We report an efficient photocatalytic protocol for the defluorocyanoalkylation and defluoroacylation of α-trifluoromethyl styrenes by utilizing oxime esters as radical donors, allowing for the preparation of diverse gem-difluoroalkenes. The treatment of α-trifluoromethyl styrenes with cyclobutanone oxime esters led to the formation of distal cyano group-anchored gem-difluoroalkenes. This work presents the synthesis of a Co(II) MOF, IITG-7, with a 5-(((1H-imidazole-2-yl)methyl)amino)isophthalic acid linker using a solvothermal method. The cross-coupling of epoxides with acyl chlorides or anhydrides by a nickel/titanocene dual catalytic system is established. A variety of synthetically useful β-hydroxy ketones were obtained in good to high yields by using modified pyridine-oxazoline ligand. The reaction proceeds via the cooperation of titanocene-catalyzed ring-opening of epoxides and nickel-catalyzed acylation of the benzylic radical intermediate.

Human amylin forms structurally heterogeneous amyloids that have been linked to type-2 diabetes. A patient with a significant history of substance abuse was exposed to styrene and other solvents in the workplace. He became acutely psychotic, experiencing visual hallucinations. The psychosis was controlled with neuroleptic medications and avoidance of solvent exposure, but he continued to show significant deficits in visual-spatial and memory abilities. These deficits cleared with time away from the workplace. The case is of interest in terms of neuropsychological sequelae of solvent exposure and potential interaction of solvents with alcohol and recreational drugs.
