Correction of severe wrist deformity following physeal arrest of the distal radius with the aid of a three-dimensional computer simulation.

Growth arrest following physeal injury may result in severe limb deformity. We report a case of complex wrist deformity caused by injury to the distal radial physis resulting in radial shortening and abnormal inclination of the radial articular surface, which was successfully treated by gradual correction after computer simulation. The simulation enabled us to develop an appropriate operative plan by accurately calculating the axis of the three-dimensional (3D) deformity using computer bone models. In the simulative surgery with a full-size stereolithography bone model, an Ilizarov external fi

Additive Manufacturing for Guided Bone Regeneration: A Perspective for Alveolar Ridge Augmentation.

Three-dimensional (3D) printing has become an important tool in the field of tissue engineering and its further development will lead to completely new clinical possibilities. The ability to create tissue scaffolds with controllable characteristics, such as internal architecture, porosity, and interconnectivity make it highly desirable in comparison to conventional techniques, which lack a defined structure and repeatability between scaffolds. Furthermore, 3D printing allows for the production of scaffolds with patient-specific dimensions using computer-aided design. The availability of commer

Reverse engineering--rapid prototyping of the skull in forensic trauma analysis.

Rapid prototyping (RP) comprises a variety of automated manufacturing techniques such as selective laser sintering (SLS), stereolithography, and three-dimensional printing (3DP), which use virtual 3D data sets to fabricate solid forms in a layer-by-layer technique. Despite a growing demand for (virtual) reconstruction models in daily forensic casework, maceration of the skull is frequently assigned to ensure haptic evidence presentation in the courtroom. Owing to the progress in the field of forensic radiology, 3D data sets of relevant cases are usually available to the forensic expert. Here,

Pelvic modelling and the comparison between plate position for double pelvic osteotomy using artificial cancellous bone and finite element analysis.

BACKGROUND: Finite element analysis was used to compare fixation methods for double pelvic osteotomy (DPO). Using 3D scanning a stereolithography (stl) image was produced of a canine pelvis and this was subsequently refined in computer aided design (CAD). Using the CAD files, the images were imported in MSC Marc software to produce a working finite element (FE) model with 3 dimensional tetrahedral elements with linear shaped functions. The dimensions of a precontoured pelvic osteotomy plate with eight screws and a twisted seven screw straight plate were used to build the 2 fixations implants f

Defining Operational Limits of Low-Cost MSLA 3D Printing for Microfluidic Systems: Resin Performance, Cell Compatibility, and Fluid Dynamics.

Additive manufacturing using low-cost masked stereolithography technology is an attractive option to democratize microfluidic devices fabrication, albeit with limits in spatial resolution, optical transparency, cytotoxicity, and replication that need to be addressed. In this work, five transparent masked stereolithography resins employed in an Anycubic Photon M7 Pro low-cost printer are systematically studied to address the limitations mentioned above. The working route was based on the analysis of the dimensions of negative and positive microfeatures, their transmission spectra, their cytotox

Comparison of 2 methods of making surgical models for correction of facial asymmetry.

PURPOSE: Stereolithography is useful in reconstructive surgery in that the surgical template or customized implant can be prefabricated on the models. To correct facial asymmetry, prior reshaping of the replica of the original structures is frequently required before it can be used as a surgical model. This is traditionally accomplished by direct sculpturing. This method has its limitations in clinical use. Recently, we developed a method using computer techniques to reconstruct the required structures. We herein report several of its applications in a variety of clinical situations and compar

Influence of build orientation and storage duration on the accuracy of fused deposition modeling-fabricated polyetheretherketone removable partial denture frameworks.

This study investigated the effects of build orientation and water-storage duration on the dimensional accuracy of fused deposition modeling (FDM)-fabricated polyetheretherketone (PEEK) removable partial denture (RPD) frameworks. The specimen geometry was designed using computer-aided design (CAD) software to simulate a maxillary RPD framework and printed in three build orientations (0°, 45°, 90°; n=6). After annealing, specimens were immersed in 37°C water and scanned after 24 h, 1 week, 1 month, 2 months, 4 months, and 6 months. Trueness was calculated by superimposing scanned stereolithogra

Monolithic affinity columns in 3D printed microfluidics for chikungunya RNA detection.

Mosquito-borne pathogens plague much of the world, yet rapid and simple diagnosis is not available for many affected patients. Using a custom stereolithography 3D printer, we created microfluidic devices with affinity monoliths that could retain, noncovalently attach a fluorescent tag, and detect oligonucleotide and viral RNA. We optimized the fluorescent binding and sample load times using an oligonucleotide sequence from chikungunya virus (CHIKV). We also tested the specificity of CHIKV capture relative to genetically similar Sindbis virus. Moreover, viral RNA from both viruses was flowed th

Biomanufacturing Vascular Matrix-Mimetic Hydrogels from Quantified Arterial Micromechanics and Microstructure.

The microstructural and micromechanical properties of the arterial extracellular matrix (ECM) are central to vascular cell behavior but are disrupted by disease and aging. Elastin and fibrillar collagens provide essential cues, yet the effects of disease-associated ECM remodeling on smooth muscle function remain poorly defined. Here, we imaged fibrillar ECM components across layers of healthy and hypertensive arteries in a large animal model and quantified their stiffness with submicron and piconewton resolution. These animal-derived data guided the fabrication of artery-mimetic hydrogels usin

Low-Cost, Rapid Fabrication of Customizable Polyethylene Glycol-Based Cell Culture Devices.

Biological research groups may face a high barrier to entry when constructing custom 3D cell culture devices to investigate multi-tissue interactions in vitro. Standard fabrication methods such as lithography, etching, or molding are expensive and require specialized equipment and expertise. To address this, we developed an accessible approach for producing polyethylene glycol (PEG)-based cell culture devices using stereolithography 3D printing with a polydimethylsiloxane intermediate mold. Both the intermediate molding steps and the sterilized final device show low cytotoxicity, and the final

Up-Cycling of LCD Glass by Additive Manufacturing of Porous Translucent Glass Scaffolds.

Additive manufacturing technologies, compared to conventional shaping methods, offer great opportunities in design versatility, for the manufacturing of highly porous ceramic components. However, the application to glass powders, later subjected to viscous flow sintering, involves significant challenges, especially in shape retention and in the achievement of a substantial degree of translucency in the final products. The present paper disclosed the potential of glass recovered from liquid crystal displays (LCD) for the manufacturing of highly porous scaffolds by direct ink writing and masked

4D physiologically adaptable cardiac patch: A 4-month in vivo study for the treatment of myocardial infarction.

There has been considerable progress in engineering cardiac scaffolds for the treatment of myocardial infarction (MI). However, it is still challenging to replicate the structural specificity and variability of cardiac tissues using traditional bioengineering approaches. In this study, a four-dimensional (4D) cardiac patch with physiological adaptability has been printed by beam-scanning stereolithography. By combining a unique 4D self-morphing capacity with expandable microstructure, the specific design has been shown to improve both the biomechanical properties of the patches themselves and
