Malignant epithelioid angiomyolipoma of the submandibular gland: A case report.

An epithelioid angiomyolipoma (a perivascular epithelioid cell tumor) is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm with distinctive cellular morphology and nonspecific imaging appearances. Mostly reported perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) are benign; however, rarely, PEComas can be malignant with pulmonary, hepatic, nodal, and osseous metastases. We present a case of a 40-year-old man with malignant right submandibular salivary gland PEComa, metastasized to the bones, lungs, and liver. We are going to discuss the diagnosis and management options of the rare disease of metastatic PEComa of the s

Clinicopathological study of 229 cases of salivary gland tumors in Isfahan population.

BACKGROUND: Salivary gland tumors are relatively uncommon and they consist of 3-10% of head and neck neoplasms. Most of studies have shown geographic variation in the incidence and histopathologic types of salivary gland neoplasms. The aim of this study was to evaluate the salivary gland tumors in Isfahan for 10 years duration. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this epidemiological study, 229 medical records of patients with salivary gland neoplasms in Isfahan for 10 years duration (January 2001-December 2011) were reviewed. The clinical data and histopathological features were statistically analyzed

High-grade transformation in adenoid cystic carcinoma: Can it be diagnosed on cytology? A cytohistological correlation.

Adenoid cystic carcinomas (ADCC) are distinctive salivary gland neoplasms with characteristic histomorphology. The diagnosis of dedifferentiation/high-grade transformation (HGT) indicates poor prognosis and is most often made on histopathology. We present a case of ADCC arising from a minor salivary gland tumor exhibiting HGT, reaching up to the submandibular gland and having lymph node metastases, suspected on fine-needle aspiration cytology. The index case highlights the awareness of the entity of the HGT of salivary gland tumors and raises suspicion for cytological diagnosis.

Bilateral submandibular gland oncocytoma in a patient with multiple endocrine neoplasia 2B syndrome and neurofibromatosis type 1: an unusual case.

Oncocytomas are unusual neoplasms of the head and neck that occur mainly in the parotid gland. The authors report a case of bilateral submandibular gland oncocytoma in a patient with multiple endocrine neoplasia 2B syndrome and neurofibromatosis type 1. Histopathology of the resection specimens demonstrated lymphovascular invasion but no other aggressive features. This was a highly unusual feature in an otherwise rare benign tumour.

Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma of the salivary gland--a low grade malignant neoplasm? Report of two cases and review of the literature.

Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinomas (EMC) are rare neoplasms of the salivary gland with an incidence of less than 1% arising predominantly in the parotid gland. Although they are thought to be of low grade malignancy, fatal courses are described. We report a case of EMC of the parotid gland in a 58-year-old woman with an unfavorable course of this disease in long term follow-up. The malignant potential of this tumor is discussed. In addition, we include another case of EMC of the submandibular gland.

Küttner's tumour: a case report.

Küttner's tumour (chronic sclerosing sialadenitis) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the salivary glands. It is a totally benign lesion. However, because of its clinical features, the clinical diagnosis is often that of a salivary gland neoplasm. We present a case of unilateral Küttner's tumour in the left submandibular salivary gland and discuss clinical, imaging and histological features.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the parotid gland associated with salivary calculi: An unusual presentation.

Adenoid cystic carcinomas (ACC) of the head and neck are relatively rare tumors, consisting of approximately 10-15% of all salivary gland neoplasms. ACC, a slow-growing aggressive malignant tumor of salivary gland commonly seen in the submandibular, sublingual, minor salivary glands is seldom found in the parotid. Calculus, the common cause of salivary gland dysfunction is usually identified in submandibular salivary gland because of its duct anatomy and physiochemical characteristic serous secretion. We report an unusual case of co-existent presentation of ACC with salivary calculi in the par

Detection of C-KIT (CD117) molecule in benign and malignant salivary gland tumours.

C-KIT (CD117), a tyrosine kinase receptor, is involved in the growth and development of normal tissues and some types of neoplasms. In the present study we analysed the expression of this molecule in salivary gland tumours. Archival formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded sections of 40 benign and 57 malignant salivary gland tumours were retrieved and retrospectively studied immunohistochemically using a polyclonal C-KIT antibody in an Envision/HRP technique. In addition five samples of chronic submandibular sialadenitis, five normal minor salivary glands and parotid or submandibular gland tissue ad

Oncocytomas of the submandibular gland. A series of 22 cases and a review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Oncocytomas are benign salivary gland neoplasms that represent approximately 1.5% of all salivary gland tumors. Oncocytomas of the submandibular gland, however, are decidedly uncommon. METHODS: Twenty-two cases of submandibular gland oncocytomas from the files of the Oral and Otolaryngic Tumor Registries of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology were reviewed, and analysis of the histologic criteria, histochemical and immunohistochemical reactions, and ultrastructural and clinical follow-up data was performed. RESULTS: The patients included 11 females and 11 males, age 21-88 yea

The surgical management of a leiomyosarcoma of the submandibular gland in a 95-year-old patient.

