Adolescent Attitudes, Peer Norms, and Teacher Corporal Punishment in Five Sub-Saharan African Countries.

PURPOSE: Corporal punishment by teachers remains one of the most pervasive forms of school-based violence in sub-Saharan Africa, undermining adolescent well-being and educational attainment despite statutory prohibitions. While most research has focused on prevalence, teacher behaviors, or household risk factors, little is known about how adolescents' own beliefs and peer normative environments shape their vulnerability to teacher violence. METHODS: This study analyzed nationally representative violence against children surveys from five countries: Eswatini (2021), Mozambique (2019), Kenya (2

Prevalence and Factors Associated with Anaemia Among Sub-Saharan African Adolescents: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Nutritional, Socio-Demographic, Environmental, and Infectious Factors.

Background/Objectives: Anaemia is a critical public health challenge in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), particularly among adolescents. The objective was to estimate the pooled prevalence of anaemia among adolescents in SSA and synthesise evidence on its nutritional and contextual determinants. Methods: A systematic search of databases including PubMed, CINAHL and Web of Science was conducted for studies published from January 2000 to October 2025. The methodological approach was guided by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Pooled prevalence e

Valvulopathies in sub-Saharan African children: patterns, humanitarian interventions and cardiac surgical problems.

Despite the high burden of rheumatic fever in sub-Saharan African, there is currently no sustained and comprehensive strategy to control the disease. Consequently in this area the number of patients affected by rheumatic valve disease (RVD), most with a surgical indication, is 10-20 fold higher than in industrialised countries and estimates indicate that more than 50% of African RVD patients will die before age 25. In this paper, we review clinical and management issues of RVD in children in sub-Saharan Africa. Severe heart failure and undergrowth are the prevalent presentation of the illness.

Coding, modifier, and regulatory effects shape circulating APOL1 levels.

APOL1 variants G1 and G2 are major genetic risk factors for chronic kidney disease in people with recent sub-Saharan African ancestry, yet the mechanisms linking genotype to disease remain poorly defined. Circulating APOL1 is likely to play a critical role, although how specific genotypes and regulatory variants influence circulating APOL1 levels is incompletely understood. We analysed Olink-measured APOL1 NPX (Normalized Protein eXpression) levels from 43 587 UK Biobank participants. Associations between APOL1 NPX and known genotypes were assessed in individuals with recent sub-Saharan Africa

AIDS and Africa. Introduction.

Sub-Saharan Africa is the epicenter of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, and in this issue of the Journal, seven authors discuss the moral, social and medical implications of having 70% of those stricken living in this area. Anton A. van Niekerk considers complexities of plague in this region (poverty, denial, poor leadership, illiteracy, women's vulnerability, and disenchantment of intimacy) and the importance of finding responses that empower its people. Solomon Benatar reinforces these issues, but also discusses the role of global politics in sub-Saharan Africa, especially discrimination, imperialism

Mapping the Evidence on Vitamin D, Vitamin B12, and Folate Deficiencies and Their Potential Impact on Treatment Outcomes in Patients With Cancer in Sub-Saharan Africa: Protocol for a Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Micronutrient deficiencies, particularly of vitamin D, vitamin B12, and folate, are increasingly recognized as important, yet underexplored contributors to adverse outcomes in oncology care. These micronutrients are essential for immune regulation, DNA synthesis and repair, cell proliferation, and metabolic homeostasis, all of which are frequently disrupted in patients with cancer. Deficiencies may arise due to cancer-related metabolic changes, malabsorption, anorexia, and treatment-related toxicities, potentially influencing therapeutic response, treatment tolerance, survival, and

The history of African trypanosomiasis.

The prehistory of African trypanosomiasis indicates that the disease may have been an important selective factor in the evolution of hominids. Ancient history and medieval history reveal that African trypanosomiasis affected the lives of people living in sub-Saharan African at all times. Modern history of African trypanosomiasis revolves around the identification of the causative agents and the mode of transmission of the infection, and the development of drugs for treatment and methods for control of the disease. From the recent history of sleeping sickness we can learn that the disease can b

Cholera outbreaks in sub-Saharan Africa during 2010-2019: a descriptive analysis.

