The clinical efficacy of a surgical scrub containing 2% chlorhexidine acetate (2CA; Nolvasan® Surgical Scrub; Fort Dodge Animal Health, USA) was evaluated for the topical management of canine superficial pyoderma. In order to compound a new drug combination against canine otitis externa (OE), 515 dogs affected with OE were subjected to physical examination and microbiological analysis of their ear exudates. Disk diffusion susceptibility tests were done on 1,178 clinical strains of coagulase-positive staphylococci (CPS) isolated from dogs during a 7-year period. Relative decreases of 7% to 33% were found in the percentages of CPS sensitive to 8 antimicrobics. We screened 615 gram-positive isolates from 150 healthy children for the presence of the erm(A), erm(B), erm(C), erm(F), and mef(A) genes. A topical mucoadhesive dosage form was developed for the treatment of infectious oral cavity diseases, consisting of a paste based on a combination of a complex immunoglobulin preparation (CIP) and interferon alpha-2b. CIP within the final formulation demonstrated robust antimicrobial activity against key oral pathogens (Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus intermedius, and Fusobacterium nucleatum). An optimal composition was selected that exhibited optimal mucoadhesion and a mucosal retention time of at least 90 min. The final formulation produced no local irritant effects.

Skin reaction patterns to intradermal injections of a Staphylococcus intermedius antigen were examined in physically healthy dogs and in dogs with German Shepherd dog Pyoderma (GSP) at 15 and 30 minutes and at 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 24, 48 and 72 hours after the injection. In both groups the skin histopathology revealed an aspecific inflammatory response of an early polymorphonuclear reaction, followed by a mononuclear cell reaction at 24 and 48 hours. It is concluded that hypersensitivity to staphylococcal antigens does not play a role in the pathogenesis of GSP.

This retrospective study evaluates the effectiveness of nonsurgical treatment using antibiotics to treat hematogenous septic arthritis in five dogs. Giant-breed dogs were over-represented, with all dogs <1 year of age. Laboratory surveillance and the monitoring of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) trends and patterns among local isolates have been highly effective in providing comprehensive information for public health decision-making.
