Antimicrobial potential of spray drying encapsulated thyme (Thymus vulgaris) essential oil on the conservation of hamburger-like meat products.

Synthetic preservatives can have harmful effects on the body, so plant essential oils appear to be an attractive natural alternative. However, the use of essential oils is limited due to the low stability and possible negative effects on the sensory properties of food. Oil encapsulation was suggested as a way to overcome these drawbacks. The objective of this study was to encapsulate thyme essential oil and to evaluate its antioxidant and antimicrobial potential in vitro and in situ in of hamburger-like meat products. The casein-maltodextrin capsules produced by spray-drying were assessed for

Porous and highly dispersible voriconazole dry powders produced by spray freeze drying for pulmonary delivery with efficient lung deposition.

Systemic administration of antifungal agents for the treatment of pulmonary aspergillosis is limited by the poor lung deposition and severe adverse effects. In contrast, pulmonary delivery allows a higher amount of drug to be delivered directly to the infection site and therefore a lower dose is required. This study aimed to develop porous and inhalable voriconazole dry powder with good lung deposition by spray freeze drying (SFD), using tert-butyl alcohol (TBA) as a co-solvent. A three-factor two-level full factorial design approach was used to investigate the effect of total solute concentra

Spray-Drying Process Optimization and Modeling for an Inhaled Dry Powder of 5-Azacytidine for Treating Local and Metastatic Lung Cancer.

A spray-dried powder formulation of 5-azacytidine (5-AZA) recently showed significantly improved tumor reduction and systemic exposure for the potential treatment of metastatic lung cancer. To support clinical use, the target product profile required double the active loading. Here, a series of powders were spray dried to increase 5-AZA loading in the formulation, and process parameters were varied to identify variables controlling powder properties. Formulations were sprayed via in-line mixing, where separate dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and aqueous solutions were mixed immediately upstream of a

Co-spray drying of cannabidiol and vancomycin combination powder formulations for the treatment of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus respiratory infections.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) can cause life-threatening respiratory infections. Conventional oral and parenteral antibiotic treatments are often inefficient in targeting the lower respiratory tract and could cause systemic adverse effects. In this study, the 24-hour time-kill assay revealed that the co-delivery of cannabidiol (CBD) and vancomycin synergistically eradicated three clinical strains of MRSA. The combinations had rapid and sustained bactericidal activity over 24 h at the ½ x minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). Four synergistic mass ratios of CBD and vancom

Utilizing Hot-Melt Extrusion and Spray Drying Techniques for Preparation of Liquid and Solid Cannabidiol Nano-Structured Lipid Carriers Formulations.

Nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs) have attracted considerable interest as drug delivery systems capable of enhancing the solubility and oral bioavailability of poorly water-soluble drugs. In our previous work, cannabidiol (CBD)-loaded NLCs prepared by hot homogenization demonstrated improved dissolution and oral bioavailability. In the present study, hot-melt extrusion (HME) was investigated as a rapid and easily scalable alternative method for the preparation of CBD NLCs. Additionally, spray drying was used to convert the prepared CBD NLCs into a solid dosage form. CBD NLCs were prepared u

Freeze vs. Spray Drying for Dry Wild Thyme (Thymus serpyllum L.) Extract Formulations: The Impact of Gelatin as a Coating Material.

Freeze drying was compared with spray drying regarding feasibility to process wild thyme drugs in order to obtain dry formulations at laboratory scale starting from liquid extracts produced by different extraction methods: maceration and heat-, ultrasound-, and microwave-assisted extractions. Higher total powder yield (based on the dry weight prior to extraction) was achieved by freeze than spray drying and lower loss of total polyphenol content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC) due to the drying process. Gelatin as a coating agent (5% w/w) provided better TPC recovery by 70% in case of

Enhancing the Phenolic Value of Polyphenol-Rich Extra Virgin Olive Oils Through Optimized Water Extraction, Macroporous Resin Recovery and Spray Drying.

Olive oil polyphenols are well-established for their health-promoting properties. A recently emerged polyphenol-rich extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) was subjected to a water extraction process, optimized using response surface methodology (RSM). The effects of salt content and the water-to-oil ratio on the total phenolics were initially evaluated. Maximal phenolic yield was obtained by a water/EVOO ratio of 9.6:1 (v:v) and 0% added salt, although the addition of 3% salt provided an oil-free extract with a satisfactory phenolic yield compared to the optimized extract. Further, the phenolics of th

A Simple, Organic Solvent-Free, and Scalable Process for Producing Calcium Alginate Nanoparticle Powder by High-Pressure Homogenization and Spray Drying.

Scaling up nanoparticle production remains one of the main bottlenecks for translating laboratory formulations into industrially relevant processes. This study established an organic solvent-free and reproducible process to produce calcium alginate nanoparticles by integrating ionic gelation, high-pressure homogenization, and spray drying. Scale-up of the synthesis step was demonstrated by increasing the ionic gelation batch volume from 400 mL to 2 L, while high-pressure homogenization at 1000 bar was subsequently applied as a refining step, reducing particle size from the micrometer range to

Comparative study of Hot-Melt Extrusion, spray drying, and KinetiSol® processing to formulate a poorly water-soluble and thermolabile drug.

Fenbendazole (FBZ), a benzimidazole-carbamate anthelmintic, shows promising chemotherapeutic properties. However, it is a poorly water-soluble molecule, leading to low and variable oral bioavailability. This study investigated hot-melt extrusion (HME), spray drying, and KinetiSol processing (KSD) using Soluplus (SOL) to enhance FBZ's solubility. Formulating FBZ as an amorphous solid dispersion (ASD) by HME at a barrel temperature of 120 °C led to extensive chemical degradation of FBZ, generating the degradation product fenbendazoleamine. On the other hand, spray-drying (SD) generated an ASD, b
