Photoprotective effects of methoxycinnamidopropyl polysilsesquioxane.

A new sunscreen ingredient, methoxycinnamidopropyl polysilsesquioxane (MCP-PSQ), which contains an UV-absorbing p-methoxycinnamoyl group, has been developed synthetically and evaluated using in vitro and in vivo approaches. Previous studies revealed that MCP-PSQ has a raising or boosting effect on the sun protection factor (SPF) of other sunscreen agents. In this study, we demonstrated that MCP-PSQ, an organic/inorganic hybrid compound, has photoprotective effects for human fibroblasts, and for hairless mouse and human skin. MCP-PSQ increases cell viability and suppresses the expression of p53

Supramolecular avobenzone sunscreen: a promising method for enhancing UV protection and photostability.

The damages caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation to the skin have become a global public health concern. Long-term exposure to UV radiation can lead to serious consequences, such as sunburn, tanning, photoaging, and even skin cancer. As a key product for resisting UV damage, sunscreen has attracted much attention for its effectiveness and safety. Avobenzone is an important chemical sunscreen agent that is widely used in sunscreen products due to its excellent protective effect against long-wave UVA radiation. However, avobenzone has drawbacks such as poor photostability. Therefore, we linked a

Phototrauma prevention.

In response to an alarming increase in skin cancer rates, much work is being done to find causes, identify populations at risk, and appropriately modify behaviors and protective strategies. The causes of nonmelanoma and melanoma skin cancers are multifactorial; however, the evidence implicating ultraviolet radiation as a major factor is mounting. Sunlight consists of four important wavelengths. Two of them, UVA and UVB, are the most harmful because they cause direct cellular trauma and immunologic suppression. Sunburn is a delayed prostaglandin-mediated erythema that implies severe damage to D

Cutaneous Photoprotection: A Review of the Current Status and Evolving Strategies.

Ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure is well established as the major environmental risk factor for the development of melanoma, cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC), and basal cell carcinoma (BCC). Additional risk factors including genetic mutations, other environmental agents, and immune status are important in modulating the effects of UVR. Dermatologists advocate a multi-pronged approach to minimizing UVR exposure including lifestyle modifications, UVR protective clothing, and topically applied sun-protective products, i.e. sunscreen. Sensitivity to sunscreens.

The patients sensitised to sunscreen agents who attended our Contact Dermatitis Clinic between February 1985 to March 1987 have been reviewed. 15 (5%) of 280 patients tested with sunscreens had positive reactions; 3 of them were allergic to more than one agent. The most frequent contact allergens were hydroxy methoxy methyl benzophenone (Mexenone) [6], followed by isopropyl dibenzoylmethane (Eusolex 8020/8021) [5], octyl dimethyl para-aminobenzoate (Escalol 507) [2], and one reaction each to butyl methoxy dibenzoylmethane (Parsol 1789), amyl dimethyl para-aminobenzoate (Escalol 506), and ethox

Attenuation of vasospasm and hemoglobin-induced constriction in the rabbit basilar artery by a novel protease inhibitor.

Abnormal photosensitivity syndromes form a significant and common group of skin diseases. They include primary (idiopathic) photodermatoses such as polymorphic light eruption (PLE), chronic actinic dermatitis (CAD), actinic prurigo, hydroa vacciniforme and solar urticaria, in addition to drug- and chemical-induced photosensitivity and photo-exacerbated dermatoses. They can be extremely disabling and difficult to diagnose. PLE, characterized by a recurrent pruritic papulo-vesicular eruption of affected skin within hours of sun exposure, is best managed by restriction of ultraviolet radiation (U

Natural products as aids for protecting the skin's immune system against UV damage.

Modern sun-protection products reduce the risk for erythema and DNA damage, but even those products with a very high sun protection factor (SPF) and full-spectrum UVB and UVA protection may not prevent UV radiation (UVR)-induced immunomodulation. Formulating sunscreens with a high SPF, as well as a high immune protection factor, is necessary for preventing skin cancer and maintaining effective immune responses to infectious disease after sun exposure. Supplementing current sun-protection products with immunoprotective compounds may help fill the gap between erythema protection and immunoprotec

The use of sunscreen starting on the first day after ablative fractional skin resurfacing.

BACKGROUND: The most common side-effect of ablative fractional skin resurfacing in Asians is post inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). Various attempts have been made to reduce the occurrence of PIH after laser treatment including sun avoidance, the use of preoperative and postoperative treatment regimens, and treatment using conservative energy settings and epidermal protection. OBJECTIVES: To determine whether the use of broad-spectrum sunscreen with anti-inflammatory agents starting on the first day after fractional CO2 laser skin resurfacing reduces the incidence of post laser PIH. Recent Advances in Clinical Research for Skin Cancer Chemoprevention.

