had not seen the spider, the clinical manifestations of latrodectism could be easily mistaken for other types of bite or sting; or an infectious disease, and withdrawal symptoms, and also loxoscelism could be mistaken for cellulitis, various types of skin infection, or even a sting from a Gadim scorpion (Hemiscorpius lepturus). Given the nonspecifi

Brown spider envenomation.

The venom from spiders of the genus Loxosceles, the most famous being Loxosceles recluse (the most brown recluse spider) can cause serious poisoning. These spiders inhabit the south and south central states from Georgia through Texas and north to southern Wisconsin. They are commonly called violin spiders because of the violin-shaped marking on the dorsum of the cephalothorax. Many dermonecrotic lesions are incorrectly diagnosed as Brown recluse bites, as up to 50% of the diagnoses are in geographic regions of the country which do not have Loxosceles spiders. Sphingomyelinase D is the primary

[The "hornet spider" of Plinius].

Pliny the Elder describes in his 'Natural History' XXIX 86 a species of spider dangerous for human beings and looking like a hornet without wings. This description corresponds to Solipugae of the genus Karschia, living in arid areas of Central Asia. These animals are not venomous but can cause harm by their powerful bite and in some cases by a following inflammation of the wound. On the contrary, an animal called "wasp-like", mentioned by Nikander of Kolophon ('Theriaca', v. 738-746) and often regarded to be the same creature, seems to be a typical venomous spider which causes an acute intoxic

A spider hits the eye.

To determine the necessary medical care and permanent ocular damage of a particular type of preventable ocular trauma, an observational study of 22 patients referred to the University Hospital Nijmegen (1983-1993) with eye injuries caused by the accidental release of tightened elastic straps of the so-called "spider' design was performed. Although the traumatized eyes of the 22 patients could be saved from blindness by extensive medical and surgical treatment in the majority of cases, 13 patients (59%) had residual permanent visual impairment (visual acuity < or =6/10, or aphakia) at the end o

[Brown spider bite].

The diagnosis of bite by the brown recluse spider, Loxosceles reclusus, is rarely based on absolute identification of the insect because the victims are usually bitten while sleeping or dressing. More often, the history, clinical findings and course of the bite lead to the diagnosis. For early confirmation up to 24 hours after the bite, the passive hemagglutination test can be used. For older lesions, the in-vitro lymphocyte transformation test is useful, but is available in only a few medical centers. Treatment of the bite of the brown recluse spider varies from conservative to more active ap

[Spider bite in a child].

A 4-year-old girl was admitted 30 hours after being bitten by a black widow spider. The presenting symptoms were restlessness, profuse perspiration, severe abdominal pain and fever, while hypertension, hematuria and ECG changes developed later. Treatment was with intravenous fluids only, and she recovered completely and was discharged after a week. According to the literature, management includes muscle relaxants, such as methocarbamal and diazepam, and intravenous calcium gluconate is recommended by some. We found pharmacological intervention unnecessary in this case, but in severe cases and

Advances in the reconstruction of the spider tree of life: A roadmap for spider systematics and comparative studies.

In the last decade and a half, advances in genetic sequencing technologies have revolutionized systematics, transforming the field from studying morphological characters or a few genetic markers, to genomic datasets in the phylogenomic era. A plethora of molecular phylogenetic studies on many taxonomic groups have come about, converging on, or refuting prevailing morphology or legacy-marker-based hypotheses about evolutionary affinities. Spider systematics has been no exception to this transformation and the inter-relationships of several groups have now been studied using genomic data. About

[Local dermonecrotic loxoscelism in children bitten by the spider Loxosceles reclusa (the "violin" spider)].

This is an observational retrospective study. Our goal is to describe the local dermonecrotic reaction occurring after a spider bite in eleven pediatric patients. In seven (63.7%), the spider was identified as Loxosceles reclusa, and in four, bites were presumptive. The main symptoms and signs were pain, erythema, swelling, blisters, and vasculitis in five patients. There was a significant relationship between the time of onset before the treatment and the severity of the lesions (63.4 hours in the severe cases vs 14.4 hours in the mild cases, p < 0.05), as well the time spent in the emergency

An expert-curated global database of online newspaper articles on spiders and spider bites.

Mass media plays an important role in the construction and circulation of risk perception associated with animals. Widely feared groups such as spiders frequently end up in the spotlight of traditional and social media. We compiled an expert-curated global database on the online newspaper coverage of human-spider encounters over the past ten years (2010-2020). This database includes information about the location of each human-spider encounter reported in the news article and a quantitative characterisation of the content-location, presence of photographs of spiders and bites, number and type

Venomous spiders of Albania -does an increase of temperature influence the toxicity of spider venom?

UNLABELLED: Black widow spiders (Latrodectus sp.) are distributed worldwide, and in Albania the L. tredecimguttatus Rossi, 1790 has been the dominant spider. Other medically important spiders in Albania include the brown recluse with symptoms known as loxoscelism, the false black widow and the egg sac spiders; the last two inducing similar symptoms to a wasp sting. METHODS: The data analyzed is from a decade-long study of 125 patients hospitalized in the regional hospital of Fier County, in the Western Lowland of Albania from May 2009 and to October 2018. OBJECTIVE: Although the venom is rar

Leg Autotomy and Regeneration in Crab Spiders Ebrechtella tricuspidata (Araneae: Thomisidae).

Arachnids evade predation by intentionally sacrificing body parts, with leg autotomy playing a crucial role in their survival and reproductive strategies. Our study primarily employed field surveys and laboratory experiments to examine the frequency of autotomy and its effects on predation and mating in Ebrechtella tricuspidata (Araneae: Thomisidae). Leg loss was common in wild populations, with approximately 17.11% of all surveyed spiders missing at least leg, the most frequently lost leg is one of the second pair of appendages, and the highest rate of autotomy occurs in July. Additionally, w

Decoding cadmium toxicity in spiders: F-actin and Hippo pathway insights.

Heavy metals have notable effects on arthropods, but their regulatory mechanisms remain unclear. This study reveals the potential regulatory roles and mechanisms of F-actin and Hippo signaling pathway in response to cadmium (Cd) toxicity of spider. The actin gene encoding G-actin (F-actin subunit) in Pardosa pseudoannulata (P. pseudoannulata) was cloned and found to be up-regulated in Cd-exposed spiders, particularly in the 3rd and 5th instars. RNA interference (RNAi) of this gene led to increased Cd levels and suppressed physiological traits, affecting antioxidant, detoxification, immune enzy

Offensive and Defensive Exploitation of Ants by Termitophagous Spiders (Araneae: Zodariidae).

Myrmecophagy is one of the most common types of dietary specialization among predators. It can include exploitation of ants, termites, or both. Although ants and termites share a few traits, they are distantly related and possess different defensive mechanisms. Therefore, adaptations to ants and termites should differ, especially in arthropod predators of similar body size as their prey. We investigate offensive and defensive adaptations in Zodariidae spider genus Diores, reported to feed on termites. The ancestral state reconstruction of the diet favored termitophagy for the genus, but metaba

Species conservation profiles of tarantula spiders (Araneae, Theraphosidae) listed on CITES.

BACKGROUND: CITES is an international agreement between governments to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten their survival. Regarding spiders, all species listed in CITES are tarantulas. They are included in Appendix II, meaning that they are species that are not necessarily now threatened with extinction but that they may become so unless trade is closely controlled. Many tarantulas are legally and illegally traded in the pet market and they are one of the most traded invertebrate groups. Originally, the CITES list published in 1995 included
