Periodontal disease is a common infection-induced inflammatory disease among individuals suffering from diabetes mellitus. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of treatment of periodontal disease on the level of metabolic control of diabetes. A total of 113 Native Americans (81 females and 32 males) suffering from periodontal disease and non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) were randomized into 5 treatment groups. Periodontal treatment included ultrasonic scaling and curettage combined with one of the following antimicrobial regimens: 1) topical water and systemic dox

BACKGROUND: The aim of the present study was to compare the ability of the diode laser to detect residual calculus with that of an explorer.
METHODS: The root surface of 40 extracted human teeth, each partially covered with subgingival calculus, was instrumented with curets under simulated clinical conditions in a manikin. The samples were randomly assigned to two study groups. In group A, the root surface was treated with an explorer until it appeared free of mineralized deposits upon examination. The samples in group B were instrumented until the relative intensity of fluorescence as induce

The importance of adequate root surface instrumentation has received increasing emphasis. The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which root planning could produce surfaces free of stainable deposits. Initial laboratory investigations on extracted, periodontally involved roots demonstrated that after meticulous root preparation, totally non-stainable surfaces could be obtained. These surfaces were shown to consist of either thin cementum or dentine. The efficacy of instrumenting periodontally involved buccal root surfaces on the anterior teeth of 33 patients, undergoing routin

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to carry out a clinical evaluation of the treatment of invasive cervical resorption.
METHOD AND MATERIALS: Topical application of a 90% aqueous solution of trichloracetic acid, curettage, nonsurgical root canal treatment where necessary, and restoration with glass-ionomer cement were performed on 94 patients with a total of 101 affected teeth. A minimum of 3 years' follow-up was required, unless failure occurred before that time, in which case that treatment was included. Teeth were divided into four classes, depending on the extent of the resorptive p

Patients with severe immunosuppression as a consequence of infection by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are at risk for a number of severe periodontal diseases. HIV-associated gingivitis and HIV-associated periodontitis (HIV-P) are seen exclusively in HIV-infected persons. In some cases HIV-P may extend into adjacent soft tissue and bone, resulting in necrotizing stomatitis of periodontal origin. In addition, acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis has also been reported to have an increased prevalence in HIV-infected patients. The clinical and microbiologic features of HIV-associated gingi

AIM: This study aimed to make a comparison of two sampling strategies of subgingival plaque after combined mechanical-antibiotic periodontal therapy.
METHODS: Thirty patients (18 female) suffering from aggressive (n = 12) or generalised severe chronic (n = 18) periodontitis were included. Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans had been detected subgingivally in all prior to anti-infective therapy (AT) and combined mechanical-antibiotic AT had been rendered. After AT clinical examinations were performed and subgingival plaque was sampled from the same four sites as prior to AT (ASPRE) as well a

BACKGROUND: Various methods have been applied for the treatment of periimplantitis lesions. It has been reported that the procedures used have been effective in eliminating the inflammatory lesion but that re-osseointegration to the once-contaminated implant surface has been difficult or impossible to achieve.
PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to examine the use of carbon dioxide (CO2) laser in combination with hydrogen peroxide in the treatment of experimentally induced periimplantitis lesions.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three dental implants (ITI Dental Implant System, Straumann AG, Waldenbur

The basic treatment of chronic periodontitis is a mechanical debridement of periodontal pockets by scaling and root planing (S/RP) in combination with efficient plaque control. Locally delivered antiseptics (LDA) have been proposed to practitioners and, while subgingival irrigation of antiseptics is still used in clinical practice, the introduction in our therapy of a slow release and sub-gingival delivery of tetracycline has changed the rationale from a mechanical treatment towards a combined therapy for full mouth/sites disinfection. Various antibiotics, antiseptics and resorbable carriers a

BACKGROUND, AIMS: The purpose of the present case report was to present 2 ways of treating recession in a periodontal patient combined with regular pocket elimination surgery. The techniques used enabled the operator to reduce the number of surgical sessions and clinically evaluate the 3-year coverage of gingival recessions using a subpedicle connective tissue graft.
METHODS: Surgery consisted of pocket elimination procedures to treat adult periodontitis as a way to harvest connective tissue to be placed in the areas of recession. The grafted tissue was covered by the primary flap or left unc

