Pediatric Spine Emergencies.

Acute onset of neurological signs and symptoms referable to the spine including difficulty walking, bowel and bladder dysfunction, and paresthesias in the extremities may be manifestations of pediatric spine emergency. Trauma is the most common etiology for a pediatric spinal emergency. Because a history of trauma is often available, the role of imaging involves detection of spinal injuries. Other pathologies such as infection, inflammation, vascular, and neoplasms may lead to pediatric spinal emergencies that also require imaging for assistance in determining the etiology and appropriate mana

Myopericytoma of the thoracic spine in a pregnant woman: a case report on the management of a rare neoplasm.

Myopericytomas are perivascular myoid neoplasms that rarely exhibit malignant characteristics. They usually arise in the dermis or subcutaneous tissue and exceptionally involve deep soft tissues, with spinal localization being rare. We report the case of a previously healthy 32-year-old pregnant woman who presented with pain in the interscapular region and progressive loss of lower limb strength. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a solid neoplastic mass at the T3 level, with spinal canal invasion and spinal cord signal abnormalities. The pregnancy was terminated, followed by lesion embolizat

A profile of metastatic carcinoma of the spine.

Metastatic bone disease in 322 patients was analyzed to assess the frequency and behavior of disseminated carcinoma to the vertebral column. Breast, lung, and prostate neoplasms were the most frequent tumors of origin in the 55% of patients who had vertebral lesions. The lumbar spine was the site of the greatest number of metastases. Back pain did not occur in 36% of the 179 patients with spinal disease. Cord compression occurred in 20% of the patients with vertebral involvement, and prostate tumors were the most frequent neoplasm to cause epidural spinal cord impingement. Hypernephroma was th

Pseudoclaudication syndrome caused by a tumour of the cauda equina.

A typical case of pseudoclaudication syndrome (neurogenic intermittent claudication), where the cause of the lumbar spinal canal narrowing was an intraspinal neoplasm, is reported. A neoplasm as the cause of this syndrome seems to be very rare, possibly because of the progressive nature of the space-occupying lesion and hence the rapid development of other predominant symptoms.

Neonatal Spinal Cord Injury.

Neonatal spinal cord injury is rare, and diagnosis is often delayed. The causes of spinal cord injury are quite broad including mechanical trauma, ischemia in the prenatal or perinatal period, iatrogenic causes, or other etiologies such as spinal abnormalities or neoplasms. The perinatal history and specific physical examination findings can suggest a diagnosis of neonatal spinal cord injury, which warrants confirmation by magnetic resonance imaging. Management involves supportive care and physical and occupational therapy. Early recognition is paramount to determine the specific cause, manage

Retrospective Analysis of Epidemiology of Intracranial and Spinal Tumor in North Western Part of India: 5-Year Observational Study of 1315 Cases.

Introduction Intracranial tumourstumors arise from the brain or its surrounding tissues. Tumors of the central nervous system (CNS) are estimated to be approximately 2% of all new cancers. In India, they constitute about 1.9% of all tumors. Extramedullary lesions, most commonly benign meningioma, account for 70 to 80% of spinal cord tumors. The objective of this study is to characterize histological subtypes, age and gender distribution, and WHO grading of intracranial and spinal tumors in a tertiary care hospital in Jaipur, Rajasthan, India. Material and method A retrospective study was condu

Spinal cord biopsy: a review of 38 cases.

OBJECTIVE: Neurosurgeons are frequently asked to evaluate patients for spinal cord biopsies when preoperative magnetic resonance imaging studies demonstrate nonspecific features. These lesions often appear unresectable, but surgeons must decide whether a biopsy is warranted. To determine the best approach to these cases, we evaluated the clinicopathological findings for patients with unknown spinal cord lesions who underwent spinal cord biopsies. METHODS: Thirty-eight consecutive patients who underwent spinal cord biopsies at the Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN) between August 1988 and July 1998 w

Epidemiology and Oncologic Patterns of Cervical Spine Metastases and Primary Tumors.

STUDY DESIGN: Narrative review. OBJECTIVE: To summarize the epidemiology and oncologic patterns of metastatic and primary cervical spine tumors and evaluate the classification systems, instability assessments, cord compression frameworks, and prognostic tools used in their management. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Although relatively uncommon, cervical spine tumors carry disproportionate clinical consequences. Epidural spinal cord compression can cause quadriplegia and respiratory failure, while the region's distinctive anatomy and biomechanics complicate oncologic decision-making. METHODS: A

A Zebra Diagnosis: A Case of Spontaneous Hematomyelia Associated With COVID-19.

Spontaneous non-traumatic spinal hematomyelia, characterized by intramedullary spinal hematoma, is a rare neurological emergency. Bleeding arteriovenous malformation, coagulopathies, and neoplasms are reported causes of this rare diagnosis. The authors present a case of a previously healthy man who presented with acute paraplegia and was found to have a spontaneous hematomyelia in association with covid infection. He underwent laminectomy and hematoma evacuation but did not recover any neurological function.

18F-FDG PET/CT Finding of Drop Metastases from Germ Cell Tumor of Pineal Gland.

Tumors of the pineal region are rare, accounting for fewer than 1% of all intracranial neoplasms. Fifty percent of pineal region tumors are germ cell tumors (GCTs). However, spinal seeding and extracranial metastases from intracranial GCTs are uncommon. We present a case of pineal gland GCT in which 18F-FDG PET/CT imaging demonstrated drop metastases to the spinal cord in addition to tracer uptake in the primary lesion.

