Reaction Mechanism for m-Xylene Oxidation in the Claus Process by Sulfur Dioxide.

In the Claus process, the presence of aromatic contaminants such benzene, toluene, and xylenes (BTX), in the H2S feed stream has a detrimental effect on catalytic reactors, where BTX form soot particles and clog and deactivate the catalysts. Among BTX, xylenes are proven to be most damaging contaminant for catalysts. BTX oxidation in the Claus furnace, before they enter catalyst beds, provides a solution to this problem. A reaction kinetics study on m-xylene oxidation by SO2, an oxidant present in Claus furnace, is presented. The density functional theory is used to study the formation of m-xy

[Oxidation of sulfur-containing substrates by aboriginal and experimentally designed microbial communities].

Aboriginal and experimental (constructed of pure microbial cultures) communities of acidophilic chemolithotrophs have been studied. The oxidation of elemental sulfur, sodium thiosulfate, and potassium tetrathionate as sole sources of energy has been monitored. The oxidation rate of the experimental community is higher as compared to the aboriginal community isolated from a flotation concentrate of pyrrhotine-containing pyrite-arsenopyrite gold-arsenic sulfide ore. The degree of oxidation of the mentioned S substrates amounts to 17.91, 68.30, and 93.94% for the experimental microbial community

Enumeration of sulfur-oxidizing microorganisms on deteriorating stone of the angkor monuments, Cambodia.

Annual change in the density of sulfur-oxidizing microorganisms on sandstone was enumerated to know the effects on the deterioration of stone materials of the Angkor monuments in Cambodia. Samples were obtained from total 12 stations at the Angkor Wat, Bayon, and Phnom Krom temples between 1998 and 2007. Sulfur-oxidizing microorganisms enumerated in a mineral salts medium supplemented with elemental sulfur as the sole energy source had a density of 10(1)-10(5) MPN (g sample)(-1). The sulfur-oxidizing microorganisms of the samples collected at Angkor Wat have tended to decrease in density since

The role of oxidative stress in bronchoconstriction due to occupational sulfur dioxide exposure.

BACKGROUND: We previously showed that apricot sulfurization workers (ASW) are exposed to high concentrations of SO(2), resulting in an asthma-like syndrome. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether oxidative stress plays a role in the pathogenesis of asthma-like syndrome due to the high concentrations of SO(2) exposure in agricultural environment. METHODS: Serum antioxidant enzyme activities and malondialdehyde (MDA) concentrations, which are markers of lipid peroxidation, and pulmonary function tests (PFT) were measured in 40 volunteer ASW and compared to 20 healthy control subjects. Effect of mixing conditions on irritant potency of zinc oxide and sulfur dioxide.

Measurement of mechanics of respiration in guinea pigs was used to assess the irritant potency of zinc oxide and sulfur dioxide mixed under different conditions of temperature and humidity. Concentrations were 1-2 mg/m3 zinc oxide and 1 ppm sulfur dioxide. Dry conditions of mixing (Chamber RH 30%) either at 24 degrees C in the exposure chamber or at 480 degrees C in a dry furnace gave a biological response which could be completely accounted for by responses to zinc oxide and/or sulfur dioxide alone. Chemical examination of the aerosols did not indicate the formation of particulate sulfur spec

Iron (Hydr)oxides Suppress Dissolved Organic Sulfur Synthesis in Acid Mine Drainage Environments by Inhibiting Organic Carbon Degradation and Assimilatory Sulfate Reduction.

Dissolved organic sulfur (DOS) in acid mine drainage (AMD) has attracted widespread attention due to its potential metal-complexation capacity. Given the little knowledge about DOS in AMD environments, this study employs high-resolution mass spectrometry and metagenomics to investigate its occurrence, synthesis pathways, and influencing factors. The results indicate that DOS exists at a mass spectrometry intensity-weighted relative abundance of 15.8-36.0% in AMD environments, mainly in CHOS and CHONS forms, with both levels higher than those found in soil, marine, and groundwater environments.

