Effect of type of fatty acid attached to chitosan on walnut oil-in-water Pickering emulsion properties.

The effect of fatty acid type bonded to chitosan on the emulsifying properties of chitosan-based particles was investigated. Capric acid, myristic acid, and stearic acid were attached to chitosan chains. Longer fatty acids in the structure of chitosan lead to the better and more uniform formation of chitosan nanogels. The contact angle of chitosan, chitosan-capric acid, chitosan-myristic acid and chitosan-stearic acid were found to be 52.5°, 60.0°, 65.1° and 72.5°, respectively. Different chitosan nanogels were used to stabilize walnut oil emulsions, and the emulsion stabilized with chitosan-s

Accumulation and defective beta-oxidation of very long chain fatty acids in Zellweger's syndrome, adrenoleukodystrophy and Refsum's disease variants.

The accumulation of very long chain fatty acids in plasma and skin fibroblasts was measured in at least four separate inherited disease states. Both the magnitude and the nature of the fatty acid changes reflected the clinical status of individual patients. In Zellweger's syndrome, and to a lesser extent in infantile Refsum's disease, there was an increase in 24:0, 26:0, 26:1, and a number of even longer chain fatty acids, while in the X-linked form of adrenoleukodystrophy these changes were less pronounced. Zellweger fibroblasts in culture took up lignoceric, phytanic and stearic acids and in

Efficient Fractionation and Analysis of Fatty Acids and their Salts in Fat, Oil and Grease (FOG) Deposits.

A fractionation methodology of fat, oil and grease (FOG) deposits was developed based on the insolubility of fatty acid salts in dichloromethane (DCM) and the relatively high solubility of fatty acids and triglycerides in DCM. Using this method, coupled with spectral analysis, it was shown that fatty acids rather than fatty acid salts were the predominant species in FOG deposits obtained from three metropolitan locations in the United States and that fatty acid triglycerides were either not detected or were present in very small concentrations. This solubility-based fractionation approach also

Effect of castration and cryptorchidism on fatty acid content of ovine adipose tissue.

Fatty acid analyses of perinephric and subcutaneous adipose tissue were made on 50 of Mehraban and Bakhriari breeds lambs to determine the effect of castration and cryptorchidism on ovine lipid composition. The level of stearic acid was significantly higher (p < 0·05) in cryptorchids than in wethers. Rams were also higher (p < 0·05) in the percentage of linoleic acid of the internal adipose tissue than wethers. The percentage of palmitic acid of subcutaneous tissue was higher (p < 0·05) in cryptorchid than rams. There was a tendency toward less saturated (palmitic and stearic) acids, but more

Compatibility of sennoside A and B with pharmaceutical excipients.

This study reports the incompatibility of sennoside A and B with the following commonly used pharmaceutical excipients: stearic acid, sodium carbonate, glucose, lactose, propyl paraben, sodium carbonate, stearic acid, citric acid, PEG, and sorbitol. Drug-excipient compatibility was tested using thermal (DSC) and analytical (HPLC) methods of analysis. Compatibility evaluation showed that dry powder mixtures could be used to formulate sennoside A and B products. However, when mixed with water--propyl paraben, sodium carbonate, stearic acid, citric acid, PEG, and sugar derivatives such as lactose

Determination of calcium stearate in polyolefin samples by gas chromatographic technique after performing dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction.

In this study, a gas chromatographic method is presented for the determination of calcium stearate after its conversion to stearic acid in a polymeric matrix. A solution of hydrochloric acid in 2-propanol is used as an extracting solvent of calcium stearate and its converter to stearic acid. For stearic acid preconcentration before its injection to a separation system, a recently presented extraction method, dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction, using carbon tetrachloride as an extracting solvent is used. Finally, 1 microL of the organic phase collected at the bottom of a conical test tube

Plasma fatty acid esters of hydroxy fatty acids and surrogate fatty acid esters of hydroxy fatty acids hydrolysis activity in children with or without obesity and in adults with or without coronary artery disease.

