Sulfur trioxide (SO3) is an unstable pollutant, and its removal from the gas phase of industrial flue gas remains a significant challenge. Herein, we propose a reverse conversion treatment (RCT) strategy to reduce S(VI) in SO3 to S(IV) by combining bench-scale experiments and theoretical studies. We first demonstrated that metastable sulfides can break the S-O bond in SO3, leading to the re-formation of sulfur dioxide (SO2). The RCT performance varied between mono- and binary-metal sulfides, and metastable CuS had a high SO3 conversion efficiency in the temperature range of 200-300 °C. Accordi

In the late 1970s, sulfane sulfur was defined as sulfur atoms covalently bound only to sulfur atoms. However, this definition was not generally accepted, as it was slightly vague and difficult to comprehend. Thus, in the early 1990s, it was defined as "bound sulfur," which easily converts to hydrogen sulfide upon reduction with a thiol-reducing agent. H2S-related bound sulfur species include persulfides (R-SSH), polysulfides (H2Sn, n ≥ 2 or R-S(S)nS-R, n ≥ 1), and protein-bound elemental sulfur (S0). Many of the biological effects currently associated with H2S may be attributed to persulfides

Oxidation of sulfide to sulfate is known to consist of several steps. Key intermediates in this process are the so-called small oxoacids of sulfur (SOS)-sulfenic HSOH (hydrogen thioperoxide, oxadisulfane, or sulfur hydride hydroxide) and sulfoxylic S(OH)2 acids. Sulfur monoxide can be considered as a dehydrated form of sulfoxylic acid. Although all of these species play an important role in atmospheric chemistry and in organic synthesis, and are also invoked in biochemical processes, they are quite unstable compounds so much so that their physical and chemical properties are still subject to i

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Homocystinurias are rare genetic defects characterized by altered fluxes of sulfur compounds including homocysteine and cysteine. We explored whether the severely perturbed sulfur amino acid metabolism in patients with homocystinurias affects the metabolism of hydrogen sulfide.
EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: We studied 10 treated patients with a block in the conversion of homocysteine to cysteine due to cystathionine β-synthase deficiency (CBSD) and six treated patients with remethylation defects (RMD) and an enhanced flux of sulfur metabolites via transsulfuration. Control gr

In this review, we focus on the activities transpiring in the anaerobic segment of the sulfur cycle occurring in the gut environment where hydrogen sulfide is produced. While sulfate-reducing bacteria are considered as the principal agents for hydrogen sulfide production, the enzymatic desulfhydration of cysteine by heterotrophic bacteria also contributes to production of hydrogen sulfide. For sulfate-reducing bacteria respiration, molecular hydrogen and lactate are suitable as electron donors while sulfate functions as the terminal electron acceptor. Dietary components provide fiber and macro

The molecular mode(s)-of-action of the toxic metal chromium has yet to be fully resolved. This Mini review focuses on interactions between chromate and sulfur in biological systems. Cr binds sulfur ligands, with cysteine and glutathione having the capacity to aggravate or ameliorate Cr toxicity. Competition between chromate and sulfate for uptake and in metabolism provokes sulfur starvation, which can be growth limiting. Recent data indicate that sulfur deficiency determines protein damage-related Cr toxicity, due to mRNA mistranslation caused by Cr-induced S limitation. Sulfur deprivation cou

Scabies outbreaks occurred in two large orphanages in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Since we were concerned about the availability, safety, and cost of scabicides in Thailand, sulfur in petrolatum was our choice for mass treatment of the children. We studied the efficacy of sulfur in children 2 months to 6 years of age. After the treatment, 47% and 71% of the 102 patients were cured in 2 weeks and 4 weeks, respectively. Only three preschool children developed a mild facial irritation after the first application. This agent is a safe and cheap choice for mass therapy.

This review deals with the toxicology of sulfur in ruminants including toxicity, neurotoxic effects, and mechanism of toxic action of hydrogen sulfide, clinical signs, and treatment. It will report effects of excessive intake of sulfur by ruminants on feed intake, animal performance, ruminal digestion and motility, rumination, and other physiological functions. Poisoning of animals with sulfur from industrial emissions (sulfur dioxide) also is discussed. Excessive quantities of dietary sulfur (above .3 to .4%) as sulfate or elemental sulfur may cause toxic effects and in extreme cases can be f