Low temperature performance and sulfur resistance enhancement of Mn-Ce oxides supported on W-modified MWCNT for NH3-SCR removal of NOx.

To eliminate nitrogen oxides (NOx), composite carrier-supported catalysts (Mn-Ce/MWCNT-W) and traditional catalysts (Mn-Ce/MWCNT and W-Mn-Ce/MWCNT) were prepared using an ultrasonic impregnation method that preformed low-temperature ammonia-selective catalytic reduction (SCR) removal of NOx. The promotion effects of MWCNT-W composite carriers for low temperature SCR activities and SO2 tolerance of the catalysts were systematically investigated. Compared to traditional catalyst, Mn-Ce/MWCNT-W catalyst, with a 30% WOx/MWCNT mass ratio, demonstrated improved SCR activity and high N2-selectivity f

Effects of plant additives on the concentration of sulfur and nitrogen oxides in the combustion products of coal-water slurries containing petrochemicals.

The active use of solid fossil fuels (coal) in the production of heat and electricity has led to significant pollution, climate change, environmental degradation, and an increase in morbidity and mortality. Many countries (in particular, European ones, China, Japan, the USA, Canada, etc.) have launched programs for using plant and agricultural raw materials to produce heat and electricity by burning them instead of or together with traditional fuels. It is a promising solution to produce slurry fuels, based on a mixture of coal processing, oil refining and agricultural waste. This paper presen

Oxidative Stress: An Intersection Between Radiation and Sulfur Mustard Lung Injury.

Nuclear and chemical weapons of mass destruction share both a tragic and beneficial legacy in mankind's history and health. The horrific health effects of ionizing radiation and mustard gas exposures unleashed during disasters, wars, and conflicts have been harnessed to treat human health maladies. Both agents of destruction have been transformed into therapies to treat a wide range of cancers. The discovery of therapeutic uses of radiation and sulfur mustard was largely due to observations by clinicians treating victims of radiation and sulfur mustard gas exposures. Clinicians identified vuln

Evaluation of joint toxicity of BTEX mixtures using sulfur-oxidizing bacteria.

Benzene (B), toluene (T), ethylbenzene (E), and xylenes (X) are petrochemicals vital in various industrial and commercial processing but identified as priority pollutants due to their high toxicity. The objective of this study was to investigate the toxicological nature of BTEX mixtures under controlled laboratory aquatic conditions using sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (SOB). Results from individual BTEX tests demonstrated that the order of toxicity among BTEX was X ≥ E > T > B. Comparisons of dose-effect curves for BTEX suggest that the biochemical mode of action of B in SOB was different from tho

Sulfur-driven methylmercury production in paddies continues following soil oxidation.

Methylmercury (MeHg) production in paddy soils and its accumulation in rice raise global concerns since rice consumption has been identified as an important pathway of human exposure to MeHg. Sulfur (S) amendment via fertilization has been reported to facilitate Hg methylation in paddy soils under anaerobic conditions, while the dynamic of S-amendment induced MeHg production in soils with increasing redox potential remains unclear. This critical gap hinders a comprehensive understanding of Hg biogeochemistry in rice paddy system which is characterized by the fluctuation of redox potential. Her

Fighting Oxidative Stress with Sulfur: Hydrogen Sulfide in the Renal and Cardiovascular Systems.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is an essential gaseous signaling molecule. Research on its role in physiological and pathophysiological processes has greatly expanded. Endogenous enzymatic production through the transsulfuration and cysteine catabolism pathways can occur in the kidneys and blood vessels. Furthermore, non-enzymatic pathways are present throughout the body. In the renal and cardiovascular system, H2S plays an important role in maintaining the redox status at safe levels by promoting scavenging of reactive oxygen species (ROS). H2S also modifies cysteine residues on key signaling molecul

Fast oxidation of sulfur dioxide by hydrogen peroxide in deliquesced aerosol particles.

