Contemporary appraisal of factors influencing pediatric dental program directors' selection of residents.

PURPOSE: With the increasing number of applicants and changes to information available in applications, pediatric dentistry program directors must adapt the resident selection process. The evaluation approach was significantly impacted when the National Board Dental Examination (NBDE) changed to a pass/fail grading system. The purposes of this are study to examine what criteria pediatric dentistry program directors now use to select residents, and to evaluate current criteria against those used in the past. METHODS: A 30-item survey was structured similar to a previous questionnaire used in 2

Leukoplakia revisited. A clinicopathologic study 3256 oral leukoplakias.

During a 13-year period, 3256 specimens clinically diagnosed as leukoplakia (('keratosis," "white patch") were submitted to the oral pathology laboratories of Indiana University School of Dentistry and Emory University School of Dentistry. These comprised 6.2% of the tissue specimens processed by these laboratories. The cases were analyzed as to age of occurrence, site of involvement, and pathologic findings. It was found that: leukoplakia occurs chiefly in the 5th, 6th, and 7th decades; about half of the lesions involved the mandibular mucosa, mandibular sulcus, and buccal mucosa; leukoplakia

American Academy of Periodontology Best Evidence Consensus Statement on Selected Oral Applications for Cone-Beam Computed Tomography.

BACKGROUND: The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) recently embarked on a Best Evidence Consensus (BEC) model of scientific inquiry to address questions of clinical importance in periodontology for which there is insufficient evidence to arrive at a definitive conclusion. This review addresses oral indications for use of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). METHODS: To develop the BEC, the AAP convened a panel of experts with knowledge of CBCT and substantial experience in applying CBCT to a broad range of clinical scenarios that involve critical structures in the oral cavity. The pane

The bitewing roentgenogram and its diagnostic importance.

The role of the bitewing roentgenogram in dentistry is reviewed, including the roentgenographic techniques used, accessories for stabilisation of the film, and execution of the roentgenograph. Common errors in application of the technique are listed. The literature on the bitewing roentgenogram is surveyed and the conclusion stated that this roentgenographic technique is a diagnostic instrument that has no substitute for the purpose of detecting incipient interproximal carious lesions and periodontal diseases in the early stages of affecting the alveolar bone. No dental examination can provide

Provision of Pediatric Dental Services by Pediatric Dentists Versus General Dentists: Secondary Dental Analysis of Medical Expenditure Panel Surveys.

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to determine whether visiting only a pediatric dentist (as opposed to visiting only a general dentist) was associated with the provision of preventive dental services for a U.S.-based pediatric population (those 18 years and younger). Methods: This study analyzed pooled Medical Expenditure Panel Survey data from 2018 and 2019 to compare the use of certain preventive dental services (i.e., examination, radiographs, prophylaxis, dental sealant, and fluoride treatment) among those who reported visiting a pediatric dentist versus those who visited a general de

Development of a measure of childhood information learning experiences related to dental anxiety.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to develop a measure of childhood information learning experiences related to dental anxiety according to Rachmnan's theory of fear acquisition entitled "Dental Information Learning History Questionnaire (DILHQ)" and to determine its test quality with regard to factorial validity, reliability, divergent, discriminant, and predictive validity. METHOD: Sample 1 included 228 dental patients, answering a 17-item-pool of the DILHQ, the Dental Anxiety Scale (DAS: Corah, 1969), and the Self-Consciousness Scale by Fenigstein et al. (1975). A second sample of 197 p

Risk factors for mental disorders develop early in German students of dentistry.

PURPOSE: We investigated mental risk factors such as symptoms of burnout and sense of coherence in students of dental medicine at the University of Erlangen in the context of a learning type survey. Our aim was to assess the presence of analogies to the results we had previously determined for students of human medicine. METHODS: We surveyed a total of 163 dentistry students during the first 2.5 years, up to the first state examination. To ensure comparability, the data were collected from all students at the beginning of each semester. Standardized, validated questionnaires on burnout sympto

Benchmarking GPT-5, Gemini 2.5 Pro, Grok 4, and other LLMs on pediatric dentistry questions from a dental specialization exam.

Artificial intelligence (AI), particularly large language models (LLMs), is an increasingly prominent tool in medical and dental education. Trained with deep learning and NLP techniques, these models interpret meaning, generate text, and manage complex information. They hold potential for practical educational applications, such as supporting exam preparation and personalized learning. Moreover, their performance in clinical case recognition suggests an emerging potential for use in diagnostic decision-support systems. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of state-of-the-art large lang

A Further Introduction to Dental Sleep Medicine.