Seven North American moss species responded differentially to fumigations with sulfur dioxide ranging from 0.5 to 4.0 ppm. Leucobryum glaucum and Dicranum scoparium were the most sensitive species; Dicranella heterophylla, Polytrichum ohioense and Pottia truncata, the most resistant. The results of fumigations with 0.1 to 4.0 ppm sulfur dioxide for 8 hours on cultured gametophytes of Polytrichum ohioense indicate that protonema and young gametophores are substantially more sensitive to sulfur dioxide than mature gametophores. Protonema were killed at concentrations of 0.2 ppm sulfur dioxide; w

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a toxic and corrosive contaminant in industrial gas streams, and its removal typically relies on single-use adsorbents that generate significant waste. Here, we report a regenerable zinc-modified Linde Type A (LTA) zeolite that captures sulfur from H2S at elevated temperature and can be repeatedly cycled without structural degradation. Zinc was incorporated into commercial Ca-LTA beads via ion exchange, yielding Zn-LTA materials that retain high surface area, crystallinity, and pore accessibility. Exposure to H2S at 400 °C resulted in rapid sulfur uptake (∼80 mg S g-1

In this paper, through the establishment of a blockage analysis process, multistage weight loss method, and FT-IR, GC-MS, SEM, EDS, XRD and other characterization test means, it is clear that the scale sample is mainly organic material covered with complex and diverse sulfur and iron compounds, and the mechanism of sulfur-containing gas well blockage is revealed by tracing into the well material, formation minerals, acid gas corrosion, and other substances. Through the selection of chelating agent, cleaning agent, and acid concentration, as well as the optimization of different process paramet

SO(2) reduction by CO over SnO(2) catalyst was studied in this work. The parameters were the reaction temperature, space velocity (GHSV) and [CO]/[SO(2)] molar ratio. The optimal temperature, GHSV and [CO]/[SO(2)] molar ratio were 550 degrees C, 8000 h(-1) and 2.0, respectively. Under these conditions, the SO(2) conversion and sulfur selectivity were about 78% and 68%, respectively. The following reaction pathway involving two mechanisms was proposed in SO(2) reduction by CO over SnO(2) catalyst: in the first step involving Redox mechanism, the elemental sulfur was produced by the mobility of

Eight atopic adolescent subjects without diagnosis of clinical asthma but with signs of hyperactive airways were studied. The subjects were exposed for 30 min at rest followed by 10 min during moderate exercise on a treadmill to the following: (1) filtered air, (2) 1 mg/m3 NaCl droplet aerosol, (3) 1 ppm SO2 and NaCl droplet aerosol, or (4) 1 ppm SO2. All exposures were at 75% relative humidity and 22 degrees C. Exposures to either SO2 mode produced statistically significant changes in pulmonary function, whereas sham exposures to air on NaCl did not. These results are similar to those seen ea

Sulfur (S) is an essential plant nutrient, but ongoing decreases in inorganic S inputs to soil continue to reduce S availability in agricultural soils globally. This study investigated long-term trends in soil S speciation after land use change and the application of different soil amendments using the world's longest-running agricultural experiments at the Rothamsted Research Centre, UK. Soil samples spanning 145 years were obtained from the Broadbalk Wheat Experiment (continuous cropping with different amendments) and two Wilderness sites, Broadbalk Wilderness and Geescroft Wilderness (cropp

A novel soluble copolymer poly(S-MVT) was synthesized using a relatively quick one-pot solvent-free method, inverse vulcanization. Both of the two raw materials are sustainable, i.e., elemental sulfur is a by-product of the petroleum industry and 4-Methyl-5-vinylthiazole (MVT) is a natural monoene compound. The microstructure of poly(S-MVT) was characterized by FT-IR, 1H NMR, XPS spectroscopy, XRD, DSC SEM, and TEM. Test results indicated that the copolymers possess protonated thiazole nitrogen atoms, meso/macroporous structure, and solubility in tetrahydrofuran and chloroform. Moreover, the i

Catalase is well-known as an antioxidant dismutating H2O2 to O2 and H2O. However, catalases evolved when metabolism was largely sulfur-based, long before O2 and reactive oxygen species (ROS) became abundant, suggesting catalase metabolizes reactive sulfide species (RSS). Here we examine catalase metabolism of H2Sn, the sulfur analog of H2O2, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and other sulfur-bearing molecules using H2S-specific amperometric electrodes and fluorophores to measure polysulfides (H2Sn; SSP4) and ROS (dichlorofluorescein, DCF). Catalase eliminated H2Sn, but did not anaerobically generate H2S,
