Assessing the thyroid autoimmunity association with recurrent aphthous stomatitis.

BACKGROUND: Recent investigations have highlighted autoimmune origins and abnormal immune responses; particularly those related to T cell-mediated immunity and elevated T lymphocyte cells in the oral mucosa. Therefore, we investigated the relationship between recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) and autoimmune thyroid diseases (ATDs) in an Iranian population. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed on 102 patients diagnosed with ATD (cases) and 102 healthy patients (controls) who had been referred for the routine dental treatment. All participants were asked for the history of RAS and t

Prevalence of Aphthous Stomatitis: A Cross-Sectional Epidemiological Study.

Introduction Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is a common ulcer of idiopathic etiology but is recurrent, causing painful ulcers in the non-keratinized mucosa. The disease is commonly seen in people aged 10-40 years. The etiology of RAS has yet to be well established, but several risk factors that lead to the development of RAS have been proven in the literature. With an unknown etiology, developing a definitive cure and maintaining disease remission remains challenging. An epidemiological survey will shed some light on the disease's prevalence, which could provide insights into disease mana

Subclinical ocular inflammation in patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis.

OBJECTIVE: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is the major finding of Behçet's disease as well as an inflammatory disease. We compared the choroidal thickness (CT) in patients with RAS with healthy volunteers. METHODS: Patients with RAS (n = 34) and age- and sex-matched controls (n = 34) were evaluated using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT). CT measurements were executed at 3 different points (subfoveal, nasal, and temporal). Laboratory parameters were determined for patients and controls. RESULTS: The mean subfoveal CT in the RAS and control groups were 356.7 ± 91.7 μm an

Evolution of Drug Delivery Systems for Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis.

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is a disease marked by painful oral lesions on the buccal and labial mucosa or tongue. Drug delivery systems (DDS) for RAS include topical forms that manage wound healing, cover the ulcer, and relieve the associated pain. DDS targeting the oral mucosa face a major challenge, especially the short residence times in the mouth due to the effect of "saliva wash-out", which continually removes the drug. The objective of this review is to study the development of preparation forms and delivery systems of various types and preparations that have been used for RAS m

Periodic fever, aphthous stomatitis, pharyngitis, and adenitis (PFAPA) syndrome.

Periodic fever, aphthous stomatitis, pharyngitis, and adenitis (PFAPA) syndrome, the most common periodic disorder of childhood, presents with the cardinal symptoms of periodic fever, aphthous stomatitis, pharyngitis, and adenitis typically before age 5. This review presents the recent literature on PFAPA and summarizes key findings in the pathogenesis, evaluation, and treatment of the disease. Theories surrounding the pathogenesis of PFAPA include a faulty innate immunologic response in conjunction with dysregulated T-cell activation. A potential genetic link is also under consideration. Clinical assessment of disease severity in recurrent aphthous stomatitis.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is one of the most common oral mucosal diseases in many parts of the world. However, there is very limited published clinical evidence for the therapies used in this condition. This could be partly due to the difficulty in evaluating the efficacy of oral ulcer treatment objectively. In this paper, we present a method for assessing and monitoring the severity of oral ulcers before and after treatment. METHODS: Six ulcer characteristics, number, size, duration, ulcer-free period, site and pain, were used to generate an ulcer severity score (USS).

Oral poliovirus vaccine in management of recurrent aphthous stomatitis.

Oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV) is reported to be effective in treatment of recurrent herpes simplex (RHS). According to our observation during recent years, OPV was not only effective in management of RHS but also in some patients with concomitant recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) reducing its severity and frequency. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of OPV in the management of RAS. In a longitudinal, case--control study 48 patients with RAS were recruited. Twenty patients received OPV and 28 patients received placebo. OPV was administered in a dose of 4 drops at monthly

Quantitative distribution of inflammatory cells in recurrent aphthous stomatitis.

Histologic quantitation of leukocytes in biopsies of recurrent aphthous ulcers revealed at least two morphologically-distinct inflammatory infiltrates. Lymphocytes were found consistently in pre-ulcerative lesions and in the expanding margins of the developing ulcer. In contrast, polymorphonuclear leukocytes predominated only in areas of frank ulceration.

Dietary Antioxidant Index and the Risk of Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is a common condition that affects the oral mucosa. Antioxidants are crucial in neutralizing free radicals in the body and may have a preventive role against RAS. This study aims to examine the association between dietary antioxidant index (DAI) and RAS occurrence. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 144 individuals with RAS and 135 individuals without RAS. The dietary intake of the participants was assessed using the food frequency questionnaire. The DAI was applied to measure the antioxidant capacity of the diet. Logistic regr

Treatment of Aphthous Stomatitis with topical Alchemilla vulgaris in glycerine.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Recurrent aphthous ulceration is the most common oral mucosal disease known. It presents as three types: minor (most prevalent), major and herpetiform. However, there are no well established effective and reliable treatments of this condition. Alchemilla vulgaris (Lady's Mantle) has traditionally been used in oral hygiene and was recently shown to accelerate wound healing when used in combination with glycerine. The objective of this study was to determine whether this combination is effective in the treatment of the most prevalent form of aphthous ulcers. METHODS: A

Efficacy of bioadhesive patches in the treatment of recurrent aphthous stomatitis.

This study evaluated the efficacy of bioadhesive hydrogel patches, made of a pharmaceutical grade cellulose derivative, in the control of pain and as an aid to healing of aphthous ulceration. Patients kept a twice daily ulcer diary to record their pain level on a visual analogue scale. The sensitivity of the test ulcer was assessed by a challenge with pure orange juice as a stimulant before and after application of the patch by the patient. A significant reduction in stimulated pain was recorded following application of the patches to the ulcers (P < 0.01). The patches were found to adhere lon
