[Survival and larval development of Spodoptera frugiperda (J E Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) on alternatives host].

Two bioassays were conducted to evaluate the suitability of host plants of fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda (J E Smith), in the Brazilian agro-ecosystem. Larval development and survival were analyzed by infesting leaves of maize, grain sorghum, Johnson grass, soybean, Brachiaria and tobacco with FAW newly hatched larvae in a no choice test. No significant differences of survival were observed among insects reared on different hosts, except for tobacco, where no survivors were recorded. Larvae fed on soybean and artificial diet grew larger than those fed on the other hosts. The heavie

Metagenomic insights into regional gut microbiota variation of invasive Spodoptera frugiperda across the Gaoligong Mountains.

BACKGROUND: The invasive pest Spodoptera frugiperda poses a potential threat to the ecological security of western Yunnan, using the Gaoligong Mountains as an important cross-border corridor and overwintering site. However, the potential role of gut microbiota in the local adaptation of S. frugiperda during its invasion remains poorly understood. METHODS: Adult populations were monitored using sex pheromone traps, and metagenomic sequencing was performed on larval gut microbiota from different regions of the Gaoligong Mountains. The gut microbial composition and functional potential were anal

An Autolysis-Derived Trypsin Peptide Disrupts Digestive Homeostasis and Reduces Fitness in Spodoptera Frugiperda Caterpillars.

The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda J.E. Smith (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is a significant agricultural pest, and its management is increasingly impeded by resistance to conventional insecticides, underscoring the need for alternative control strategies. This research examined the effects of the synthetic peptide GORE3 on digestive protease homeostasis and larval performance using an integrated approach that combined molecular dynamics simulations, enzymatic assays, physiological analyses, and histopathology. Comparative analyses employed benzamidine and soybean Kunitz trypsin inhibitor (S

Inheritance patterns, cross-resistance and synergism in Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) resistant to emamectin benzoate.

BACKGROUND: Fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith), is a relevant global pest due to severe damage caused on agricultural crops and its capacity to evolve resistance to insecticides. Here, we selected a strain of S. frugiperda resistant to emamectin benzoate under laboratory conditions to understand the inheritance patterns, cross-resistance and synergism involved in the resistance. RESULTS: The emamectin benzoate-resistant (Ben-R) strain was isolated by using F2 screen in a field population collected in Lucas do Rio Verde, Mato Grasso state, Brazil. After ten generations of selec

Insecticide Rotation and Adaptive Fitness Cost Underlying Insecticide Resistance Management for Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae).

Rotation of insecticide modes of action is recommended to delay selection for insecticide resistance. In this study, larvae of Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) were exposed alternately to spinetoram and metaflumizone with insecticidal and biological response determined. Five generations (G) were evaluated with at least 200 larvae assayed per treatment. The experiment consisted of rearing field-collected and untreated larvae (M-Control), larvae with successive applications of either metaflumizone (M-MET) or spinetoram (M-SPI), and alternation of these insecticides (M-Rotation treatment) consi

A recombinant West Nile virus envelope protein vaccine candidate produced in Spodoptera frugiperda expresSF+ cells.

In this study, a recombinant truncated West Nile virus envelope protein antigen (rWNV-E) was produced in serum-free cultures of the expresSF+ insect cell line via baculovirus infection. This production system was selected based on its use in the production of candidate human and animal vaccine antigens. A defined fermentation and purification process for the rWNV-E antigen was established to control for purity and immunogenicity of each protein batch. The material formulated with aluminum hydroxide was stable for greater than 8months at 4 degrees C. The recombinant vaccine candidate was evalua

Assessing the impact of Cry insecticidal proteins from Bacillus thuringiensis on the midgut of Spodoptera littoralis (Boisduval).

Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) Cry toxins exert their insecticidal activity by targeting the larval midgut epithelium, yet integration of physiological, ultrastructural, and microbiological responses under near-native conditions remains limited. In this study, we investigated the effects of Cry1Ca on Spodoptera littoralis larvae using an integrative approach combining physiological measurements with high-resolution scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM). Building on previous whole-organism imaging approaches, we analyzed intact larvae without prior dissection, an approach tha

Bulk segregant mapping and transcriptome analyses reveal the molecular mechanisms of spinetoram resistance in Spodoptera frugiperda.

The evolution of resistance to insecticides poses a significant threat to pest management programs. Understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying insecticide resistance is essential to design sustainable pest control and resistance management programs. The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda, is an important insect pest of many crops and has a remarkable ability to evolve resistance to insecticides. In this study, we employed bulk segregant analysis (BSA) combined with DNA and RNA sequencing to characterize the molecular basis of spinetoram resistance in S. frugiperda. Analysis of genomic

Bionomic responses of Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) to lethal and sublethal concentrations of selected insecticides.

Since 2016, the invasive insect Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) from the Americas has made maize production unattainable without pesticides in parts of Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia. To counteract this pest, farmers often resort to the use hazardous pesticides. This study aimed to investigate botanicals, microbials, and semi-synthetic insecticides in Ghana for pest control without harming local ecosystems. Under laboratory and on-station conditions, the present study evaluated the acute and sublethal responses of S. frugiperda to: (i) Pieris rapae Granulovirus (PrGV)

The Spodoptera frugiperda Host Strains: What They Are and Why They Matter for Understanding and Controlling This Global Agricultural Pest.

Fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda [J.E. Smith]) is a moth native to the Western Hemisphere where it is a major pest of corn (maize) and multiple other crops. It is now a global threat with its recent discovery and dissemination in the Eastern Hemisphere. Its broad host range is in part due to two subpopulations denoted as 'host strains' that differ in host plant specificity. Therefore, identifying the strains present in a location is critical to assessing what crops are at risk of infestation. However, much remains uncertain about how the strains differ and even on the fundamental issue of

Insecticide resistance in Australian Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) and development of testing procedures for resistance surveillance.

Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) is a highly invasive noctuid pest first reported in northern Australia during early 2020. To document current status of resistance in S. frugiperda in Australia, insecticide toxicity was tested in field populations collected during the first year of establishment, between March 2020 and March 2021. Dose-response was measured by larval bioassay in 11 populations of S. frugiperda and a susceptible laboratory strain of Helicoverpa armigera. Emamectin benzoate was the most efficacious insecticide (LC50 0.023μg/ml) followed by chlorantraniliprole (LC50 0.055μg/ml)

Flight Capability and the Low Temperature Threshold of a Chinese Field Population of the Fall Armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda.

The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith), is capable of long-distance migration; thus, evaluation of its flight capability is relevant to the design of monitoring and control strategies for this pest. Previous studies have quantified the flight ability of lab-reared populations under controlled conditions, but less is known about the flight capability of natural populations. In addition, the low temperature threshold for flight in natural populations also needs to be determined. In this study, the flight capability of S. frugiperda adults emerging from field-collected larvae in S

Characterization of Toxicological and Neurophysiological Effects of Natural Product Based Chromenes to Fall Armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda.

We previously extracted and purified a chromene amide from Amyris texana and found this scaffold is moderately insecticidal and thus, this study aimed to test the insecticidal properties of 13 synthetically derived chromene analogs to the fall armyworm (FAW, Spodoptera frugiperda). Microinjection of chromenes with alcohol or aldehydes substitutions at the meta position on the benzopyran moiety led to moderate toxicity that was approximately 2- to 3-fold less toxic when compared to permethrin, yet microinjection of differently substituted chromenes exhibited little to no toxicity. Similarly, ch

Mildew-Induced Resistance in Roses Against Spodoptera exigua and Chemical Compounds Produced During the Defense Response.

In the ternary system of Podosphaera pannosa, Spodoptera exigua, and Rosa chinensis, volatiles from infected roses suppress S. exigua oviposition, but the non-volatile-mediated resistance mechanism remains unclear. This study investigated mildew-induced resistance in roses by assessing larval feeding responses to leaf extracts. Infected rose leaf extracts significantly inhibited larval feeding (68.55% inhibition; t = 4.742, df = 28, p = 0.0002). Untargeted LC-MS metabolomics identified 1046 metabolites in R. chinensis. P. pannosa infection altered the rose metabolome, yielding 64 differentiall

Characterizing the symbiotic relationship between Wolbachia (wSpic) and Spodoptera picta (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae): From genome to phenotype.

Wolbachia is a genus of symbiotic bacteria prevalent in arthropods, with diverse effects on host reproduction and fecundity; however, it is unclear how Wolbachia modulates the host reproductive system. In this study, a novel Wolbachia strain, wSpic, was identified in the Noctuid moth Spodoptera picta and its effect on the reproduction of this host was investigated. We sequenced and annotated the 1,339,720 bp genome of wSpic. We identified a total of five WO phage regions in the genome and found no evidence of any plasmids associated with wSpic. Evolutionary analysis revealed that wSpic belongs

Sublethal effects of flufenoxuron on Spodoptera mauritia Bosid. (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) testicular biochemical profiling and Spermatogenic alterations.

Flufenoxuron, a widely used chitin synthesis inhibitor, is effective against several insect and mite pests. This study evaluated the reproductive toxicity in male sixth-instar larvae of Spodoptera mauritia, a sporadic lepidopteran pest of rice crops. Larvae were topically treated with sublethal concentrations of flufenoxuron (ED25-0.00068 μg and ED50-0.00015 μg), and biochemical responses were assessed at 48, 96, and 144 h post-treatment. Significant reductions in lipid, protein, and carbohydrate levels were observed in the haemolymph and testes of treated larvae, indicating a potential impair

Defense of cabbages against herbivore cutworm Spodoptera litura under Cd stress and insect herbivory stress simultaneously.

Biotic (e.g., heavy metal) and abiotic stress (e.g., insect attack) can affect plant chemical defense, but little is known about the changes in plant defense when they occur concurrently. Herein, the impacts of heavy metal cadmium (Cd) stress and insect herbivory stress on the direct and indirect defense of two cultivar cabbages of Brassica campestris, the low-Cd cultivar Lvbao701 and the high-Cd cultivar Chicaixin No.4, against the herbivore cutworm Spodoptera litura were investigated. Understanding the impact of fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda J. E. Smith) leaf damage on maize yields.

Fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda J. E. Smith), a serious pest of maize and other cereals, recently invaded the Old World potentially threatening the food security and incomes of millions of smallholder farmers. Being able to assess the impacts of a pest on yields is fundamental to developing Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approaches. Hence, working with an early maturing, medium maturing and late maturing variety, we inoculated maize plants with 2nd instar S. frugiperda larvae at V5, V8, V12, VT and R1 growth stages to investigate the effects of FAW induced damage on yield.
