Staphylococcus lugdunensis, a coagulase-negative staphylococcus, has emerged as an opportunistic pathogen causing severe infections. It exhibits genetic diversity, with multiple sequence types, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes, and virulence factors. This study aimed to explore its genomic features and clinical implications. Six clinical isolates from Fujian, Beijing, and Wuhan were sequenced using Illumina and Oxford Nanopore platforms, and antimicrobial susceptibility was tested. Other 139 genomes were retrieved from GenBank. Multi-locus sequence typing, phylogenetic and recombination an

Orbital apex syndrome (OAS) is a rare complication of odontogenic maxillary sinusitis. An 87-year-old woman with gingivitis caused by a dental implant infection developed diplopia, followed by a rapid visual deterioration and limited extraocular movement in her left eye. Imaging revealed penetration of the upper left first molar into the maxillary sinus and inflammation involving the extraocular muscles and the orbital apex. Staphylococcus lugdunensis (S. lugdunensis) was cultured from the patient's sinus. Steroid pulse therapy, antimicrobial treatment, tooth extraction, and sinus irrigation p

Staphylococcus lugdunensis is an unusually virulent coagulase-negative Staphylococcus (CoNS). The aim of the present study was to investigate the clinical and microbiological characteristics of 20 cases of skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) due to S. lugdunensis that occurred in our area. The frequency of SSTIs due to this organism was 0.42%. The infection was secondary to trauma, surgery or skin disease in 15 patients (75%). Abscesses (7 cases), surgical wound infections (6 cases) and cellulitis (3 cases) were the most common clinical presentations. Breast, abdomen and lower limbs were t

Septic arthritis in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is rare and is reported in only 3% of patients. Contrary to lupus arthritis, which tends to be polyarticular in nature, primarily involving the small joints of the hands, septic arthritis is commonly monoarticular. Here, we present an unusual case of a patient with SLE, who developed oligoarticular inflammatory arthritis caused by a rare native joint pathogen Staphylococcus lugdunensis. The infection resulted in extensive early damage to the joints involved, highlighting the need for early diagnosis and treatment.

Staphylococcus lugdunensis is a coagulase-negative Staphylococcus (CoNS), and part of the normal skin flora. The bacterium is an emerging pathogen that, unlike other CoNS, resembles coagulase-positive Staphylococcus aureus infections in virulence, tissue destruction, and clinical course. We report a fatal case following minor surgery. The frequency of S. lugdunensis infections has probably been underestimated and under-reported in the past as few clinical laboratories routinely identify coagulase-negative Staphylococci.

INTRODUCTION: Staphylococcus lugdunensis is a coagulase-negative staphylococcus associated with a variety of clinical infections. In this paper we present the results of a comparative study using 4 methods to determine antimicrobial susceptibility to oxacillin and penicillin in 60 S. lugdunensis isolates.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We studied 60 S. lugdunensis isolates obtained from clinical specimens sent to our laboratory over an 8-year period. All isolates were free coagulase-negative and DNase-negative, and biochemically identified by API ID 32 STAPH (bioMérieux). Presence of mecA and ss-lacta

Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) refers to a group of disorders where differentiation and maturation of B cells into plasma cells are affected, leading to decreased or defective immunoglobulin production and subsequent immunodeficiency. Symptoms may present at any age between 5 and 72 years, although more severe forms often manifest earlier in life. Milder forms may not be detected. We present an intriguing case of a 69-year-old man presenting with recurrent pneumonia caused by a rare organism Staphylococcus lugdunensis, eventually determined to be caused by CVID. The patient had a good

A 57-year-old end stage renal disease patient on hemodialysis (HD) presented with sepsis secondary to right buttock abscess and overlying cellulitis. She was started on broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy and underwent incision and drainage with marked improvement. Her cultures grew methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus lugdunensis. This bacterium is more virulent than other coagulase negative staphylococci and has been implicated in causing a variety of serious infections but it has been underreported as a cause of skin infections in HD patients and possible other patient populations.

