Pathogenic properties of orthologues to S. aureus staphylococcal enterotoxin C (SEC) and staphylococcal enterotoxin L (SEL) produced by S. epidermidis are largely unexplored. We assessed the enteropathogenic effects of S. epidermidis SECepi and SELepi and S. aureus SEC3 and SEL after oral administration to Balb/c mice. Intestinal sections from SE-treated mice were analyzed histopathologically. The T cell lineage markers (αβ and γδ TCR CD3, CD4, CD8), T-cell activation marker CD69 and proliferation-related marker CD71 were assessed in intraepithelial lymphocytes (IEL), mesenteric lymph nodes (M

OBJECTIVES: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is an increasing public and occupational health concern. As transmission of MRSA can occur via contact with fomites, it is crucial to have sensitive methods for sampling of bacteria. The overall aim of this study was to obtain knowledge about methods and strategies for quantitative sampling Staphylococcus species on surfaces.
METHODS: The study was designed as a comparative sampling experiment with different samplers [dipslide (two agar types), swabs (three brands, used wet and dry, and elution from swabs or plate diluted)] on smo

Ozenoxacin (OZN) belongs to a new generation of non-fluorinated quinolones for the topical treatment of skin infections which has shown to be effective in the treatment of susceptible and resistant Gram-positive cocci. The mutant prevention concentration (MPC) of ozenoxacin, levofloxacin and ciprofloxacin was determined in quinolone-susceptible and -resistant strains including methicillin-susceptible S. aureus, methicillin-resistant S. aureus, methicillin-susceptible S. epidermidis and methicillin-resistant S. epidermidis with different profile of mutation in the quinolone resistance determini

A total of 374 Staphylococcus aureus and 126 Staphylococcus epidermidis strains from 14 countries were studied for their resistance to methicillin, trimethoprim (Tp) and sulfonamides (Su), alone and combined (TpSu). The frequency of resistance to Tp, Su and TpSu was much higher in methicillin-resistant S. epidermidis (MRSE) than in methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA). Considerable differences, however, existed in isolates from different countries. Resistance to Tp, Su or TpSu in MRSA was low or absent in isolates from Switzerland, Spain, Japan, Mexico, Argentina and Chile, but high in isola

Earlier investigations demonstrated that production and secretion of toxic shock syndrome toxin-1 (TSST-1) and total exoprotein by strains of Staphylococcus aureus were maximal when magnesium ion was limiting and diminished when the concentration of magnesium increased. This investigation studied the influence of magnesium concentration on production of total exoprotein and beta-lactamase by strains of S. aureus and Staphylococcus hemolyticus, isolated from the genital tracts of women. These strains were resistant to penicillins. Each organism was incubated in chemically defined medium with va

INTRODUCTION: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a major clinical challenge due to its virulence and multidrug resistance. Antivirulence strategies targeting key pathogenic mechanisms without affecting bacterial viability provide a promising alternative to conventional antibiotics.
METHODS: The inhibitory effect of isoliquiritigenin (ISL) on S. aureus sortase A (SrtA) was assessed using a fluorescence resonance energy transfer assay. Fluorescence quenching and molecular docking analyses were performed to elucidate the binding interaction between ISL and SrtA. Adhesion and b

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) constitutes an important cause for concern in the field of public health, and the role of the food chain in the transmission of this pathogen and in antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has not yet been defined. The objectives of this work were to isolate and characterize coagulase-positive Staphylococcus (CoPS) and coagulase-negative Staphylococcus (CoNS), particularly S. aureus, from school dining rooms located in Argentina. From 95 samples that were obtained from handlers, inert surfaces, food, and air in 10 establishments, 30 Staphylococcus stra

Staphylococcus agnetis is an emerging pathogen in chickens but has been most commonly isolated from sub-clinical mastitis in bovines. Previous whole-genome analyses for known virulence genes failed to identify determinants for the switch from mild ductal infections in cattle to severe infections in poultry. We now report identification of a family of 15 kbp, 17-19 gene mobile genetic elements (MGEs) specific to chicken osteomyelitis and dermatitis isolates of S. agnetis. These MGEs can be present in multiple copies per genome. The MGE has been vectored on a Staphylococcus phage that separately