Neoplasm arising from the keratinocytes or melanocytes in the skin is the most prevalent type of cancer in the United States and worldwide. Since ultraviolet (UV) radiation may be a causing factor for several types of skin cancer, effective strategies to manage skin cancer include preventive measures such as minimizing exposure to UV and applying sunscreens. However, the effect of sunscreen in reducing skin cancer incidence remains uncertain. An alternative approach to prevent skin cancer is chemoprevention, which is defined as using either natural products or synthetic compounds to inhibit, d

UV Filters and Their Distribution on the Skin through Safe, Non-Penetrating Vehicles.

The effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation trigger human skin reaction, which can result in erythema, photoaging, and/or skin cancer. Sunscreens play an important role against the negative effects of UV radiation on the human skin. However, they should satisfy certain criteria, with the main one being photostability, to avoid the formation of health-threatening reactive intermediates. It has to be kept in mind, however, that photo-stable UV filters have the undesirable propensity to transfer energy to molecular oxygen and generate the very reactive singlet oxygen. They should also be well toler

Prevention of ultraviolet-light-induced herpes labialis by sunscreen.

Sunlight exposure is reported by some patients to precede onset of recurrent herpes labialis. Ultraviolet (UV) B light is known to be a stimulus for the reactivation of herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections. We assessed the effect of a sunblocking agent on UV-light-induced reactivation of recurrent herpes labialis in a double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial. 38 patients were exposed on two separate occasions to four minimum erythema doses of UV light at an area of previous labial herpes recurrence. A solution containing sunscreen was applied to the lips before one exposure and a matc

Mechanism-based selection of pharmacologic agents for rosacea.

All effective agents used to treat rosacea have a common mechanism of action: anti-inflammatory effects. Concomitant with this, many of these agents also show antioxidant effects. Both anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects may address the proposed underlying pathophysiology of rosacea. Future topical formulations may involve the combination of active pharmacologic agents and sunscreens or sun blocks to address the proposed etiologic role played by UV radiation in the pathophysiology of rosacea.

Uro-dermatological problems of a construction worker: paraaminobenzoic acid as a systemic photosensitizer.

A 51-year-old man suffered from an acute eczematous rash confined to the air- and light-exposed areas of the skin. As a construction worker he was exposed to common occupational allergens such as epoxy resins, but there was also remarkable holiday-associated sun exposure. He did not use any sunscreen agents. Several weeks before the onset of skin eruptions, conservative treatment of Peyronie's disease with oral PotabaTM (potassium paraaminobenzoate) had been started. Airborne contact dermatitis to volatile allergens was ruled out, while photopatchtesting revealed photoallergy to paraaminobenzo

Photoprotection.

UNLABELLED: Many agents affect the transmission of ultraviolet light to human skin. These include naturally occurring photoprotective agents (ozone, pollutants, clouds, and fog), naturally occurring biologic agents (epidermal chromophores), physical photoprotective agents (clothing, hats, make-ups, sunglasses, and window glass), and ultraviolet light filters (sunscreen ingredients and sunless tanning agents). In addition, there are agents that can modulate the effects of ultraviolet light on the skin (antioxidants and others). All of the above are reviewed in this article. LEARNING OBJECTIVE:

A European multicentre photopatch test study.

BACKGROUND: The two most common agent groups currently responsible for photoallergic contact dermatitis (PACD) are organic ultraviolet (UV) absorbers in sunscreens and topical nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). However, availability of information on the photoallergenic potential of these agents is scarce. OBJECTIVES: To obtain current information on the frequency of PACD to 19 organic UV absorbers and five topical NSAIDs, including newer agents, in common usage in Europe. METHODS: A prospective, multicentre photopatch test study was conducted with 1031 patients attending for inv

Photoprotection for people with skin of colour: needs and strategies.

Skin of colour or pigmented skin has unique characteristics: it has a higher eumelanin-to-pheomelanin ratio, more mature melanosomes, an increased amount of melanin distributed in the upper layers of the epidermis, and more efficient DNA repair compared with lighter skin. However, individuals with skin of colour are at a significant risk of skin damage caused by ultraviolet radiation, including the development of photodermatoses and photoageing changes such as uneven skin tone, and are predisposed to pigmentary disorders. In fact, one of the most common conditions leading to dermatology consul
