BACKGROUND: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic rheumatic disease that predominantly affects the axial skeleton, causing pain and functional impairment. Kinesiophobia, or fear of movement, is common in patients with chronic pain conditions and can significantly hinder treatment outcomes. This study aims to assess the level of kinesiophobia in AS patients and explore its relationship with demographic characteristics, disease duration, pain intensity, disease activity, and functional impairment.
METHODS: This single-center study included 35 AS patients from July 2021 to July 2023. Patient

Ankylosing spondylitis is a chronic inflammatory disease that mainly affects axial joints and the changes in the vertebrae cause typical kyphotic posture. In patients with ankylosing spondylitis, the postural changes, including cervical flexion, decreased lumbar lordosis, posterior rotation of pelvis, hip extension, knee flexion, and plantar flexion of ankle along with kyphosis, may occur in the upcoming terms of the disease and may negatively affect balance. Joint and eye involvements; muscular, vestibular and proprioceptional changes can also affect balance. This review evaluates the ankylos

BACKGROUND: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory disease of unknown cause and affects mainly the spine, but can also affect other joints. Disease progression may result in loss of mobility and function. Sulfasalazine is a disease-modifying antirheumatic drug used in the treatment of AS. However, its efficacy remains unclear. This is an update of a Cochrane review first published in 2005.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the benefits and harms of sulfasalazine for the treatment of ankylosing spondylitis (AS).
SEARCH METHODS: We searched for relevant randomized and quasi-randomized tri

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a prototypical inflammatory disease of the locomotor system affecting axial skeleton. It is part of the general group of spondyloarthopathies (SpA). Its strong association with histocompatibility antigen HLA-B27 is known since 1973. However, HLA-B27 contribution to AS genetic risk is approximately 16%. Therefore, other genes are necessarily involved in the pathogenesis of the disease. Genomic development and the possibility of making genome wide screening have contributed enormously to the study of the disease. In this paper, we describe the actual knowledge abou

Septic arthritis and spondylitis in elderly adult are uncommon disease. But symptoms and signs of septic arthritis and spondylitis are an important medical emergency, with high mortality and morbidity. Delayed or inadequate treatment can result in irreversible joint destruction and neurological condition. Early diagnoses as well as prompt and effective treatment are essential for avoiding severe outcomes. In spite of advances in diagnostic imaging techniques, the incidence of septic arthritis and spondylitis appears to have been increased. The aging of the population, the widespread use of imm

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory arthritis that affects the spine and sacroiliac joints. It causes significant disability and is associated with a number of other features including peripheral arthritis, anterior uveitis, psoriasis and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Significant progress has been made in the genetics of AS have in the last five years, leading to new treatments in trial, and major leaps in understanding of the aetiopathogenesis of the disease.

BACKGROUND: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory disease of unknown cause, characterized by sacroiliitis and spondylitis. Methotrexate (MTX), a widely used disease-modifying antirheumatic drug (DMARD), is effective for rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and so might work for AS. This is an update of a Cochrane review first published in 2004, and previously updated in 2006.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the benefits and harms of MTX for treating AS.
SEARCH METHODS: We searched CENTRAL (The Cochrane Library Issue 6, 2012), MEDLINE (2005 to June 25, 2012), EMBASE (2005 to June 25, 2012), Ovi

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the joints, included in the group of seronegative spondyloarthropathies. Its main characteristic is the fusion of the bones in the spine, which causes loss of flexibility of the back and neck. Other large articulations and connective tissues can be affected by the inflammatory process. It affects mainly men between the ages of 20 and 40; it is rare after the age of 50. Women represent a minority of patients. There is little information about AS in the anesthetic literature. The objective of this article

BACKGROUND: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is an inflammatory rheumatic disease with axial involvement but its physiopathology remains unexplained. This latter combines genetic and environmental factors as well as an abnormal immune response.
CURRENT TOPICS AND IMPORTANT RESULT: This review addresses the different aspects of AS immunogenetic. A genetic background in AS is suggested by familial cases, concordance rate in twins and transmission of the disease in siblings. Ankylosing spondylitis is strongly associated with the expression of the HLA Class I antigen, B27, but also with other genes no

BACKGROUND: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory disease of unknown cause, characterised by sacroiliitis and spondylitis. Generally, treatment is limited to the alleviation of symptoms using non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Recently, disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) have been used for patients for whom NSAIDs do not work. Methotrexate (MTX), a widely used DMARD, is effective for rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and so might work for AS too.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the efficacy and toxicity of MTX for treating AS.

Ankylosing spondylitis is a chronic inflammatory joint disease in which inflammation of the entheses gradually causes local ossification and ankylosis. Diffuse osteoporosis responsible for bone fragility is another feature established by recent data. The bone loss predominates at the spine and can cause vertebral fractures that are rare but nonnegligible sources of mortality and morbidity late in the course of the disease.

Depending on its severity the fixed flexion deformity of the spine in patients with ankylosing spondylitis leads to significant disturbance in the activity of daily living. The surgical correction of such a deformity requires a special knowledge in the context of spinal surgery. Meticulous surgical procedures were especially developed for this kind of spinal deformity. Considering the rate of complications it is necessary to select carefully the patients undergoing these procedures. The surgeon must be familiar in handling these patients and these special surgical procedures.

A 41-year-old-white man with achondroplasia has been followed intermittently since age 27. During this time, he has complained of neck and back pain with limited mobility in both. Other problems have included temporomandibular joint pain, dysuria without apparent urinary tract infection iritis, anemia, and an elevated gamma globulin fraction. Recently he returned to the clinic complaining of rigidity of the entire spine. Radiographs showed complete fusion of the sacroiliac joints and fusion of the cervical vertebral bodies and apophyseal joints, consistent with ankylosing spondylitis. He was f

We treated 107 adults with spinal tuberculosis. The average age was 41.8 years (range, sixteen to seventy-five years). Diagnosis was difficult: bone scans were negative in 35 per cent; gallium scans, negative in 70 per cent; and results of tuberculin skin tests, negative in 14 per cent. Five neurologically impaired patients had no discernible bone lesions when they were first seen but were found to have either intradural or extradural tuberculomas or tuberculous arachnoiditis. Our indications for a spinal operation were neurological impairment, spinal instability, or failure of medical managem

The enthesopathic lesion of ankylosing spondylitis consists of a nonspecific, nongranulomatous inflammatory lesion which leads to destruction of the attachment of ligament to bone. Resulting erosion leads to reactive bone formation which may form a new enthesis and around the outer fibres of the annulus may lead to syndesmophyte formation. What determines the distribution of the enthesopathy and ankylosis is not known.

An attempt was made to determine whether a relationship exists between ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and hyperparathyroidism (HP). Twenty patients with definite AS, studied for biochemical evidence of HP, did not show consistent abnormalities in serum calcium, phosphorus, alkalinephosphatase, or parathyroid hormone levels or in bone-density measurements. Reviewing roentgenograms of 39 patients with HP showed one patient with sacroiliitis, and one of the 28 hyperparathyroid patients tissue-typed as HLA B27-positive. Both AS and HP are independent entities that have no causative or pathological re