The aim of study was the molecular characteristic of S. aureus and S. epidermidis isolates obtained from skin surface, wounds, deep tissues of hospitalized patients and from skin surface of non-hospitalized patients. Genes encoding virulence factors were examined using PCR reaction and specific primers. Genes encoding adhesinsfnbA and cna and gene eta for epidermolytic toxin were mostly present in S. aureus isolates coming from wounds and deep tissues compared to these from skin surface. Gene atlE encoding autolysin of S. epidermidis was detected in all studied isolates, whereas gene icaAB was

We report a clinical case of a patient hospitalized for community-acquired Staphylococcus aureus pneumonia. A 26-year-old patient with no medical history went to the emergency department for fever. He quickly developed acute respiratory failure and community-acquired Staphylococcus aureus pneumonia as well as bacteremia were confirmed. This pulmonary infection is rare but can affect all age groups and occur in a variety of ways. Patients with community-acquired Staphylococcus aureus pneumonia have more severe clinical outcomes than those with community-acquired pneumonia caused by other germs.

This case report describes an unusual invasive infection with Staphylococcus capitis, in a child with a history of repaired congenital heart disease and an acute presentation of osteomyelitis. Coagulase-negative staphylococci are rare causes of osteomyelitis without an implanted device in the bone and, as such, should prompt evaluation for associated infections that may be contributing to the unusual presentation. Additionally, this case highlights the importance of considering methicillin heteroresistance in staphylococcal infections when the clinical course is not proceeding as expected.

Musculoskeletal infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus are among the most difficult-to-treat infections. S. aureus osteomyelitis is associated with a tremendous disease burden through potential for long-term relapses and functional deficits. Although considerable advances have been achieved in diagnosis and treatment of osteomyelitis, the management remains challenging and impact on quality of life is still enormous. S. aureus acute arthritis is relatively seldom in general population, but the incidence is considerably higher in patients with predisposing conditions, particularly those wit

Staphylococcus aureus, although generally identified as a commensal, is also a common cause of human bacterial infections, including of the skin and other soft tissues, bones, bloodstream, and respiratory tract. The history of S. aureus treatment is marked by the development of resistance to each new class of antistaphylococcal antimicrobial drugs, including the penicillins, sulfonamides, tetracyclines, glycopeptides, and others, complicating therapy. S. aureus isolates identified in the 1960s were sometimes resistant to methicillin, a ß-lactam antimicrobial active initially against a majority

Staphylococcus aureus is a facultative anaerobic Gram-positive coccus and a member of the normal skin flora, as well as that of the nasal passages of humans. However, S. aureus can also gain entry into the host and cause life-threatening infections or persist as disease foci that develop into suppurative abscesses. While genetically tractable, the manipulation of S. aureus remains challenging. This unit describes methods developed in our laboratory for gene disruption by allelic replacement and transposition. We also provide a protocol for bacteriophage-mediated transduction of mutants marked

IMPORTANCE: Although classically thought to be primarily a nosocomial infection, the incidence of community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is rising. In this series we report 3 cases of community-acquired MRSA acute dacryoadenitis in adults presenting within a 3-week period.
OBSERVATIONS: All cases presented with pain and periocular erythema increasing over approximately 1 week. An S-shaped lid deformity was evident, and 2 of the 3 cases demonstrated multiple pustules/abscesses in the region of the lacrimal gland that were expressing purulent fluid into the superi

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus aureus causes serious infections in both hospital and community settings. Attempts have been made to prevent human infection through vaccination against bacterial cell-surface antigens; thus far all have failed. Here we show that superantigens and cytolysins, when used in vaccine cocktails, provide protection from S. aureus USA100-USA400 intrapulmonary challenge.
METHODS: Rabbits were actively vaccinated (wild-type toxins or toxoids) or passively immunized (hyperimmune serum) against combinations of superantigens (toxic shock syndrome toxin 1, enterotoxins B and C,

Staphylococcus aureus is a dreadful pathogen for mankind, causing boils, abscesses, wound infections, osteomyelitis, septicaemia, endocarditis, pneumonia, toxic shock syndrome, scalded skin syndrome, and food poisoning. The development of penicillin-, methicillin-, and vancomycin-resistant strains shows that S. aureus has an enormous adaptive power. Most methicillin-resistant strains of S. aureus (MRSA) are hospital-acquired, although an increasing number are reported to be community-acquired. A limited number of clones of MRSA have spread all over the world. Since most community-acquired MRSA