Atmospheric sulfate aerosols have important impacts on air quality, climate, and human and ecosystem health. However, current air-quality models generally underestimate the rate of conversion of sulfur dioxide (SO2) to sulfate during severe haze pollution events, indicating that our understanding of sulfate formation chemistry is incomplete. This may arise because the air-quality models rely upon kinetics studies of SO2 oxidation conducted in dilute aqueous solutions, and not at the high solute strengths of atmospheric aerosol particles. Here, we utilize an aerosol flow reactor to perform dire

Graphene Oxide Hybrid with Sulfur-Nitrogen Polymer for High-Performance Pseudocapacitors.

Toward the introduction of fast faradaic pseudocapacitive behavior and the increase of the specific capacitance of carbon-based electrodes, we covalently functionalized graphene oxide with a redox active thiourea-formaldehyde polymer, yielding a multifunctional hybrid system. The multiscale physical and chemical characterization of the novel 3-dimensional hybrid revealed high material porosity with high specific surface area (402 m2 g-1) and homogeneous element distribution. The presence of multiple functional groups comprising sulfur, nitrogen, and oxygen provide additional contribution of Fa

Are there multiple mechanisms of anaerobic sulfur oxidation with ferric iron in Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans?

To clarify the pathway of anaerobic sulfur oxidation coupled with dissimilatory ferric iron reduction in Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans strain CCM 4253 cells, we monitored their energy metabolism gene transcript profiles. Several genes encoding electron transporters involved in aerobic iron and sulfur respiration were induced during anaerobic growth of ferrous iron-grown cells. Most sulfur metabolism genes were either expressed at the basal level or their expression declined. However, transcript levels of genes assumed to be responsible for processing of elemental sulfur and other sulfur inter

Sulfur-containing compounds in protecting against oxidant-mediated lung diseases.

Over 95% of the oxygen we metabolize undergoes a four-electron reduction to produce two molecules of water. Whenever electrons escape from the mitochondrial electron-transport chain and pass directly onto oxygen, oxidants that can cause cytotoxicity are generated. The lung being constantly exposed to atmospheric oxygen is more susceptible to oxidant-induced cellular damage. For instance, increased generation of oxidants is implicated in many pulmonary pathological conditions including emphysema, adult respiratory distress syndrome, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and asthma. Sulfur is an essenti

Zinc-aluminum layered double hydroxide and double oxide for room-temperature oxidation of sulfur dioxide gas.

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) gas at trace levels challenges the consumption of fuel gases and cleaning of flue gases originating from diverse anthropogenic sources. We have demonstrated Zn-Al layered double hydroxide (LDH) and layered double oxide (LDO) as low-cost and effective adsorbents in removing lowly concentrated SO2 gas at room temperature. Water in the adsorbent bed significantly improved the performance, where the maximum adsorption capacity of 38.0 mg g-1 was achieved for LDO. Based on the spectroscopic findings, the adsorbed gas molecules were oxidized to surface-bound sulfate/bisulfate sp

Involvement of sulfide:quinone oxidoreductase in sulfur oxidation of an acidophilic iron-oxidizing bacterium, Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans NASF-1.

The effects of cyanide, azide, and 2-n-Heptyl-4-hydroxy-quinoline-N-oxide (HQNO) on the oxidation of ferrous ion or elemental sulfur with Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans NASF-1 cells grown in iron- or sulfur-medium were examined. The iron oxidation of both iron- and sulfur-grown cells was strongly inhibited by cyanide and azide, but not by HQNO. Sulfur oxidation was relatively resistant to cyanide and azide, and inhibited by HQNO. Higher sulfide oxidation, ubiquinol dehydrogenase activity, and sulfide:quinone oxidoreductase (SQR) activity were observed in sulfur-grown cells more than in iron-gr
