Increased VA-ECMO Pump Speed Reduces Left Atrial Pressure: Insights from a Novel Biventricular Heart Model.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The effect of veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) on left atrial pressure (LAP) in the presence of interventricular interaction and the Frank-Starling mechanism is unknown. We developed and validated a mock circulatory loop (MCL) incorporating a novel, 3D-printed biventricular heart model and Frank-Starling algorithm, and used this model to assess the determinants of LAP during VA-ECMO support. METHODS: The MCL was designed to allow a separate ventricle or biventricular configuration, with or without an active Frank-Starling mechanism. The biventri

Description and molecular characteristics of Morishitium polonicum malayense Urabe, Nor Hashim & Uni, n. subsp. (Trematoda: Cyclocoelidae) from the Asian glossy starling, Aplonis panayensis strigata (Passeriformes: Sturnidae) in Peninsular Malaysia.

We describe Morishitium polonicum malayense n. subsp. from Asian glossy starlings (Aplonis panayensis strigata) (Horsfield, 1821) (Passeriformis: Sturnidae) caught in Malaysia. The trematodes had parasitized the air sacs and the thoracic and body cavities of 40 out of 67 (59.7%) birds examined. The specimens each had an oral sucker, a postpharyngeal genital pore, and tandem testes, but lacked a ventral sucker. The morphological characteristics of our specimens were similar to those of M. polonicum polonicum (Machalska, 1980) from Poland. However, the anterior extremity of vitelline follicles o

A robotic falcon induces similar collective escape responses in different bird species.

Patterns of collective escape of a bird flock from a predator are fascinating, but difficult to study under natural conditions because neither prey nor predator is under experimental control. We resolved this problem by using an artificial predator (RobotFalcon) resembling a peregrine falcon in morphology and behaviour. We imitated hunts by chasing flocks of corvids, gulls, starlings and lapwings with the RobotFalcon, and compared their patterns of collective escape to those when chased by a conventional drone and, in case of starlings, hunted by wild peregrine falcons. Active pursuit of flock

Attraction of Culex pipiens to uropygial gland secretions does not explain feeding preference for American robins.

Culex pipiens, the endemic mosquito vector of West Nile virus in eastern North America, is responsible for maintenance of the virus in avian reservoir hosts, the most important of which appears to be the American robin. One reason for the greater involvement of robins is believed to be the feeding preference of Cx. pipiens, however, the basis of this preference is not understood. We tested the hypothesis that the species-specific chemical profile of avian uropygial gland secretions are used by Cx. pipiens as cues to locate birds and, therefore, may contribute to the observed feeding preference

Outbreak of human infestation by Ornithonyssus sylviarum associated with migratory Sturnus roseus in Bukan, Iran, 2025.

Migratory birds act as important dispersal hosts for parasitic mites, facilitating their spread over long geographic distances and potentially contributing to the emergence of infestations in previously unaffected areas. This study investigates an unprecedented outbreak of mite infestation among residents of two villages in northwestern Iran, in July 2025. This outbreak coincided with the arrival and nesting of migratory rosy starlings (Sturnus roseus) within or near human dwellings. A comprehensive survey and clinical examination of the affected villagers revealed that 37.6% of residents in E

Evaluating the risk of pathogen transmission from wild animals to domestic pigs in Australia.

Wild animals contribute to endemic infection in livestock as well as the introduction, reintroduction and maintenance of pathogens. The source of introduction of endemic diseases to a piggery is often unknown and the extent of wildlife contribution to such local spread is largely unexplored. The aim of the current study was to quantitatively assess the probability of domestic pigs being exposed to different pathogens from wild animals commonly found around commercial piggeries in Australia. Specifically, this study aims to quantify the probability of exposure to the pathogens Escherichia coli,

[Validity of the arteriovenous oxygen difference as guidance for controlling the output of an artificial heart].

The possibility of controlling an artificial heart by the arteriovenous oxygen difference is discussed by means of the model simulation of the human organism. The simulation results are compared with these of the control by the Starling mechanism. No improvement of the results was obtainable because the behaviour of the arteriovenous oxygen difference is very dependent on the kind and the ascent of the load. The control of the artificial heart by the Starling mechanism appeared more favourable also on changed conditions in the atrium.

Simulation of some short-term control mechanisms in cardiovascular physiology.

The equivalent electronic circuit, developed to simulate cardiovascular physiology, is upgraded to incorporate negative feedback loops. In this way homeostasis of the arterial pressure is simulated in exercise, in haemorrhage, in the insufficiency of the aortic valve, and in hypervolemia. The results show that homeostasis supports the cardiovascular system by modulating Starling mechanism(s) in exercise, haemorrhage and hypervolemia. In aortic insufficiency it seems that only Starling mechanism(s) can maintain cardiac output and arterial pressure.

