BACKGROUND: Cancer patients often face multiple comorbidities and are at risk for various mental health conditions and substance use disorders. Tobacco/nicotine dependence (TND) is a known risk factor for poor health outcomes and has been associated with psychiatric disorders including substance use disorder. However, the specific relationship between TND and the risk of substance use disorder and mental health conditions among cancer patients remains underexplored. This study aimed to assess the association between TND and the risk of comorbid conditions among cancer patients.

OBJECTIVE: To discuss the role of substance-related and addictive disorders (SRAD) that lead patients with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) to suicide and homicide.
METHOD: Relevant articles were searched via PubMed using several keywords related to this issue. Most of the articles included in this review were published after 2000.
RESULTS: Patients with ADHD often fall into crises of catastrophic life events such as suicide or homicide. SRAD play an important role in leading ADHD patients to such events. Because ADHD is characterized by inattentiveness and impulsivity, any ki

OBJECTIVES: Lifetime co-occurring substance use disorders are common at the time of presentation for the treatment of primary psychosis. Our aim was to investigate the clinical characteristics of adolescents with early-onset schizophrenia/schizoaffective disorder (EOS), categorized as either with (EOS + SUD) or without SUD (non-SUD/EOS), in a multi-center sample.
METHODS: Between 2016 and 2022, 255 patients were evaluated across three tertiary-care inpatient units. Diagnoses were confirmed by the treating physician according to the DSM-5 during the hospital stay. The severity of symptoms was

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Population and aging are major contributing factors influencing the increase in substance use disorder (SUD), which in itself affects mental health, particularly anxiety and depression. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and pharmacotherapy co-treatment are considered the gold standard for the treatment of SUD. Thus, the present study has been carried out to investigate the efficacy of brief CBT on the general health of opioid users.
METHODS: A randomized controlled trial (RCT) was conducted with forty opioid users whose addiction was dully confirmed by a psychiatrist

BACKGROUND: Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is an important element of patient care and clinical research. The aim of this study was to describe HRQoL changes and identify associated factors during a 6-month follow-up of outpatients starting care for alcohol or opioid dependence.
METHODS: HRQoL was measured at baseline and 3 and 6 months later using the SF-12. Data on the patients' sociodemographics, clinical characteristics and levels of anxiety and depression were collected using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Repeated-measures analyses were performed to assess fac

PURPOSE: Adolescence is a prime developmental stage for early tobacco cessation (TC) intervention. This study examined substance use disorder counselors' reports of the availability and implementation of TC services (behavioral treatments and pharmacotherapies) in their treatment programs and the relationship between their tobacco-related knowledge and implementation of TC services.
METHODS: Survey data were collected in 2012 from 63 counselors working in 22 adolescent-only treatment programs. Measures included 15 TC behavioral treatments, nine TC pharmacotherapies, and three tobacco-related

BACKGROUND: Substance use disorder (SUD) is a debilitating neuropsychiatric condition characterized by persistent compulsive drug use and associated cognitive and psychiatric impairments. Emerging evidence suggests that neuroinflammatory pathways contribute to the pathophysiology of SUD. However, the relationships between neuroinflammatory-related biomarkers and psychiatric symptomatology in SUD remain poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate neuroinflammatory-related biomarkers and their association with psychiatric symptom changes in individuals with SUD.
METHODS: Participants wit

OBJECTIVE: Black, Asian, and Hispanic/Latino people are disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and were more likely to experience coronavirus-related racial discrimination. This study examined the association between pandemic-related stressors, including employment and housing disruptions, coronavirus-related victimization distress, and perceptions of pandemic-associated increase in societal racial biases, and substance use disorder (SUD) risk among Asian, Black, Hispanic/Latino, and non-Hispanic White adults in the U.S.