Bilateral Mirror Image Cervical Neurofibroma in an Adult with Neurofibromatosis Type 1.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an autosomal dominant disorder characterised by various phenotypic features like hyperpigmented spots, neurofibromas, Lisch nodules, skeletal abnormalities and tendency to develop neoplasms. Only few cases of Non-Familial Spinal Neurofibromatosis-1 (Non-FSNF1) have been described in literature with tumors involving the spinal roots at every level being even rarer. We reported an interesting case of bilateral symmetrical cervical neurofibroma with multiple spinal neurofibromas appearing as mirror image on CT, associated with non familial NF-1 as a rare presenta

Intradural extramedullary spinal cord meningioma with a rare extradural foraminal extension: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Meningiomas are mostly benign and slow-growing neoplasms of the central nervous system. Spinal meningiomas account for up to 45% of all intradural spinal tumors in adults and up to 25%-45% of all spinal tumors. Spinal extradural meningiomas are rare and may be easily confused with malignant neoplasms. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 24-year-old woman was presented to our hospital with paraplegia and loss of sensation in the T7 dermatome and lower body. MRI findings showed T6-T7 right-sided intradural extramedullary and extradural lesion, measuring 1.4 cm × 1.5 cm × 3 cm, extending to the righ

Determination of the Efficiency of Magnetic Resonance Imaging in the Evaluation of Compressive Myelopathy.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Background The phrase "compressive myelopathy" refers to compression of the spinal cord, either internally or externally. This compression might arise from various sources such as a herniated disc, post-traumatic compression, and epidural abscess as well as epidural or intradural neoplasms. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) plays a crucial role in differentiating between compressive and non-compressive myelopathy. After eliminating compressive lesions, attention is directed toward intrinsic cord-related causes of acute myelopathy including vascular, infectious, and inflammatory pathologies. Aim

Linear nevi, hemihypertrophy, connective tissue hamartomas, and unusual neoplasms in children.

The association of cutaneous nevi, hemihypertrophy, and connective tissue overgrowth has been described in many patients. We report long-term follow-up in two boys with such association who in addition developed testicular neoplasms. One patient also had progressive spinal cord compression as a result of stenosis of the spinal canal, and required amputation of a severely deformed limb. The importance of careful, long-term management in such patients is emphasized.

Primary meningeal melanoma masquerading as neurofibromatosis type 2: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Primary meningeal melanocytic neoplasms are exceedingly rare tumors, representing only 0.06% to 0.1% of all primary brain tumors and ranging in spectrum from benign localized tumors to highly aggressive malignant lesions. The diagnosis of these tumors is often challenging from clinical, radiological, and pathologic standpoints. Equally challenging is the distinction between primary meningeal melanocytic neoplasm and metastatic melanoma. OBSERVATIONS: The authors reported the case of a 41-year-old man with imaging findings diagnostic of neurofibromatosis type 2: bilateral internal

Intramedullary Spinal Glioblastoma in a Cat, Presented as a Cauda equina Syndrome.

A ten year old castrated male domestic short haired cat, was presented with clinical signs related to the cauda equina. The results of the neurological examination, diagnostic procedures, and clinical course are presented. At necropsy a glioblastoma of the caudal spinal cord was present. The difficulties in distinguishing between neoplasms arising in the cauda equina and the caudal spinal cord are discussed. A comparative discussion of the cauda equina syndrome is presented.

Anterior Corpectomy and Vertebroplasty With Carbon-Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) Cage for Invasive Spinal Meningioma.

Intradural extramedullary tumors constitute a significant burden of primary spinal neoplasms. These include spinal meningiomas, the minority of which are located ventral to the cord. This report presents anterior corpectomy with Simpson Grade II resection of a ventrally located spinal meningioma at C3, followed by vertebral body replacement with a polyetheretherketone (PEEK) cage. The composition of this implant is of particular importance to this case, as it is necessary to monitor for the common event of meningioma recurrence. A 73-year-old female presented with left-sided lower extremity nu

A Technical Problem in Diagnosis Clarity of Solitary Spinal Cord Neurofibroma in an Eleven-month-old Boy.

Spinal neurofibroma is one of the rarest of the neoplasms involving the spinal cord or roots and occurs much less often than neurinoma, meningioma or glioma. The sixth pediatric case of solitary intramedullary tumor was described in 2013, according to B. Eljebbouri et al. We present a rare, difficult to diagnose and may-be the seventh pediatric case of solitary neurofibroma of the cauda equine in an 11-month-old infant. The patient underwent a laminectomy of T12, L1, L2 and L3, extirpation of intradural, intramedullary and extramedullary spinal cord tumor. The patient is fully recovered for 5

An autopsy case of meningeal carcinomatosis with parenchymal invasion through the cranial and spinal nerve roots.

Meningeal carcinomatosis is a well-known complication of malignant neoplasms. We report a case of meningeal carcinomatosis of 2 months' duration in a 22-year-old man, in whom the initial symptom was gradually worsening headache. Postmortem examination revealed infiltrating adenocarcinoma of the stomach. Carcinoma cells showed diffuse spread to the subarachnoid space of the brain and spinal cord. In many places, subarachnoid tumor cells had infiltrated to the cranial and spinal nerves. Moreover, carcinoma cells in the nerve roots extended to the parenchyma of the brain and spinal cord beyond th

Spinal lymphoma and pulmonary filariasis in a pet domestic rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus domesticus).

Spinal lymphoma and concurrent pulmonary filariasis are reported in a pet rabbit. The rabbit presented for pelvic limb paralysis resulting from extradural spinal lymphoma, presumably rising from the body of the sixth lumbar vertebra. The neoplasm was subsequently immunophenotyped as a B-cell lymphoma. Pulmonary filariasis was an incidental finding at necropsy.