Dental sleep medicine traditionally focuses on sleep-related breathing disorders, such as snoring and obstructive sleep apnea. However, everyday practice shows that also other sleep disorders touch on dentistry, including sleep-related orofacial pain, xerostomia, hypersalivation, gastroesophageal reflux disease and bruxism. A new definition, which covers all the diagnostic and treatment aspects of these disorders, has therefore been formulated for dental sleep medicine. This article describes why this development started and sketches the current state of affairs regarding the discipline of den

Multiple approaches to the reduction of dental fear.

Participant modeling, symbolic modeling, and graduated exposure were compared with each other and with two control treatments for effectiveness in reducing fear of dentistry in 33 adults who had avoided dental treatment for from 1 to 10 yr. Assessment of in-chair psychological responsiveness and overt behavior showed no significant pre-post change for any group although all of them reported significant reduction in state anxiety and expected pain. During the 24 months following treatment, from 50 to 87.5% of the subjects were able to return to regular dental care with the highest "return" rate

Are occlusal X-rays still used in X-ray diagnostics? - review.

Occlusal X-rays, as intraoral radiographs, have been used in radiological diagnostics in dentistry for ages. Occlusal X-rays cover a larger imaging field and have a complementary function to other intraoral two-dimensional radiographs. Since the introduction of Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT), the use of such X-rays has decreased significantly. Nevertheless, due to patients' low exposure to ionizing radiation, occlusal X-rays provide an alternative to three-dimensional techniques (CBCT). This paper presents state-of-the-art occlusal techniques and discusses their contemporary applications

Child abuse and neglect: dentistry's role.

While the actual incidence of child abuse has not been determined, the available statistics are grim. The dentist must view himself as a child advocate. Simply treating dental and facial injuries of abused children while ignoring the social needs of the child and family is unacceptable. State laws mandate reporting as well as protect the dentist from civil or criminal liability. Dentistry's contribution in the management of nonaccidental injuries is the recognition of the possibility of physical abuse, the treatment of orofacial injuries and reporting to the appropriate authorities.

Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Uniformed Services (CHAMPUS); TRICARE Dental Program. Office of the Secretary, DoD. Final rule.

This final rule revises the comprehensive CHAMPUS regulation pertaining to the Expanded Active Duty Dependents Benefit Plan, or more commonly referred to as the TRICARE Family Member Dental Plan (TFMDP). The TFMDP limited eligibility to eligible dependents of active duty members (under a call or order that does not specify a period of thirty (30) day or less). Concurrent with the timeframe of the publication of the proposed rule, the Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2000 (Public Law 106-65, sec. 711) was signed into law and its provisions have been incorporated into this final rule. Parental awareness and attitudes towards pediatric dentistry and children's oral health.

BACKGROUND: Parental lack of awareness about oral and dental health has been strongly linked to increased dental caries in children. Furthermore, many parents are not familiar with the pediatric dentistry specialty, resulting in limited knowledge regarding its role in maintaining children's oral health. Before designing effective educational interventions, understanding parental awareness and attitudes is essential. This cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate parents' awareness and attitudes regarding their children's oral and dental health, as well as pediatric dentistry. METHODS: A 24-ques

Decisional factors supporting the use of direct or indirect techniques and related esthetic biomaterials.

There are many options for restoring or improving a smile, including various tooth-colored biomaterials and clinical protocols. Some simple and limited tooth form or color corrections in young patients with healthy teeth logically call for a direct approach using composite resins, whereas more extensive smile rehabilitation in older patients with high esthetic demands should rationally be performed with ceramics. The various patient conditions that comprise these 'simple' examples, for which all practitioners may apply the same decision-making rationale, do not apply in increasingly complicate

Application of i-PRF in dentistry.

Injectable platelet-rich fibrin (i-PRF) is a novel platelet concentrate that has been employed in dentistry with the objective of promoting tissue regeneration and healing. In contrast to platelet-rich plasma (PRP), i-PRF is more straightforward to handle, more cost-effective, and free from anticoagulants, which reduces biochemical alterations. The i-PRF procedure was developed in 2014 by adjusting the centrifugation forces. The resulting product remains in a liquid state for approximately 15 minutes, gradually transforming into a growth factor-rich clot that releases continuously over 10-14 d

INTRODUCTION: The scoping review examined the evidence related to infection control and transmission measures of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in a dental setting during this pandemic. Dental practitioners are normally guided in practice by set ethical principles, thus the researchers wanted to determine how these rules are managed during this pandemic. METHODS: A protocol specific for the objectives of this study was developed according to the criteria for a scoping review.