BACKGROUND: Implicit cognition has been linked to relapse in substance use disorder (SUD). Studies on attentional bias have found different outcomes related to the therapeutic context, finding an association with relapse in inpatients but not in outpatients. There are no similar studies that use associations in semantic memory as a measure of implicit cognition.
OBJECTIVES: (i) to analyze the relationship between a measure of associations in semantic memory and relapse in inpatients and outpatients; (ii) to compare the evolution of these associations between inpatients and outpatients after 3

This prospective study tested whether early menarche partially accounts for the increases in depression, eating pathology, substance abuse, and comorbid psychopathology that occur among adolescent girls, with structured interview data from a community sample (N = 496). Early menarche (prior to 11.6 years) was associated with elevated depression, substance abuse, and "any" disorder but did not confer increased risk for anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or binge eating disorder. Although there was significant comorbidity across all three classes of pathology, early menarche was associated only

American Indians appear to experience a higher rate of traumatic events than what has been reported in general population surveys. American Indians also suffer higher alcohol related death rates than any other ethnic group in the U.S. population. Therefore efforts to delineate factors which may uniquely contribute to increased likelihood of trauma, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and substance use disorders (SUD) over the lifetime in American Indians are important because of the high burden of morbidity and mortality that they pose to American Indian communities. Participants were Ameri

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The association between substance use disorders (SUDs) and mental illness (MI) has been well established. Previous studies reporting this association in various clinical populations have not taken into account former substance use. This may be important as increased prevalence of substance use among individuals with MI may partially explain the strong association between SUDs and MI.
METHODS: In this study we included only individuals with previous substance use and explored the association between lifetime diagnosis of MI and transition from substance use to SUDs.

OBJECTIVE: This meta-analysis identified the effects of EMDR on both addiction-related symptoms (e.g., craving, addiction severity) and comorbid emotional symptoms (e.g., posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety), and the influence of moderator variables across these symptom domains in substance use disorders (SUDs).
METHODS: We systematically searched the literature published up to June 2025 through major databases including Cochrane, PubMed, Embase, and PsycINFO. A total of 14 studies were included in the final analysis, including randomized controlled trials (RCTs), random

BACKGROUND: A sizeable literature highlighted that negative affectivity and craving are both known to be implicated in relapses.
OBJECTIVES: The present study synthetized the existing litterature to determine strength of the interaction between negative affectivity and craving for substance-related disorders including illicit drugs, alcohol and tobacco.
METHODS: We conducted a systematic review in accordance with PRISMA guidelines followed by a meta-analysis. Online computer databases PubMed, PsycINFO and Web of Science were searched systematically and thoroughly. Jamovi 1.8.1 Current versio

BACKGROUND: Causes of the comorbidity of substance misuse with anxiety-related and depressive disorders (anxiety/depression) remain poorly known. We estimated associations of substance misuse and anxiety/depression in the general population and tested them while accounting for genetic and shared environmental factors.
METHODS: We studied individuals born in Sweden 1968-1997 (n = 2 996 398) with follow-up in nationwide register data for 1997-2013. To account for familial effects, stratified analyses were conducted within siblings and twin pairs. Substance misuse was defined as ICD-10 alcohol o

A history of sexual violence has been related to more complex treatment needs in patients with substance use disorders (SUD). Most of the existing studies, however, included patients with various types of SUD, did not examine gender differences and focused on a small range of clinical domains. Our sample consisted of opioid-dependent outpatients treated during a three-year period in a German metropolitan region. The analysis was based on a local case register and included all patients for whom information on lifetime sexual violence was available (N=3531; 68.3% males). In a case-control design

These practice guidelines for the biological treatment of substance use disorders were developed by an international Task Force of the World Federation of Societies of Biological Psychiatry (WFSBP). The goal during the development of these guidelines was to review systematically all available evidence pertaining to the treatment of substance use disorders, and to reach a consensus on a series of practice recommendations that are clinically and scientifically meaningful based on the available evidence. These guidelines are intended for use by physicians evaluating and treating people with subst
