A 30 year old bodybuilder who had been taking anabolic steroids for 18 months presented with bleeding oesophageal varices. Serious liver disease secondary to anabolic steroids including peliosis hepatis, nodular hyperplasia and malignant change is well recognized. We report what is, to our knowledge, the first case of bleeding oesophageal varices associated with the use of anabolic steroids.

HISTORY AND ADMISSION FINDINGS: A 28-year-old body builder was admitted because of jaundice. For 80 days, until 3 weeks before hospitalization, he had been taking moderately high doses of anabolic steroids: metandienone (methandienone), 10-50 mg daily by mouth, and stanozolol, 50 mg intramuscularly every other day. Bilateral renal infarction is an extremely rare condition with only few cases reported in the literature. A clot lysis model in the rat was described which was responsive to manipulation of the fibrinolytic system. By employing [125I]-labeled fibrinogen in homologous, plasminogen-deficient plasma, clots were prepared in Teflon-perforated cylinders and were implanted subcutaneously. Primary complement deficiencies are rare and two related patients are reported here. The first patient is a 41-year-old man with eighteen episodes of pneumococcal meningitis and other purulent infections.
