Enfermedades infecciosas y microbiologia clinica (English ed.)2023eng
INTRODUCTION: Streptococcus bovis/equinus complex (SBEC) is a major cause of infective endocarditis (IE), although its incidence varies greatly depending on the geographical area. The characteristics of IE caused by Streptococcus gallolyticus susp. gallolyticus are well known; there are hardly any descriptions of IE caused by other species or biotypes.
METHODS: Retrospective cohort study, from 1990 to 2019, of all SBEC IE in adults in three Spanish hospitals, Lugo (LH), Barcelona (BH) and Ferrol (FH) where the population is mainly rural, urban and mixed, respectively. The incidence of IE was

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Colorectal cancer (CRC) development has been associated with increased proportions of Bacteroides fragilis and certain Streptococcus, Fusobacterium, and Peptostreptococcus species in the intestinal microbiota. We investigated associations between bacteremia from specific intestinal microbes and occurrence of CRC.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective study after collecting data on 13,096 adult patients (exposed group) in Hong Kong hospitalized with bacteremia (identified by blood culture test) without a previous diagnosis of cancer from January 1, 2006 through December 31,

The aim of this study was to characterize staphylococci and streptococci in milk from Egyptian bovides. In total, 50 milk samples were collected from localities in the Nile Delta region of Egypt. Isolates were cultivated, identified using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS), and antibiotic susceptibility testing was performed by the broth microdilution method. PCR amplifications were carried out, targeting resistance-associated genes. Thirty-eight Staphylococcus isolates and six Streptococcus isolates could be cultivated. Staphylococcus a

PURPOSE: Association between S. gallolyticus infective endocarditis (IE) and malignant lesions of the gastrointestinal tract is well described. We hypothesize that other enteropathogenic microorganisms, such as S. viridans and E. faecalis are also related with colorectal pathology. Our aim is to determine the frequency of focal colorectal FDG deposits, suggestive of tumoral lesions and their correlation with colorectal pathology, in patients with infection caused by different commensal microorganisms of the gastrointestinal tract.
METHODS: We retrospectively examined 61 patients diagnosed wit

A juvenile racing pigeon ( Columba livia ) was presented with drooping of the wing and inability to fly. On physical examination, the right shoulder joint was swollen. The pigeon was euthanatized and submitted for necropsy. An excessive amount of fibrin was present in the canalis triosseus with severe arthritis of the affected shoulder joint. A pure growth of Mycoplasma-like colonies was obtained on microbiological culture of the shoulder joint. A 16S ribosomal RNA gene-specific polymerase chain reaction assay was performed on the isolate and revealed 100% similarity with Mycoplasma columbinum

The Streptococcus bovis/Streptococcus equinus complex (SBSEC) comprises several species inhabiting the animal and human gastrointestinal tract (GIT). They match the pathobiont description, are potential zoonotic agents and technological organisms in fermented foods. SBSEC members are associated with multiple diseases in humans and animals including ruminal acidosis, infective endocarditis (IE) and colorectal cancer (CRC). Therefore, this review aims to re-evaluate adhesion and colonization abilities of SBSEC members of animal, human and food origin paired with genomic and functional host-micro

Colorectal cancer (CRC) remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related mortality worldwide, largely due to late-stage diagnosis and the limited sensitivity of current screening approaches for early lesions. In recent years, the gut microbiota has emerged as a key factor in colorectal carcinogenesis, offering promising opportunities for the development of novel, non-invasive diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. Specific bacterial species and microbial metabolites have been implicated in colorectal carcinogenesis and are under investigation as potential biomarkers for CRC detection. Howev

BACKGROUND: Infective endocarditis (IE) is associated with high rates of mortality. Prolonged treatments with high-dose intravenous antibiotics often fail to eradicate the infection, frequently leading to high-risk surgical intervention. By providing a mechanism of antibiotic tolerance, which escapes conventional antibiotic susceptibility profiling, microbial biofilm represents a key diagnostic and therapeutic challenge for clinicians. This study aims at assessing a rapid biofilm identification assay and a targeted antimicrobial susceptibility profile of biofilm-growing bacteria in patients wi

The Streptococcus bovis group (SBG) comprises several microorganisms associated with human infections. They have been associated with bacteremia, endocarditis, biliary tract infection, meningitis, and colorectal cancer, but their role as urinary pathogens is not well known. The objective of this investigation was to discover the incidence and clinical significance of the bacteriuria associated with this complex. A retrospective analysis of all adult patients with bacteriuria caused by SBG during the period 1995-2012 was carried out. During the study period, SBG was isolated in 153 adult patien

