Stable transformation of Spirulina (Arthrospira) platensis: a promising microalga for production of edible vaccines.

The planktonic blue-green microalga Spirulina (Arthrospira) platensis possesses important features (e.g., high protein and vital lipids contents as well as essential vitamins) and can be consumed by humans and animals. Accordingly, this microalga gained growing attention as a new platform for producing edible-based pharmaceutical proteins. However, there are limited successful strategies for the transformation of S. platensis, in part because of an efficient expression of strong endonucleases in its cytoplasm. In the current work, as a pilot step for the expression of therapeutic proteins, an …

Inhibitory effects of dietary Spirulina platensis on UVB-induced skin inflammatory responses and carcinogenesis.

Reactive oxygen species produced in response to UVR are important in skin tumor development. We have previously reported that deficiency of the Ogg1 gene, encoding the repair enzyme for 8-oxo-7,8-dihydroguanine (8-oxoG), increases skin tumor incidence in mice upon repetitive UVB exposure and modulation of UVB-induced inflammatory response. Spirulina platensis is used as a human food supplement because it contains abundant nutritional and antioxidant components. Therefore, we investigated the inhibitory effects of S. platensis on UVB-induced skin tumor development in Ogg1 knockout-(KO) mice and…

Cultivation of Arthrospira (Spirulina) platensis in olive-oil mill wastewater treated with sodium hypochlorite.

The subject of this paper is the cultivation of the cyanobacterium Arthrospira (Sprirulina) platensis in olive-oil mill wastewater (OMWW) treated with sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl). The main positive effect of NaOCl on the OMWW characteristics is the decrease of the phenol concentration and turbidity, rendering the OMWW suitable for A. platensis growth. Maximum biomass production (1696 mg/l) was obtained when the concentration of OMWW in the cultivation medium was 10% with the supplementation of 1g/l NaNO(3) and 5 g/l NaHCO(3). However, the addition of NaHCO(3) has no significant effect, indicat

Prefeeding of Clarias gariepinus with Spirulina platensis counteracts petroleum hydrocarbons-induced hepato- and nephrotoxicity.

Petroleum aromatic hydrocarbons are considered one of the most dangerous aquatic pollutants due to their widespread across water bodies, persistence, and extension to the food chain. To our knowledge, there hasn't been any research investigating the hepatorenoprotective effects of Spirulina platensis (SP) against toxicity induced by these environmental toxicants in fish. Thus, we decided to explore its potential safeguarding against benzene and toluene exposure in adult Clarias gariepinus. To achieve this objective, fish were divided into five groups (60 per group; 20 per replicate). The first…
