Talent management for the twenty-first century.

Most firms have no formal programs for anticipating and fulfilling talent needs, relying on an increasingly expensive pool of outside candidates that has been shrinking since it was created from the white-collar layoffs of the 1980s. But the advice these companies are getting to solve the problem--institute large-scale internal development programs--is equally ineffective. Internal development was the norm back in the 1950s, and every management-development practice that seems novel today was routine in those years--from executive coaching to 360-degree feedback to job rotation to high-potenti

Ethical issues in health workforce development.

Increasing the numbers of health workers and improving their skills requires that countries confront a number of ethical dilemmas. The ethical considerations in answering five important questions on enabling health workers to deal appropriately with the circumstances in which they must work are described. These include the problems of the standards of training and practice required in countries with differing levels of socioeconomic development and different priority diseases; how a society can be assured that health practitioners are properly trained; how a health system can support its worke

The Acceptability and Feasibility of Implementing an Online Educational Intervention With Nurses in a Provincial Prison Context.

BACKGROUND: Correctional nursing requires a strong knowledge base with access to continuing education (CE) to maintain and enhance competencies. Nurses working in provincial prisons have reported many challenges in accessing CE, with online learning being identified as a potential solution. Limited research was found, however, which examined the correctional context in the development and delivery of online learning for nurses. The purpose of this study was to develop an online educational intervention tailored to correctional nurses and determine the feasibility and acceptability of implement

From the Individual to the Ecosystem: An Institutional Framework for the Career Sustainability of Early-Career Health Professions Faculty.

The career sustainability of early-career faculty in the health professions is often framed as a matter of individual resilience, a perspective that obscures institutional determinants of ill-being and attrition. We argue that retention and thriving depend on an institutional ecosystem that integrates structured mentoring, psychopedagogical support and formal recognition of faculty work. Drawing on recent evidence on burnout, resilience and career development in academic medicine, we propose the Health Professions Faculty Career Sustainability Institutional Ecosystem (EISCD-Health) and the Fac

Coaching Influence, Communication, and Accountability: Developing Leadership Behaviors in Every Nurse.

Coaching is a powerful strategy for developing leadership behaviors in nurses. Distinct from mentoring and precepting, coaching uses purposeful communication and reflective questioning to foster critical thinking, accountability, and influence. Nurse educators can integrate coaching into everyday interactions to strengthen clinical judgment, psychological safety, professional growth, and patient care. Leadership is an essential competency for every nurse. Nurse educators are uniquely positioned to cultivate leadership behaviors by coaching nurses to influence others, communicate effectively, a

Building leadership capacity through coaching: A pilot professional development initiative for nurse faculty.

Leadership development remains a critical need for emerging nurse leaders as academic and health care environments become increasingly complex and resource constrained. Nursing faculty are frequently expected to assume leadership roles with limited formal preparation or structured support. In response, a pilot coaching-based professional development program was designed and implemented with early-career nurse faculty in a single academic setting. The Advancing Collegiate Coaching for Excellence in Leadership (ACCEL) program combined individualized coaching with structured cohort-based learning

Effects of a staff-led multicomponent physical activity intervention on preschooler's fundamental motor skills and physical fitness: The ACTNOW cluster-randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Fundamental motor skills (FMS) and physical fitness (FIT) play important roles in child development and provide a foundation for lifelong participation in physical activity (PA). Unfortunately, many children have suboptimal levels of PA, FMS, and FIT. The Active Learning Norwegian Preschool(er)s (ACTNOW) study investigated the effects of a staff-led PA intervention on FMS, FIT, and PA in 3-5-year-old children. METHODS: Preschools in Western Norway having ≥ six 3-4-year-old children were invited (n = 56). Of these, 46 agreed to participate and were cluster-randomized into an interv

The Experiences of the Nursing Professional Development Practitioner on the Night Shift-A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: The nursing shortage continues to grow and is expected to intensify in the near future. Health care organizations need to implement strategic ways to support nurses. First-year new graduate nurses have a high turnover rate. It is critical to have educational support on the night shift, where most new nurses begin their careers. OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to gain insight into how nursing professional development (NPD) practitioners or nursing educators who work the night shift perceive their roles and explore their experiences. Limited literature exists on having NPD on the night s

Is yours a learning organization?

An organization with a strong learning culture faces the unpredictable deftly. However, a concrete method for understanding precisely how an institution learns and for identifying specific steps to help it learn better has remained elusive. A new survey instrument from professors Garvin and Edmondson of Harvard Business School and assistant professor Gino of Carnegie Mellon University allows you to ground your efforts in becoming a learning organization. The tool's conceptual foundation is what the authors call the three building blocks of a learning organization. The first, a supportive learn

Make your company a talent factory.

Despite the great sums of money companies dedicate to talent management systems, many still struggle to fill key positions - limiting their potential for growth in the process. Virtually all the human resource executives in the authors' 2005 survey of 40 companies around the world said that their pipeline of high-potential employees was insufficient to fill strategic management roles. The survey revealed two primary reasons for this. First, the formal procedures for identifying and developing next-generation leaders have fallen out of sync with what companies need to grow or expand into new ma

Getting by with a little help from avatar friends: Use of AI-powered avatars to implement feedback training for faculty.

Delivering feedback is a critical skill that remains widely underdeveloped among medical educators. Faculty development in this area has traditionally relied on lectures and in-person workshops, limiting access, scalability, and opportunities for experiential learning. Implementing practical technology-driven solutions that support experiential learning can expand access to simulation-based learning, fostering broader adoption and continued development of this key skill. We piloted a one and a half hour in-person faculty development workshop to gauge perceived benefit and interest in utilizing