BACKGROUND: Cholera remains a public health threat but is inequitably distributed across sub-Saharan Africa. Lack of standardized reporting and inconsistent outbreak definitions limit our understanding of cholera outbreak epidemiology. METHODS: From a database of cholera incidence and mortality, we extracted data from sub-Saharan Africa and reconstructed outbreaks of suspected cholera starting in January 2010 to December 2019 based on location-specific average weekly incidence rate thresholds. We then described the distribution of key outbreak metrics. RESULTS: We identified 999 suspected ch

African tick bite fever in elderly patients: 8 cases in French tourists returning from South Africa.

BACKGROUND: African tick-bite fever, a tickborne disease caused by Rickettsia africae, is endemic in rural areas of sub-Saharan Africa and in the French West Indies. Most cases reported in the literature occurred in middle-aged, otherwise-healthy persons and corresponded to benign diseases. The course of African tick bite fever in elderly people is less well documented. METHODS: The medical records of 8 elderly patients infected with R. africae during a trip to South Africa in 2005 are presented to summarize the epidemiologic, clinical, microbiological, treatment, and disease course character

Dietary intake and epigenetic aging in an African population: food groups, dietary patterns, and plant-based diets in the RODAM study.

BACKGROUND: Epigenetic age acceleration (EAA) is a biological marker of healthy longevity. While diet–EAA associations are documented in high-income countries, data from low- and middle-income populations—where diets can differ substantially—are unavailable. We examined associations between three complementary dietary components (specific food groups, dietary patterns, and plant-based food proportions) and EAA among Ghanaians across the nutrition transition (rural Ghana, urban Ghana, the Netherlands). METHODS: We analyzed cross-sectional data from 705 adults in the RODAM study (2019–2021). Die

Prevalence and associated factors of hypertension among adults in Sub-Saharan Africa: a systematic review and meta-analysis of community-based studies.

INTRODUCTION: Hypertension (HT) is a major global public health challenge, responsible for more than 10 million deaths annually. In sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), its prevalence is high and rising, driven by rapid urbanisation, nutritional transition, and increasing sedentary behaviour, while screening and control rates remain suboptimal. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to estimate the prevalence of HT among adults in SSA and identify its key associated factors. METHODS: The protocol was registered in PROSPERO (CRD420251021429) and conducted in accordance with PRISMA 2020. We include

Incidence, prevalence, burden, and disability rate of neural tube defects in sub-Saharan Africa, 1990-2021: understanding epidemiology.

OBJECTIVE: Neural tube defects (NTDs) represent a significant global concern, impacting an estimated 300,000 individuals each year. Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is considerably affected due to various biopsychosocial factors, dietary issues such as folic acid deficiency, and fumonisin-contaminated maize consumption, and sex-based disparities. This study sought to understand epidemiology and trends in NTD in SSA from 1990 to 2021. METHODS: The Global Burden of Disease database was utilized to obtain epidemiological data on the variables of interest, which included disability-adjusted life years (D

Prevalence and determinants of poor outcome in patients with chronic kidney disease in low-income countries in sub-Saharan Africa: a systematic review.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a significant health burden globally, associated with high healthcare costs and mortality rates. In Africa, the prevalence of CKD is estimated at around 10-15% in adults, with factors such as HIV, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease contributing to its prevalence. We performed a systematic review to evaluate the prevalence of chronic kidney disease in sub-Saharan Africa between 2018 and 2023. We searched Google Scholar, PubMed, and Cochrane Review from 2018 until 2023, and we included studies that looked at the prevalence of chronic kidne

Inflammation at the maternal-fetal interface: a perspective on interacting risk factors for preterm birth in sub-Saharan African women living with HIV.

Globally, approximately 10% of all babies are born prematurely. The vast majority of preterm births, defined as birth <37 weeks of gestation, occur in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) in Asia and Africa. Furthermore, premature birth has become the leading cause of death in infants under the age of 5 years. Thus, to improve maternal and infant health outcomes, better diagnostics and intervention strategies are urgently needed. However, the multifactorial etiology of preterm birth provides a major obstacle in achieving this goal. A common factor to many adverse birth outcomes, including

Prevalence of left ventricular systolic dysfunction in HIV-infected children from sub-saharan Africa: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Left ventricular systolic dysfunction (LVSD) is an emerging non-communicable complication among children living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa, where paediatric HIV burden remains high. However, reported prevalence varies widely across studies and treatment eras, reflecting differences in antiretroviral therapy (ART) exposure, disease severity, and diagnostic criteria. AIM: To estimate the prevalence of LVSD among children living with HIV in Sub-Saharan Africa and evaluate study-level factors associated with variability. METHODS: A sys