Influence of colony traits on ectoparasite infestation in birds breeding in mixed-species colonies.

Coloniality in birds is often associated with an increase in parasite burden, but whether the co-occurrence of several host species influences the prevalence and abundance of ectoparasites and their relationship with colony size or density remains poorly known. Here, we studied mixed-species breeding colonies formed after the provision of artificial breeding structures for restoring the lesser kestrel (Falco naumanni) population in Portugal, to investigate the influence of colony traits on ectoparasite infestation. We sampled four groups of ectoparasites (carnid flies, haematophagous mites, lo

Vascular endothelial growth factors in pulmonary edema: an update.

Pulmonary edema is a life-threatening complication of critical illness. Identification of the underlying mechanisms of pulmonary edema is a prerequisite for the development of adequate treatment. The initial description of fluid transportation across capillaries (Starling's law) while of critical importance, did not provide full insight into the underlying pathophysiology of vascular leakage. Pulmonary edema can be differentiated into two distinct categories based on the Starling theory; the high-permeability type is attributed to inflammatory changes occurring in conditions such as the adult

[Changes in the myocardial contractility of the left ventricle and in the central hemodynamic indices during the onset and termination of a paroxysmal tachycardia attack].

Three types of myocardial contractility and central hemodynamic response were identified on the basis of myocardial function and heart rate during an attack of paroxysmal tachycardia. Heart rates of up to 180 beats per minute are not associated with any myocardial contractility disorders, and hemodynamic disturbances are controlled by elevated myocardial inotropism. Heart rates reaching 190 beats/min are associated with a suppression of myocardial relaxation, and the Frank-Starling mechanism is added to elevated inotropism to control the disturbance. Where the heart rate is above 200 beats per

Molecular analysis of the hemagglutinin genes of Australian H7N7 influenza viruses: role of passerine birds in maintenance or transmission?

In 1985 a fowl plague-like disease occurred in chickens in Lockwood, Victoria, Australia and caused high mortality. An H7N7 influenza virus was isolated from the chickens (A/Chicken/Victoria/1/85); additionally, an antigenically similar virus was isolated from starlings (A/Starling/Victoria/5156/85) and serological evidence of H7N7 virus infection was found in sparrows. Antigenic analysis with monoclonal antibodies to H7, oligonucleotide mapping of total vRNA, and sequence analysis of the HA genes established that the chicken and starling influenza viruses were closely related and probably cam

From islands to infectomes: host-specific viral diversity among birds across remote islands.

BACKGROUND: Accelerating biodiversity loss necessitates monitoring the potential pathogens of vulnerable species. With a third of New Zealand's avifauna considered at risk of extinction, a greater understanding of the factors that influence microbial transmission in this island ecosystem is needed. We used metatranscriptomics to determine the viruses, as well as other microbial organisms (i.e. the infectomes), of seven bird species, including the once critically endangered black robin (Petroica traversi), on two islands in the remote Chatham Islands archipelago, New Zealand. RESULTS: We ident

Nutritional and other types of oedema, albumin, complex carbohydrates and the interstitium - a response to Malcolm Coulthard's hypothesis: Oedema in kwashiorkor is caused by hypo-albuminaemia.

The various types of oedema in man are considered in relation to Starling's hypothesis of fluid movement from capillaries, with the main emphasis on nutritional oedema and the nephrotic syndrome in children. It is concluded that each condition has sufficient anomalous findings to render Starling's hypothesis untenable. The finding that the endothelial glycocalyx is key to control of fluid movement from and into the capillaries calls for complete revision of our understanding of oedema formation. The factors so far known to affect the function of the glycocalyx are reviewed. As these depend upo

CHOROIDAL BLOOD FLOW: Review and Potential Explanation for the Choroidal Venous Anatomy Including the Vortex Vein System.

PURPOSE: To review control mechanisms for blood flow in the choroid, propose a system by which venous outflow is controlled by a Starling resistor, and propose an explanation for the choroidal venous architectural anatomy. METHODS: The main blood flow control mechanisms were reviewed including autoregulation, neurovascular coupling, and myogenic regulation. Applicable blood flow control mechanisms in the brain, a high flow organ in a low compliance outer shell, were used to examine analogous processes that may be occurring in the choroid. RESULTS: There does not seem to be effective autoregu

The metabolic cost of birdsong production.

The metabolic cost of birdsong production has not been studied in detail but is of importance in our understanding of how selective pressures shape song behavior. We measured rates of oxygen consumption during song in three songbird species, zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata), Waterslager canaries (Serinus canaria) and European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris). These species sing songs with different acoustic and temporal characteristics: short stereotyped song (zebra finch), long song with high temporal complexity (canary) and long song with high acoustic, but low temporal, complexity (starling)