Primary sarcomas of the major salivary glands are rare and appear to originate from undifferentiated pluripotential mesenchymal cells. They must be distinguished from malignant supporting tissue neoplasms that secondarily involve the glands by direct extension or metastasis. Multidisciplinary management of head and neck soft tissue sarcomas is still controversial. We report a case of leiomyosarcoma of the submandibular gland in a 95-year-old man who was treated with excision of the right submandibular gland, extended to the surrounding tissues, without neck dissection. The patient tolerated th

Robotic Management of Salivary Glands.

There are numerous salivary gland pathologies for which robotic surgery can provide benefit. This article reviews the primary indications for use of transoral robotic surgery for salivary gland neoplasms. It also discusses transoral and retroauricular robotic approaches for pathology of the submandibular gland and prestyloid parapharyngeal space. These approaches have the advantage of avoiding a visible scar and are additionally minimally invasive in other ways as well. Robotic surgery offers advantages in several different modules of salivary gland surgery, similar to those it offers for orop

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the submandibular gland after chemotherapy in a child.

Second malignant neoplasms (SMNs) have become a concern in survivors of childhood malignancy. Although there are many reports describing SMN in patients treated for childhood cancer, salivary gland tumors rarely appear in these reports. Radiotherapy is a well-known risk factor for the development of secondary salivary gland malignancies after the treatment of childhood cancer. However, it is not well known whether chemotherapy itself treatment increases the risk of salivary gland malignancies. We report a child case with mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the submandibular gland as a SMN after chemot

Two malignant salivary gland tumours of different type in one patient.

The synchronous or metachronous occurrence of two tumours of the salivary glands in one patient is rare. These are mainly benign and of the same histological type. Here we report a 56-year-old man who developed a mucoepidermoid tumour of the left parotid gland four years after diagnosis of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the right submandibular gland. This combination of neoplasms has not to our knowledge been reported before.

Preoperative evaluation and surgical planning of submandibular gland tumors.

BACKGROUND: Roughly half of submandibular gland neoplasms are malignant. Because preoperative information on the nature of these tumors remains limited, both preoperative evaluation and assessment of the extent of primary surgery warrant guidelines that are more accurate. METHODS: We evaluated the preoperative examinations and management of all submandibular gland neoplasms treated surgically at the Helsinki University Hospital between 2000 and 2010. RESULTS: Of the 83 tumors, 58 (70%) were benign and 25 (30%) were malignant. Of the benign tumors, 54 (93%) were pleomorphic adenomas. The cyto

Potential therapeutic effects of induced pluripotent stem cells on induced salivary gland cancer in experimental rats.

Salivary gland neoplasms exhibit complex histopathology in a variety of tumor types and treatment options depend largely on the stage of the cancer. Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS) have been investigated for treating induced salivary gland cancer and for restoring salivary gland function. We investigated iPS treatment for salivary gland cancer both in vitro and in vivo. For our study in vitro, we re-programmed human skin fibroblasts to form iPS cells using a plasmid containing Oct4, Sox2, L-MYC and LIN28. For our study in vivo, we used 30 white male albino rats divided into the following

Submandibular and sublingual salivary gland involvement in adenoid cystic carcinoma.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (AdCC) is a malignant salivary gland neoplasm that presents as an indolent but aggressive neoplasm. AdCC histogenesis is linked to the intercalated ducts of the salivary glands, equally affecting the major and minor glands. AdCC is associated with distant metastasis, most commonly to the lungs, and a high recurrence rate. AdCC accounts for 4.2% of all tumors. About 55% of all reported cases affect the submandibular gland, and around 50% of AdCC cases occur in the minor salivary glands. The present review describes a case of AdCC which presented a single nodular swellin

An analysis of salivary gland neoplasms: a 12-year, single-institution experience in Turkey.

The epidemiology of salivary gland tumors worldwide is not very well defined. Although many studies on this subject have been undertaken, the data are generally focused on specific topics such as parotid gland neoplasms or tumors of the major salivary glands. We conducted a study to establish the prevalence and distribution of benign and malignant neoplasms of both the major and minor salivary glands at a single institution. We reviewed 244,204 cases that had come through our pathology department from January 1994 through December 2005 and found 235 cases of a salivary gland neoplasm (0.09%).

Large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the submandibular gland: a case report and literature review.

Neuroendocrine tumors (NET) are a heterogeneous group of malignancies with a broad spectrum of histomorphologies, tissue origins, and clinical outcomes, which arise from neural crest cells with neuroendocrine differentiation. Salivary gland tumors account for 3-6% of all head and neck neoplasms, while large cell neuroendocrine carcinomas (LCNEC) of the salivary gland are extremely rare, with few cases reported in literature, and only 5 cases involving submandibular gland. The rarity of these tumors in salivary glands is probably related to the scarcity of neuroendocrine cells in this tissue, w
