Clinical microbiology and infection : the official publication of the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases2026eng
OBJECTIVES: Streptococcus suis is an emerging zoonotic porcine pathogen and a leading cause of adult bacterial meningitis in Southeast Asia, associated with raw pork consumption. Most zoonotic S. suis infections globally are caused by strains from lineage CC1 carrying a serotype 2 capsule. However, in Thailand, ∼40% of the reported zoonotic infections are caused by 2 endemic lineages, CC104 and CC233, which also have a serotype 2 capsule. In this study, we aimed to identify the drivers of the emergence and recent evolution of these two lineages.
METHODS: We sequenced the whole genomes of 141

BACKGROUND: The increased resistance of bacterial pathogens to fluoroquinolones (FQs), such as norfloxacin and ciprofloxacin, supports the need to develop new antibacterial drugs and combination therapies using conventional antibiotics. The LuxS/AI-2 quorum sensing (QS) system can regulate the complex group behaviour of Streptococcus suis and impact its susceptibility to FQs.
OBJECTIVES: We investigated the combination of paeoniflorin and norfloxacin as a novel and effective strategy against FQ-resistant S. suis.
METHODS: FIC, AI-2 activity assay, real-time RT-PCR and biofilm inhibition assa

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus suis (S. suis) is an emerging zoonotic human pathogen, which commonly causes meningitis and sepsis. Ocular infections associated with S. suis infection are very rare. Herein, we reported a rare case of a man who developed endophthalmitis complicated by meningitis following S. suis infection.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 48-year-old male with a fever, loss of vision in the right eye, slight headache, and hearing loss in the right ear was admitted to our hospital. A comprehensive ophthalmological examination suggested endophthalmitis. The metagenomics next-generation sequencin

To investigate Streptococcus suis (S.suis) isolated from patients in Shandong province using genomic epidemiology and pathogenologic analysis. To provide the foundation to establish reasonable and accurate prevention and control measures of human S. suis infection. Molecular typing, whole genome phylogenetic tree, virulence gene typing, antibiotic resistance profile and mobile genetic elements carrying antibiotic resistance genes of isolated S. suis strains were investigated. The pathogenicity of isolated strains was also evaluated by comparing their capacity to induce pro-inflammatory cytokin

Streptococcus suis is a swine pathogen and zoonotic agent responsible for economic losses to the porcine industry. Infected animals may develop meningitis, arthritis, endocarditis, sepsis and/or sudden death. The pathogenesis of the infection implies that bacteria breach mucosal host barriers and reach the bloodstream, where they escape immune-surveillance mechanisms and spread throughout the organism. The clinical manifestations are mainly the consequence of an exacerbated inflammation, defined by an exaggerated production of cytokines and recruitment of immune cells. Among them, neutrophils

INTRODUCTION: Streptococcus suis (S. suis) infection is poorly described zoonosis in our country, which is related with exposure to pigs or their meat. The most common clinical presentation is meningitis, while spinés involvement is rare.
METHODS: We report 2 cases of S. suis infection and perform a systematic review of the articles published on S. suis spondylodiscitis between January 1994 and May 2020 with the aim of defining the clinical characteristics, predisposing factors and evolution.
RESULTS: 17 cases are described, 76.5% males with a mean age of 57.6 years, generally without associ

Streptococcus suis (S. suis) is one of the most common swine pathogens in the swine industry and leads to great harm to the normal progress of the swine industry. S. suis can also infect humans and cause a variety of fatal diseases, such as meningitis and streptococcal toxic shock syndrome, that pose a major threat to the safety of life and health of both humans and animals. In this paper, we found that isorhamnetin, a natural flavonoid compound without activity against S. suis, could significantly reduce the S. suis-stimulated production of the inflammatory cytokines interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6

Urban wild boars (Sus scrofa) from Barcelona, Spain, harbor great diversity of Streptococcus suis strains, including strains with the cps2 gene and with the same molecular profile as local human cases. The increasing trend of potential effective contacts for S. suis transmission is of public health concern.

Streptococcus suis (S. suis) is a major swine pathogen and an important zoonotic agent. Like most pathogens, the ability of S. suis to form biofilms plays a significant role in its virulence and drug resistance. A better understanding of the mechanisms involved in biofilm formation by S. suis as well as of the methods to efficiently remove and kill biofilm-embedded bacteria can be of high interest for the prevention and treatment of S. suis infections. The aim of this literature review is to update our current knowledge of S. suis biofilm formation, regulatory mechanisms, drug-resistance mecha

Streptococcus suis is an important cause of meningitis, arthritis, and sudden death in young piglets and of meningitis in humans. A novel temperate S. suis-specific bacteriophage (ϕNJ2) was identified. The phage was induced from the S. suis strain NJ2 by using mitomycin C, and the whole genome sequence was determined. The ϕNJ2 genome is 37,282 bp in length and contains 56 open reading frames (ORFs). While 31 ORFs (55%) encoded hypothetical proteins, other ORFs were predicted to be functional, clearly indicating the novelty of ϕNJ2.