The aim of the study was to evaluate the adjunctive effect of systemic tetracycline (250 mg qds for 14 days) in sequential root planing and surgical phases of treatment in a randomised, double-blind controlled trial. 38 patients who were under 26 years of age, in good general health and with localised (15 test/15 control) or generalised (4 test/4 control) early onset periodontitis completed the non-surgical phase. Data were analysed by ANOVA using baseline covariates and transformations where appropriate. Improvements in probing depth, probing attachment level and bleeding on probing were sign

Periradicular curettage is a part of the treatment procedure of periradicular surgery. Its main purpose is to remove pathological periradicular tissues for visibility and accessibility to facilitate the treatment of the apical root canal system, or sometimes for the removal of harmful foreign materials present in the periradicular area. Inflammatory periradicular lesions (granuloma and cysts) are the responses of the periradicular tissues to irritants from the root canal and not from the periradicular area unless medicaments and/or filling materials have been forced through the apical foramina

A retrospective longitudinal study was performed to assess the effectiveness of tetracycline therapy associated with root planing compared with root planing alone in patients affected by medium to severe periodontal disease. From an analysis of results it appeared that the combined therapy was generally more successful, even though statistical significance was only achieved in cases of healing angular bone lesions. In conclusion, larger studies should be carried out to contribute to broaden the spectrum of indications for the use of antibiotic therapy in periodontal disease in adults.

Treatment of multiple recession defects with the adjunct use of a connective tissue graft (CTG) represents a challenge when diagnosed in several teeth of the mouth. The amount of CTG harvested from the palate may not be adequate to address this condition. In such scenarios, alternative sources such as acellular dermal matrix (ADM) are preferred due to the unlimited availability. A case report is presented, dealing with the treatment of multiple gingival recessions affecting the majority of dentition using ADM, with a 6-month follow-up.

The present study was designed to investigate the effectiveness of different ultrasonic instruments on the root surface. Fourteen patients with 35 single root teeth designated for extraction were recruited to the present study. Teeth were assigned to four experimental groups: group 1, piezoelectric ultrasonic device; group 2, magnetostrictive ultrasonic device; group 3, hand instrumentation; and group 4, untreated teeth (control). After instrumentation, the teeth were extracted and the presence of residual deposits (roughness and root surfaces characteristics) were analyzed. The results showed

The design and development of a new fine fiberscope (1.0 mm outer diameter) is described, that includes an irrigation system for endoscopic use. This effectively allows visualisation of fields involved in periodontal disease. This fiberscope has been used in our clinic for seven years to diagnose and treat periapical and periodontal lesions through fistulae and periodontal pockets. The fiberscope has been applied to endodontic surgery for the inspection of root apices and the denuded root surfaces, in addition to the cut root face, rootend cavity and root-end filling after root-end resection.

New products and treatment modalities for the management of periodontal disease continue to offer the clinician a large number of choices, many of which involve antimicrobials. Specific pathogenic bacteria play a central role in the etiology and pathogenesis of destructive periodontal disease. Under suitable conditions, periodontal pathogens colonize the subgingival environment and are incorporated into a tenacious biofilm. Successful prevention and treatment of periodontitis is contingent upon effective control of the periodontopathic bacteria. This is accomplished by professional treatment o

This study evaluated the effect of periodontal therapy on clinical and microbiological parameters in 23 subjects with severe generalized early onset periodontitis. Therapy consisted of oral hygiene instruction and root planing and scaling, followed 3 months later by open flap debridement. Subjects were monitored for both clinical measures and levels of Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans and Porphyromas gingivalis as identified by indirect immunofluoresence. Clinical and microbiological evaluations were done at the start of the study, 3 months after the completion of root planing and scaling

Selected cases have been presented using different techniques to alter crestal levels. Self Regeneration or Autogenous bone grafts have been most successful in cases of three-wall and two-wall infrabony lesions. When a hemiseptal lesion occurs on the mesial of a tooth an uprighting procedure can be accomplished. When there is an adjacent tooth a forced eruption technique using orthodontic forces can be used. A surgical elevation technique has been presented which also has shown positive changes in bony topography.
