Auxiliary voltage enhanced microbial methane oxidation co-driven by nitrite and sulfate reduction.

In this study, single-chamber bioelectrochemical reactors (EMNS) were used to investigate the methane oxidation driven by sulfate and nitrite reduction with the auxiliary voltage. Results showed that the methane oxidation was simultaneously driven by sulfate and nitrite reduction, with more methane being converted using the auxiliary voltage. When the voltage was 1.6 V, the maximum removal rate was achieved at 8.05 mg L-1 d-1. Carbon dioxide and methanol were the main products of methane oxidation. Simultaneously, nitrogen, nitrous oxide, sulfur ions, and hydrogen sulfide were detected as prod

Evaluating enhanced sulfate reduction and optimized volatile fatty acids (VFA) composition in anaerobic reactor by Fe (III) addition.

Anaerobic reactors with ferric iron addition have been experimentally demonstrated to be able to simultaneously improve sulfate reduction and organic matter degradation during sulfate-containing wastewater treatment. In this work, a mathematical model is developed to evaluate the impact of ferric iron addition on sulfate reduction and organic carbon removal as well as the volatile fatty acids (VFA) composition in anaerobic reactor. The model is successfully calibrated and validated using independent long-term experimental data sets from the anaerobic reactor with Fe (III) addition under differ

Advance in the sulfur-based electron donor autotrophic denitrification for nitrate nitrogen removal from wastewater.

In the field of wastewater treatment, nitrate nitrogen (NO3--N) is one of the significant contaminants of concern. Sulfur autotrophic denitrification technology, which uses a variety of sulfur-based electron donors to reduce NO3--N to nitrogen (N2) through sulfur autotrophic denitrification bacteria, has emerged as a novel nitrogen removal technology to replace heterotrophic denitrification in the field of wastewater treatment due to its low cost, environmental friendliness, and high nitrogen removal efficiency. This paper reviews the advance of reduced sulfur compounds (such as elemental sulf

Treatment of high-strength sulfate wastewater using an autotrophic biocathode in view of elemental sulfur recovery.

Treatment of high-strength sulfate wastewaters is becoming a research issue not only for its optimal management but also for the possibility of recovering elemental sulfur. Moreover, sulfate-rich wastewater production is expected to grow due to the increased SO2 emission contained in flue gases which are treated by chemical absorption in water. Bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) are a promising alternative for sulfate reduction with a lack of electron donor, since hydrogen can be generated in situ from electricity. However, complete sulfate reduction leads to hydrogen sulfide as final sulfur co

High genetic and physiological diversity of sulfate-reducing bacteria isolated from an oligotrophic lake sediment.

The community structure of sulfate-reducing bacteria in littoral and profundal sediments of the oligotrophic Lake Stechlin (Germany) was investigated. A collection of 32 strains was isolated from the highest positive dilutions of most-probable-number series, and their partial 16S rRNA gene sequences and genomic fingerprints based on ERIC (enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus)-PCR were analyzed. The strains fell into eight distinct phylogenetic lineages, and the majority (70%) showed a close affiliation to the genus Desulfovibrio. Most of the remaining strains (22%) were related to t

Effect of dimethyl disulfide on the sulfur formation and microbial community composition during the biological H2S removal from sour gas streams.

Removal of organic and inorganic sulfur compounds from sour gases is required because of their toxicity and atmospheric pollution. The most common are hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and methanethiol (MT). Under oxygen-limiting conditions about 92 mol% of sulfide is oxidized to sulfur by haloalkaliphilic sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (SOB), whilst the remainder is oxidized either biologically to sulfate or chemically to thiosulfate. MT is spontaneously oxidized to dimethyl disulfide (DMDS), which was found to inhibit the oxidation of sulfide to sulfate. Hence, we assessed the effect of DMDS on product form

Mercury methylation and sulfate reduction rates in mangrove sediments, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: The role of different microorganism consortia.

Recent studies have shown Hg methylation in mangrove sediments, however, little is known about the different microorganism consortia involved. We investigated the participation of prokaryotes in general, iron-reducing bacteria-IRB, sulfate-reducing bacteria-SRB, methanogens and fungi in Hg methylation and sulfate reduction rates (SRR) in mangrove sediments using iron amendments for IRB and specific inhibitors for the other microorganisms. Sediment samples were collected from two mangrove zones, tidal flat and mangrove forest (named root sediments). Samples were incubated with 203Hg or 35SO42-

Linkage between community diversity of sulfate-reducing microorganisms and methylmercury concentration in paddy soil.

Sulfate-reducing microorganisms (SRM) have been thought to play a key role in mercury (Hg) methylation in anoxic environments. The current study examined the linkage between SRM abundance and diversity and contents of methylmercury (MeHg) in paddy soils collected from a historical Hg mining area in China. Soil profile samples were collected from four sites over a distance gradient downstream the Hg mining operation. Results showed that MeHg content in the soil of each site significantly decreased with the extending distance away from Hg mine. Soil MeHg content was correlated positively with ab

Microbial reduction of sulfur dioxide with anaerobically digested municipal sewage biosolids as electron donors.

A concentrated stream of sulfur dioxide (SO2) is produced by regeneration of the sorbent in certain new regenerable processes for the desulfurization of flue gas. We have previously proposed that this SO2 can be converted to elemental sulfur for disposal or byproduct recovery using a microbial/Claus process. In this process, two-thirds of the SO2-reducing gas stream would be contacted with a mixed culture containing sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB), where SO2 would act as an electron acceptor with reduction to hydrogen sulfide (H2S). This H2S could then be recombined with the remaining SO2 and

Isolation and screening of sulfur-oxidizing bacteria from coast of Bhavnagar, India, and formulation of consortium for bioremediation.