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus suis serotype 2 (S. suis 2, SS2) is a major zoonotic pathogen that causes only sporadic cases of meningitis and sepsis in humans. Most if not all cases of Streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS) that have been well-documented to date were associated with the non-SS2 group A streptococcus (GAS). However, a recent large-scale outbreak of SS2 in Sichuan Province, China, appeared to be caused by more invasive deep-tissue infection with STSS, characterized by acute high fever, vascular collapse, hypotension, shock, and multiple organ failure.

Tonsillar and nasal swabs were collected from weanling pigs in 50 representative Ontario swine herds and tested for the presence of 5 important bacterial upper respiratory tract pathogens. All but 1 herd (2%) tested positive for Streptococcus suis by polymerase chain reaction (PCR); 48% of herds were S. suis serovar 2, 1/2 positive. In all but 2 herds there was evidence of Haemophilus parasuis infection. In contrast, toxigenic strains of Pasteurella multocida were detected by a P. multocida--enzyme-linked immunosorbant assay (PMT-ELISA) in only one herd. Seventy-eight percent of the herds were

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus suis (S. suis) infections are responsible for a large disease burden in piglets during the nursery phase, compromising animal welfare and increasing antibiotic use. The immune gap caused by decreased maternal-derived antibodies (MDA) and insufficient levels or functionality of acquired antibodies in weaned pigs could play a role in the increased susceptibility to S. suis infections. To better understand this, two studies were performed. Study I evaluated the associations between sow antibodies in colostrum and serum, birth parameters (e.g., birth weight, colostrum int

The impact of S. suis on Swedish pig production has increased in recent years, and characterization of the strains present in the pig population is needed to aid in surveillance and prevention. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify and characterize differences in the genomes between Swedish S. suis isolates associated with disease and isolates from healthy animals. Isolates categorized as being pathogenic (n = 100) or non-pathogenic (n = 117) were whole-genome sequenced, serotyped in silico, and sequence-typed using traditional MLST and core-genome MLST, and a genome-wide associatio

Streptococcus suis is an emerging zoonotic pathogen that can cause fatal diseases such as meningitis and sepsis in pigs and human beings. The overuse of antibiotics is leading to an increased level of resistance in S. suis, and novel antimicrobial agents or anti-virulence agents for the treatment of infections caused by S. suis are urgently needed. In the present study, we investigated the antibacterial activity, mode of action and anti-virulence effects of floxuridine against S. suis. Floxuridine showed excessive antibacterial activity against S. suis both in vivo and in vitro; 4 × MIC of flo

A cluster of 18 inpatients and 21 outpatients with a major complaint of meningitis and a history of sharing traditional delicacies of raw pork and pig blood in a village festival led to the suspicion of Streptococcus suis (S. suis) meningitis in Sibang Kaja Village, Badung, Bali, Indonesia. We conducted an investigation and case finding to prevent human fatalities. Demography and laboratory examinations of the inpatients were recorded. Bacterial culture, identification, and sensitivity tests were conducted using a VITEK 2 Compact machine (Biomeriuex®) with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) or blood fr

Streptococcus suis (S. suis) is a zoonotic pathogen that causes pneumonia, sepsis, endocarditis, and meningitis. S. suis is primarily found in the upper respiratory tract of pigs. To our knowledge, the first case of S. suis infection has resulted in pneumonia in Indonesia. A 40-year-old woman suffered from shortness of breath last month. The complaint worsened one week ago. She also complained of a productive cough with thick white phlegm. She has a history of late-stage cervical cancer. The patient's vital signs were normal, except for tachypnea. Vesicular breath sounds, no wheezing, and coar

BACKGROUND: Streptoccocus suis (S.suis) infection is a neglected zoonosis disease in humans mainly affects men of working age. We estimated the health and economic burden of S.suis infection in Thailand in terms of years of life lost, quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) lost, and productivity-adjusted life years (PALYs) lost which is a novel measure that adjusts years of life lived for productivity loss attributable to disease.
METHODS: A decision-analytic Markov model was developed to simulate the impact of S. suis infection and its major complications: death, meningitis and infective endoca
