Effectiveness of acute transcranial direct current stimulation on non-motor and motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is an appropriate treatment for Parkinson's disease (PD). It offers promising results and is known to improve symptoms. Nevertheless, consistent parameters need to be established for research purposes. OBJECTIVE: To verify the effectiveness of acute tDCS on non-motor and motor symptoms in PD. METHODS: A double-blind, randomized and sham-controlled study, in which twenty individuals randomly underwent two (one real, one sham) stimulation sessions. The current was applied to the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) for 20 min at 2 mA

Selective, sustained, and shift in attention in patients with diagnoses of schizophrenia.

Attentional deficits are a prominent aspect of cognitive dysfunction in schizophrenia. The present study was designed to investigate attention deficit in a group of patients with diagnosis of schizophrenia. According to the segmental set theory suggested by Hogarty and Flesher, three aspects of attention problems, selective, sustained, and shift in attention, were studied. The 30 patients hospitalized on three psychiatric wards at Shiraz and Isfahan and 30 normal healthy subjects matched for age, sex, and years of education were administered a computerized Continuous Performance Test, Stroop C

Multisensory Stroop effects in emotional speech perception: Age-related changes and cognitive links.

Previous studies have produced inconsistent findings regarding whether age-related declines in emotion perception affect various verbal and nonverbal channels to the same extent and whether they are linked to cognitive ability. This study systematically explored age-related differences in multisensory emotional speech perception and their associations with overall cognitive functioning. Thirty-three older adults (22 females) and 32 young adults (22 females) completed two Stroop-like tests examining the perceptual salience of verbal semantics, vocal prosody, and facial expressions. The cross-ch

The interference effect of direct eye gaze in the Stroop paradigm.

Direct eye gaze is a salient social stimulus that may hinder concurrent task performance, even when presented with another prominent distracter, such as the incongruent word in the Stroop paradigm. Previous studies (Chevallier et al., 2013;Conty et al., 2010) reported a stronger Stroop effect when direct gaze (vs. closed eyes) was shown above the letter strings, though not all studies found this effect. We had two main goals. The first was to replicate the increased Stroop effect under direct eye gaze. The second was to test whether this effect is specific to another person's eyes (ostensive n

Poor Stroop performances in 15-year-old dyslexic teenagers.

The Stroop test enables interference between color naming and reading to be studied. Protopapas et al. (2007) reported more errors in an interference task and longer reaction times in 12.5-year-old dyslexics; also more Stroop interference with lower reading skills. The present study uses a version of the Stroop with four color cards and aims to test interference and flexibility in older dyslexic teenagers. The four cards are: color naming, reading, interference and flexibility. In the latter, subjects have to name the color of the word inhibiting reading except when the word is inside a box. T

Physical activity, mental stress, and short-term heart rate variability in patients with ischemic heart disease.

BACKGROUND: Among the general population, mental stress seems to depress heart rate variability (HRV), and physical activity level seems to be positively associated with HRV. However, the extent to which these relationships exist among patients with ischemic heart disease is not clear. Therefore, this study investigated the association between level of physical activity and HRV among patients with ischemic heart disease during conditions of paced breathing and the Stroop Color-Word Conflict Test (Stroop). METHODS: Forty-two patients with ischemic heart disease were assigned to groups based on

Callosal transfer in schizophrenia: too much or too little?

Evidence from diverse sources has pointed to an abnormality in callosal transfer in schizophrenia. To examine this further, a test was devised that measures Stroop interference and facilitation within and between the cerebral hemispheres. 46 heterogeneous schizophrenic patients were tested, and it was found that lateralized Stroop effects were equivalent in the left and right hemispheres and did not differ from normal or psychiatric (affective disorder) control Ss. In control Ss, Stroop effects that required interhemispheric transfer of coded information were reduced relative to those requirin

Potential impact of bifrontal transcranial random noise stimulation (tRNS) on the semantic Stroop effect and its resting-state EEG correlates.

OBJECTIVE: The Stroop effect performance reflects cognitive resistance to interference. We aimed to investigate the effect of a single transcranial random noise stimulation session (tRNS) applied over the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) on the semantic Stroop effect and its resting electroencephalography (EEG) correlates (β/α ratio). METHODS: In a randomized, double-blind study, healthy volunteers were allocated to receive either one session of active tRNS (n=8) or one session of sham tRNS (n=11). The anode pad was placed on the scalp over the right-DLPFC and the cathode pad was placed

Evaluation of cognitive disengagement syndrome in children with obsessive-compulsive disorder: Clinical implications.

Cognitive disengagement syndrome (CDS) has been found to be associated with internalizing symptoms. Yet, no study thus far has focused on whether there is an association between obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and CDS. The purpose of this study is to examine the symptom frequency and clinical implications of CDS in children with OCD. The study included sixty-one children with OCD and sixty-six typically developing children. Children were evaluated by a semi-constructed diagnosis interview, Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory, Barkley Child Attention Scale, and Stroop test. The frequency of elev

On the relationship between tinnitus distress, cognitive performance and aging.

In this study we analyzed psychometric data of 107 individuals who suffer from chronic subjective tinnitus. In particular, we elucidated the relationship between tinnitus-related distress, psychological comorbidities, age, and hearing, and the performance in cognitive concentration and interference tests. Previous research has provided first evidence that individuals with tinnitus may have deficits in cognitive tasks. The present study aimed at extending former research by investigating the relationship between tinnitus distress and cognition. Statistical analyses comprised correlation and reg

Cardiovascular Effects of Stress During Acutely Increased Free Fatty Acids in a Randomized, Double-Blind, Cross-Over Study in Humans.

Increased free fatty acids stimulate sympathetic nervous system activity, impair endothelium-dependent vasodilation, and increase regional blood flow. The aim of this study was to assess if fatty acids acutely elevated by infusion of intralipid/heparin affect cardiovascular reactivity employing two stressors eliciting either a cardiac (Stroop test) or vascular (Cold Face test) dominated pressor response. Two stress tasks were performed in 20 healthy subjects (10 women, 10 men) before and during a 180-min intralipid/heparin or saline infusion as placebo on alternate trial days in a randomized c