Reduced sulfur compounds are a nuisance in coastal industries causing heavy economical as well as ecological loss. One such compound, hydrogen sulfide, is proven toxic to aquatic animals as it interferes with their respiration and metabolism as well as overall development, thereby causing direct increase in mortality. Typically, 96-h LC50 values to freshwater and marine fishes are 0-25µM and 525-700µM, respectively. Management of sulfide and other reduced sulfur compounds from aquaculture water and sediment using bioremediating sulfur-oxidizing bacteria as probiotics has attracted attention in

How Does Triclocarban Affect Sulfur Transformation in Anaerobic Systems?

Triclocarban (TCC), as a typical antimicrobial agent, accumulates at substantial levels in natural environments and engineered systems. This work investigated the impact of TCC on anaerobic sulfur transformation, especially toxic H2S production. Experimental findings revealed that TCC facilitated sulfur flow from the sludge solid phase to liquid phase, promoted sulfate reduction and sulfur-containing amino acid degradation, and largely improved anaerobic H2S production, i.e., 50-600 mg/kg total suspended solids (TSS) TCC increased the cumulative H2S yields by 24.76-478.12%. Although TCC can be

The mechanism of achieving in-situ sulfide control while completing nitrate reduction in the anoxic stage of anaerobic/anoxic/oxic process.

In the anoxic stage of anaerobic/anoxic/oxic (A2/O) process, similar to the anaerobic stage, sulfate can be reduced by sulfate-reducing bacteria to sulfide, threatening human health and environmental security. Without affecting nitrogen removal, utilizing nitrate refluxed from the oxic stage to directly interfere with sulfide conversion might be an effective strategy for in-situ sulfide control. Herein, the performance and mechanism of nitrate reduction on inhibiting sulfate reduction and controlling sulfide were explored for the first time in a lab-scale anoxic bioreactor in depth. The result

[Microbiological investigations of high-temperature horizons of the Kongdian petroleum reservoir in connection with field trial of a biotechnology for enhancement of oil recovery].

The physicochemical conditions and microbiological characteristics of the formation waters of the Kongdian bed of the Dagang oil field (China) were studied. It was demonstrated that this bed is a high-temperature ecosystem with formation waters characterized by low mineralization. The concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus compounds, as well as of electron acceptors, are low. Oil and oil gas are the main organic matter sources. The bed is exploited with water-flooding. The oil stratum was inhabited mostly by anaerobic thermophilic microorganisms, including fermentative (10(2)-10(5) cells/ml

Bacterial diversity in the surface sediments of the hypoxic zone near the Changjiang Estuary and in the East China Sea.

Changjiang (Yangtze River) Estuary has experienced severe hypoxia since the 1950s. In order to investigate potential ecological functions of key microorganisms in relation to hypoxia, we performed 16S rRNA-based Illumina Miseq sequencing to explore the bacterial diversity in the surface sediments of the hypoxic zone near the Changjiang Estuary and in the East China Sea (ECS). The results showed that numerous Proteobacteria-affiliated sequences in the sediments of the inner continental shelf were related to both sulfate-reducing and sulfur-oxidizing bacteria, suggesting an active sulfur cycle i

Sulfur content in foods and beverages and its role in human and animal metabolism: A scoping review of recent studies.

Sulfur is a vital element that all living things require, being a component of proteins and other bio-organic substances. The various kinds and varieties of microbes in nature allow for the transformation of this element. It also should be emphasized that volatile sulfur compounds are typically present in food in trace amounts. Life cannot exist without sulfur, yet it also poses a potential health risk. The colon's sulfur metabolism, which is managed by eukaryotic cells, is much better understood than the S metabolism in gastrointestinal bacteria. Numerous additional microbial processes are an

Sulfate-reducing bacteria in floating macrophyte rhizospheres from an Amazonian floodplain lake in Bolivia and their association with Hg methylation.

Five subgroups of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) were detected by PCR in three macrophyte rhizospheres (Polygonum densiflorum, Hymenachne donacifolia, and Ludwigia helminthorriza) and three subgroups in Eichhornia crassipes from La Granja, a floodplain lake from the upper Madeira basin. The SRB community varied according to the macrophyte species but with different degrees of association with their roots. The rhizosphere of the C4 plant Polygonum densiflorum had higher frequencies of SRB subgroups as well as higher mercury methylation potentials (27.5 to 36.1%) and carbon (16.06 +/- 5.40%), n

Fate and transport of mercury in environmental media and human exposure.

Mercury is emitted to the atmosphere from various natural and anthropogenic sources, and degrades with difficulty in the environment. Mercury exists as various species, mainly elemental (Hg(0)) and divalent (Hg(2+)) mercury depending on its oxidation states in air and water. Mercury emitted to the atmosphere can be deposited into aqueous environments by wet and dry depositions, and some can be re-emitted into the atmosphere. The deposited mercury species, mainly Hg(2+), can react with various organic compounds in water and sediment by biotic reactions mediated by sulfur-reducing bacteria, and

Evidence of methylmercury production and modification of the microbial community structure in estuary sediments contaminated with wastewater treatment plant effluents.

The Seine's estuary (France) waters are the receptacle of effluents originating from wastewater treatment plants (WWTP). In this estuary, mudflats are deposition zones for sediments and their associated contaminants, and play an essential role in the mercury (Hg) biogeochemical cycle mainly due to indigenous microorganisms. Microcosms were used to assess the impact of WWTP-effluents on mercury methylation by monitoring Hg species (total dissolved Hg in porewater, methylmercury and total mercury) and on microbial communities in sediments. After effluent amendment, methylmercury (MeHg) concentra