Streptococcus infantarius subspecies coli (formerly S. lutetiensis), a member of the S. bovis/S. equinus complex (SBSEC), is a rare cause of neonatal and infantile infection. In contrast to more common pathogens seen in this age group (ie, S. agalactiae (group B Streptococcus)), SBSEC organisms are infrequently implicated in neonatal and infantile meningitis. A previously healthy infant male presented with fever, irritability and poor feeding. Lumbar puncture revealed cloudy cerebrospinal fluid with elevated white cells, high protein and low glucose. Gram stain showed polymorphonuclear leucocy

We characterized 22 human clinical strains of Streptococcus bovis by genotypic (16S rRNA gene sequence analysis [MicroSeq]; Applied Biosystems, Foster City, Calif.) and phenotypic (API 20 Strep and Rapid ID32 Strep systems (bioMerieux Vitek, Hazelton, Mo.) methods. The strains, isolated from blood, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and urine, formed two distinct 16S ribosomal DNA sequence clusters. Three strains which were associated with endocarditis urinary tract infection (UTI), and sepsis clustered with the S. bovis type strain ATCC 33317 (cluster 1); other closely related type strains were S. eq

BACKGROUND: Cancer is one of the major comorbidities in patients with sepsis, and conversely, bloodstream infections (BSI) may precede the diagnosis of colorectal malignancy, in particular when Streptococcus gallolyticus is isolated. We present the rare case of an Escherichia coli BSI preceding the diagnosis of rectal adenocarcinoma.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 56-year-old man with a history of ocular myasthenia gravis presented with fever and shaking chills, and was diagnosed with E. coli BSI of unknown origin. After a thorough history and examination, diagnostic workup revealed a rectal adenocarci

INTRODUCTION: Endocarditis is a life-threatening infection of the heart valves, frequently caused by pathogenic bacteria. The growth of multidrug-resistant bacteria necessitates the development of innovative therapeutic techniques, such as vaccines.
METHODS: The current study employed core proteome analysis and a computational-based reverse vaccinology approach across multiple bacterial pathogens associated with endocarditis to identify prospective universal vaccine candidates. The core proteome analysis contained 121 highly pathogenic strains from ten distinct pathogens (Streptococcus mutans

Diet and the gut microbiome are major, interdependent determinants of colorectal cancer (CRC) risk. This review discusses current evidence on how dietary patterns reshape microbial ecology, modulate microbial virulence, and alter host metabolic, inflammatory, and oncogenic pathways to influence colorectal carcinogenesis. We highlight key CRC-associated microbes, including pks⁺ Escherichia coli, Fusobacterium nucleatum, enterotoxigenic Bacteroides fragilis, and Streptococcus gallolyticus, and discuss how diet governs their abundance, toxin production, and oncogenic potential. Mechanistic invest

BACKGROUND: Streptococci frequently cause infective endocarditis (IE), yet the prevalence of IE in patients with bloodstream infections (BSIs) caused by different streptococcal species is unknown. We aimed to investigate the prevalence of IE at species level in patients with streptococcal BSIs.
METHODS: We investigated all patients with streptococcal BSIs, from 2008 to 2017, in the Capital Region of Denmark. Data were crosslinked with Danish nationwide registries for identification of concomitant hospitalization with IE. In a multivariable logistic regression analysis, we investigated the ris

Sequencing of 16S rDNA, and of sodAint and rpoBint in some cases, was applied to DNA from heart valves of 46 patients (36 with definite and 10 with possible endocarditis). Sequence-based identifications were compared with those obtained with conventional methods. Among the 36 definite cases, 30 had positive blood cultures and 6 had negative cultures. Among the 30 positive cases, sequencing of 16S rDNA permitted identification of species (18), genus (8), or neither (4); sodAint and rpoBint sequencing was necessary for species identification in 8 cases. Species identifications were identical in

The aim of this study was to evaluate whether dietary supplementation with an innovative silage (IS) created using 60% olive mill waste, 20% grape pomace, and 20% deproteinised feta cheese waste solids can modulate the composition of the intestinal microbiota in weaned (Exp. 1) and finishing (Exp. 2) pigs. In Exp. 1 (40 day supplementation), forty-five crossbred weaned pigs were randomly assigned to the 0% (Control), 5%, or 10% IS groups (15 replicates/experimental diet). In Exp. 2 (60 day supplementation), eighteen finishing pigs from Exp. 1 were fed the control diet for 8 weeks before being