A 27-year-old woman visited our hospital because of high fever. She had been diagnosed as 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS) due to her cardiac history (tetralogy of Fallot), thymic hypoplasia and 22q11.2 deletion. She had a normal CD4/CD8 ratio, a slightly decreased lymphocyte count and normal serum immunoglobulin levels. Blood cultures were positive for Staphylococcus lugdunensis (S. lugdunensis). Infection route of S. lugdunensis in this case was unclear. The patient was successfully treated with several intravenous antibiotics. Infection should be considered when managing patients with

Staphylococcus lugdunensis is an aggressive, virulent member of the coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) that is responsible for severe, rapidly progressive skin and soft tissue infections and native valve endocarditis. To facilitate prompt identification and appropriate therapy, we describe here a rapid and robust multiplex real-time PCR assay that is able to definitively distinguish S. lugdunensis from other staphylococci. Using melting curve analysis, the assay also identifies Staphylococcus aureus and CoNS other than S. lugdunensis and determines MecA-dependent resistance to methicillin

Staphylococcus lugdunensis and Staphylococcus haemolyticus are unique among CoNS in that the former often causes aggressive disease, while the latter consistently exhibits high rates of multidrug resistance. We evaluated the in vitro susceptibility of contemporary (2012-2013) isolates from both pathogens to tedizolid and comparators, using standard methodology. Results were interpreted using CLSI and EUCAST breakpoints. Overall, 106 S. lugdunensis and 103 S. haemolyticus isolates were collected from 51 medical centers in the United States and 30 centers in 18 European countries. Tedizolid show

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus lugdunensis is a coagulase-negative Staphylococcus that has been increasingly recognised as a significant pathogen capable of causing invasive infections similar to Staphylococcus aureus. Data comparing the clinical manifestations and outcomes of S. lugdunensis bacteraemia to S. aureus bacteraemia remain limited. This article seeks to compare the two diseases in order to better understand the clinical course of S. lugdunensis bacteraemia.
AIMS: This study aims to compare the clinical course, management strategies, outcomes and complications of S. lugdunensis and S.

UNLABELLED: Staphylococcus lugdunensis is a common skin commensal. However, S. lugdunensis found in multiple blood culture sets is concerning for life-threatening bacteremia. When a single set is positive, the National Healthcare Safety Network classifies S. lugdunensis as a common commensal (contaminant), while multiple publications found bacteremia and suggested an Infectious Diseases (ID) consultation. Here, a retrospective review spanning 9 years at a large health system evaluated the clinical significance of a single-positive S. lugdunensis blood culture when multiple cultures were collec

We report a rare case of infectious spondylitis caused by Staphylococcus lugdunensis following lumbar percutaneous epidural neuroplasty (L-PEN). A 78-year-old man with chronic low back pain refractory to conservative treatment underwent L-PEN and subsequently developed worsening back and bilateral hip pain 18 days after the procedure, followed by progressive motor weakness. Initial laboratory evaluation revealed markedly elevated inflammatory markers. Contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated diffuse multilevel epidural enhancement with vertebral endplate involvement, consisten

Cutibacterium acnes is a key member of the human skin microbiome that contributes to host homeostasis. Staphylococcus lugdunensis, while also a resident of the skin microbiota, is an opportunistic pathogen capable of causing severe infections, associated with its ability to form biofilms. We previously showed that C. acnes secretes molecules that inhibit S. lugdunensis biofilm formation without affecting planktonic growth. Here, we demonstrate that C. acnes-derived molecules also significantly reduced S. lugdunensis adherence to and invasion of human epithelial cells, as well as adhesion to ke

UNLABELLED: Despite its dominance as a commensal, Staphylococcus lugdunensis (SLU) is a particularly virulent coagulase-negative Staphylococcus that is predominantly associated with community-acquired soft-tissue and skin infections. The aim of our study was to identify genotypic and phenotypic traits associated with the clinical presentations of SLU-associated infections, such as prosthetic joint infections, infective endocarditis (IE), and skin and soft tissue infections. Between January 2001 and December 2016, 73 pathogenic (including 18 strains responsible for IE) and 3 nonpathogenic SLU s

UNLABELLED: Lugdunin, produced by Staphylococcus lugdunensis, exhibits potent antimicrobial activity against a broad range of Gram-positive bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus. This study aims to elucidate the mechanisms underlying the susceptibility of S. aureus to lugdunin by screening a transposon-based mutant library generated using the lugdunin-susceptible S. aureus strain HG001. We identified four S. aureus mutants with mutations in ctaA, hemY, qoxA, and guaB, which are involved in ATP and GTP synthesis, and displayed increased susceptibility to S. lugdunensis. Further tests using

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus lugdunensis has been described as a pathogen of increasing importance in prosthetic joint infections (PJI). Our aim was to describe the clinical presentation of PJI caused by S. lugdunensis, and to correlate the biofilm-forming ability of the bacterial isolates to clinical outcome.
METHOD: S. lugdunensis isolates from PJI episodes during 2015-2019 were included and analysed for biofilm formation using a microtiter plate assay. Medical records from the corresponding patients were reviewed.
RESULTS: We identified 36 patients with PJI caused by S. lugdunensis during t