AIM: Fatty acid esters of hydroxy fatty acids (FAHFA) are a class of bioactive lipids with anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic and cardioprotective properties. FAHFA hydrolysis into its fatty acid (FA) and hydroxy fatty acid (HFA) constituents can affect the bioavailability of FAHFA and its subsequent biological effects. We aimed to investigate FAHFA levels and FAHFA hydrolysis activity in children with or without obesity, and in adults with or without coronary artery disease (CAD). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Our study cohort included 20 children without obesity, 40 children with obesity, 10 adults w

Human studies using isotope labeled fatty acids: answered and unanswered questions.

Human studies using deuterium-labeled fatty acids have answered many questions related to the metabolism and health effects of dietary fats. These studies also raised a number of unanswered questions and unresolved issues. For example, studies with cis and trans positional isomers dispelled concerns and allegations that the isomers in partially hydrogenated fats were poorly absorbed, accumulate in undesirable phospholipid acyl positions, mimic stearic acid and competed with oleic acid. Trans 18:1 isomers were metabolically intermediate between 16:0 and 18:0, so the unanswered question is why a

Fatty acids, inhibitors for the DNA binding of c-Myc/Max dimer, suppress proliferation and induce apoptosis of differentiated HL-60 human leukemia cell.

c-Myc is instrumental in the progression of Burkitt's lymphoma including HL-60 human leukemia cells. We tested fatty acids for their inhibitory effect on the DNA binding of c-Myc/Max dimeric proteins of human origin, prepared as recombinant proteins encompassing DNA binding (basic) and dimerization (HLHZip) domain, and found that those suppress proliferation and induce apoptosis of DMSO-differentiated HL-60 cells. The analyzed IC50 values of myristic acid, stearic acid, gamma-linolenic acid, linoleic acid, linolenic acid and arachidonic acid by EMSA were 97(+/-3), 2.2(+/-1.2), 55(+/-5), 32(+/-

Sulfatide with short fatty acid dominates in astrocytes and neurons.

Glycosphingolipids are located in cell membranes and the brain is especially enriched. We speculated that the subcellular location of glycosphingolipids depends on their fatty acid chain length because their sugar residues are constant, whereas fatty acid chain length can vary within the same molecule. To test this hypothesis we analysed the glycosphingolipid sulfatide, which is highly abundant in myelin and has mostly long fatty acids. We used a negative ion electrospray tandem mass spectrometry precursor ion scan to analyse the molecular species of sulfatide in cultured astrocytes and a mous

Physiochemical interactions of praziquantel, oxamniquine and tablet excipients.

A differential scanning calorimetry and infrared spectrophotometry study of potential interactions between oxamniquine and praziquantel, two synergistic anti-parasitic drugs, indicated that they did not interact on fusion. Mixtures of the two drugs with each of nine common pharmaceutical excipients (Ac-Di-Sol, Avicel, Crospovidone, calcium phosphate, magnesium stearate, starch, lactose, PEG 6000, stearic acid) appeared to interact only with stearic acid. These results suggested that a combination solid dosage form was feasible.

An investigation into the use of stepwise isothermal high sensitivity DSC as a means of detecting drug-excipient incompatibility.

The use of stepwise isothermal high sensitivity differential scanning calorimetry (HSDSC) as a novel means of detecting excipient incompatibility is described using aspirin mixes with magnesium stearate and stearic acid as model systems. Aspirin, magnesium stearate and stearic acid alone and as mixes were studied in scanning mode using conventional DSC and were then subjected to a stepwise heating programme using HSDSC, whereby the samples were heated to temperatures between 45 and 70 degrees C and held for 1 h, during which the heat flow to or from the sample was measured. The data indicated

The Bovine Hepatic Cell Line BFH12 as a Possible Model for Hepatosteatosis in Dairy Cows.

Hepatosteatosis is a common metabolic disorder of dairy cows, especially during early lactation. Currently, there are a few models of bovine hepatic steatosis available, including primary hepatocytes, liver slices, and animal models. Studies that elucidate the influence of single fatty acids on lipid classes, fatty acid pattern, gene expression, and phenotypic changes are still limited. Hence, we investigated the suitability of the fetal bovine hepatocyte-derived cell line BFH12 as a model for hepatosteatosis. To create a steatotic environment, we treated BFH12 with stearic acid, palmitic acid
