In vitro antimicrobial profile of Ureaplasma urealyticum from genital tract of childbearing-aged women in Northern and Southern Italy.

Ureaplasma urealyticum is an opportunistic pathogen during pregnancy and in newborns. Other clinical problems related to U. urealyticum infections are: no susceptibility to cell wall-active drugs, limits of antibiotic treatment in pregnancy, and spread of antimicrobial resistance. In addition, the results of antimicrobial susceptibility against U. urealyticum from various countries are few and controversial. The antimicrobial susceptibility of U. urealyticum, isolated from cervical swabs and collected from outpatient childbearing-aged women in Italy from 2009 to 2012, was performed against flu

Novel plasmid-borne multidrug resistance gene cluster including lsa(E) from a linezolid-resistant Enterococcus faecium isolate of swine origin.

A novel nonconjugative plasmid of 28,489 bp from a porcine linezolid-resistant Enterococcus faecium isolate was completely sequenced. This plasmid harbored a novel type of multiresistance gene cluster that comprised the resistance genes lnu(B), lsa(E), spw, aadE, aphA3, and two copies of erm(B), which account for resistance to macrolides, lincosamides, streptogramins, pleuromutilins, streptomycin, spectinomycin, and kanamycin/neomycin. Structural comparisons suggested that this plasmid might have developed from other enterococcal plasmids by insertion element (IS)-mediated interplasmid recombi

Epidemiology, pathogenicity and emerging resistances in Staphylococcus pasteuri: from mammals and lampreys, to man.

Staphylococcus pasteuri is a coagulase-negative, Gram positive organism which is emerging as an agent of nosocomial infections and a blood derivatives contaminant, though its role in causing human disease mostly remains controversial. Despite the paucity of isolates recovered, this bacterium has recently appeared to express resistance against several classes of antibiotic compounds, such as methicillin/oxacillin, macrolides, lincosamides, streptogramins, tetracyclines, chloramphenicol, streptomycin, fosfomycin, as well as quaternary ammonium compounds. Also, authors will discuss some essential

The role of glycopeptides in the treatment of intravascular catheter-related infections.

There is increasing concern over multiresistant staphylococcci in catheter-associated infections. Local infections due to coagulase-negative staphylococci are usually resolved by removal of the intravascular catheter. However, if the device should remain for a certain period of time, e.g. to complete a course of chemotherapy, the antibiotic lock technique with a glycopeptide should be considered. In case of septic embolism to the lung caused by a multiresistant Staphylococccus aureus or Enterococcus faecium, systemic therapy with glycopeptides, streptogramins or linezolid must be employed.

Quantifying Human Health Risks from Virginiamycin Use in Food Animals in China.

Virginiamycin (VM), a streptogramin antibiotic, has been used to promote healthy growth and treat illnesses in farm animals in the United States and other countries. The combination streptogramin Quinupristin-Dalfopristin (QD) was approved in the United States in 1999 for treating patients with vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VREF) infections. Many chickens and swine test positive for QD-resistant E. faecium, raising concerns that using VM in food animals might select for streptogramin-resistant strains of E. faecium that could compromise QD effectiveness in treating human VREF infe

Mobile lincosamide resistance genes in staphylococci.

Lincosamide resistance in staphylococci is based on the expression of a number of genes which specify three major resistance mechanisms: (i) enzymatic inactivation by lincosamide nucleotidyltransferases, (ii) ribosome protection by ABC-F proteins, and (iii) methylation of the ribosomal target sites in the 23S rRNA by Cfr or Erm methylases. So far, only two lnu genes, lnu(A) and lnu(B), which code for different types of lincosamide nucleotidyltransferases, have been found in staphylococci. The ABC-F proteins are encoded by genes of the vga, lsa and sal classes. The corresponding proteins exhibi

Mechanisms of resistance to antimicrobial drugs in pathogenic Gram-positive cocci.

Many species of Gram-positive cocci are pathogenic. The most important are staphylococci, streptococci, and enterococci. Widespread usage of antibiotics was the main cause for the appearance and spread of resistance to almost all antimicrobials. The occurrence, mechanisms, and genetic background of resistance to antimicrobial drugs other than beta-lactams and glycopeptides among pathogenic staphylococci, streptococci, and enterococci are discussed in the text. Well-established agents (such as macrolides, lincosamides, streptogramins, aminoglycosides, quinolones, mupirocin, chloramphenicol) as

Antibiotic resistance and population structure of Staphylococcus epidermidis from prosthetic joint infections in Sweden and France.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Staphylococcus epidermidis is a major cause of prosthetic joint infections (PJIs). Multidrug resistant (MDR), hospital-adapted clones constitute most cases globally, though regional differences in lineage dissemination likely exist. The aim was to explore the population structure of S. epidermidis from PJIs in Sweden and France, with a focus on the presence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). METHODS: This study included genome sequence data from 191 clinical S. epidermidis isolates collected from patients with PJI in central Sweden (2007-16; n = 138) and the Lyon re

Distribution of MecA and Erm Genes among Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus with Inducible Resistance to Clindamycin.

BACKGROUND: The emergence of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and its ability to confer cross-resistance to macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin B has complicated the treatment against it. Gene-based studies among phenotypic methicillin-resistant isolates with inducible resistance to clindamycin are less available in Nepal. This work was undertaken to detect the mecA and erm genes among such phenotypes isolated from clinical samples. METHODS: S. aureus isolated from different clinical samples was identified by standard microbiological procedures (Gram-staining, colony morphology, an

Inducible gene expression in mammalian cells and mice.

Inducible expression of desired transgenes in mammalian cells and animals is a current priority in basic and applied research, biopharmaceutical manufacturing, gene therapy, and tissue engineering, as well as in drug discovery. Among the most prominent human-compatible transgene control technologies are engineered promoter/transactivator configurations that adjust heterologous target gene transcription in response to clinically licensed antibiotics (tetracyclines, streptogramins, macrolides). In this chapter we provide a detailed case study on macrolide-inducible expression of the human model

Antibiotic resistance patterns of aerobic coryneforms and furazolidone-resistant Gram-positive cocci from the skin surface of the human axilla and fourth toe cleft.

Samples of skin surface bacteria from 28 healthy subjects plated directly on to selective and non-selective media revealed that the proportion of aerobic coryneforms and furazolidone-resistant Gram-positive cocci (FURECs) resistant to erythromycin was significantly greater in the fourth toe cleft than in the axilla (P < 0.05). There were more erythromycin-resistant bacteria than tetracycline-resistant bacteria at both sites (P = 0.001 for the toe cleft; P < 0.01 for the axilla). In total, 160 distinct isolates were obtained, of which 42 were FURECs and 118 were aerobic coryneforms. Of these, 1
