To obtain easier access to avulsed roots in the intradural space for patients suffering cervical root avulsion, the authors of this study developed a novel repair method. This involves using nerve grafts to bridge corresponding segments of the spinal cord and the trunk or cord level of the plexus, respectively, in two surgical stages. All eight patients admitted to this study received pre- and post-operative workups of electrophysiological evaluations and muscle power grading through Medical Research Council (MRC) scores. The degrees of impairment were also graded according to a modified versi

Phospholipid fraction pattern was determined in sural nerve in cases of suspected storage diseases. The material was obtained by means fo biopsy from 22 patients. In some patients features of polyneuropathy were found. Normal values of phospholipids were determined in 22 dying patients who had to neurological diseases. The most frequently observed change concerning the biochemical composition of the sural nerve in this material was a fall in the total amount of phosphatidyl ethanolamine (cephalin) and appearance of lysolecithins which are normally absent. In attempted correlation of histologic

Deltoid paralysis after axillary nerve injury results in limitations in shoulder function and stability. In the setting of an isolated axillary nerve injury with no clinical or electromyographic evidence of recovery that is within 6 to 9 months postinjury, the authors' preferred technique to reinnervate the deltoid is to reconstruct the axillary nerve with sural nerve grafting. Intraoperative neuromuscular electrophysiology is critical to determine the continuity of the axillary nerve before proceeding with reconstruction. The majority of the time, both an anterior and posterior incision and d

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to present the outcome of sural nerve grafting that focuses on motor fascicles in 6 patients with high radial nerve injuries with defects of more than 9 cm.
METHODS: Six patients with a high radial nerve complete injury were treated with a sural nerve autograft during a 6-year interval from June 1994 to June 2000. The gap of the radial nerve, which was measured in the surgical field, was 9 cm in 1 patient, 10 cm in 4 patients, and 11 cm in 1 patient. There were 4 men and 2 women with an average age of 32 years (range, 14-49 years). The causes of the injur

Somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEPs) to stimulation of the tibial nerve at the knee (TN-K) and ankle (TN-A), and the sural nerve at the ankle (SN-A), were recorded from 3 or 4 spinal levels during surgery for scoliosis in 11 neurologically normal subjects. With stimulation of all 3 nerves, the propagation velocity along the spine was nonlinear: it was faster over cauda equina and midthoracic cord than over caudal spinal cord. Over the mid-thoracic cord, TN-K SSEP propagation was faster than that of TN-A and SN-A SSEPs, whereas over the caudal spinal cord these values were similar on stimula

Nerve repair after injury can be effectively accomplished by direct suture approximation of the proximal and distal segments. This is more successful if coadaptation can be achieved without tension. Currently, the gold standard repair of larger deficits is the transplantation of an autologous sensory sural nerve graft. However, a significant disadvantage of this technique is the inevitable donor morbidity (sensory loss, neuroma and scar formation) after harvesting of the sural nerve. Moreover, limitation of autologous donor nerve length and fixed diameter of the available sural nerve are major

To enhance the accuracy for determining the precise localization, the findings of the compound nerve action potentials (CNAPs) of the common peroneal nerve (CPN) were investigated in patients with common peroneal mononeuropathy (CPM) in the knee, and the sural sensory nerve action potentials (SNAPs) were also analyzed. Twenty-five patients with CPM in the knee were retrospectively reviewed. The findings of the CNAPs of the CPN recorded at the fibular neck and the sural SNAPs were analyzed. The lesion was localized at the fibular head (abnormal CNAPs) and at or distal to the fibular head (norma

BACKGROUND: Nerve interposition grafting is an important technique in nerve reconstructive surgery that is used when a primary repair is not feasible without significant tension. This study sought to evaluate the long-term morbidity of the medial antebrachial cutaneous (MABC) nerve as an alternative donor nerve in comparison with sural nerve harvest.
METHODS: A single surgeon and institution retrospective chart review was performed to identify all patients who underwent nerve autografting using the sural and MABC as donor nerves between January 1, 2000 and December 31, 2019. Surveys assessed

Cross-face nerve grafting (CFNG) allows for spontaneous, involuntary facial movement for patients with irreversible hemifacial paralysis. This technique uses an intact contralateral facial nucleus and nerve as an input and axon source, allowing donor neural input to be routed through a nerve graft across the face. The sural nerve is well equipped for use as a nerve graft due to its length and minimal donor site morbidity. Endoscopic nerve harvest techniques allow for efficient, minimally invasive dissection that improves the integrity of the harvested nerve.

Most injuries to the femoral nerve are iatrogenic in origin and occur during resection of large retroperitoneal tumours. When the defect is considerable a nerve graft is mandatory to avoid tension across the suture line. We describe two cases of iatrogenic femoral nerve injury which recovered well after reconstruction with long sural nerve grafts. The probable reasons for success were that we performed the grafting soon after the injury, the patients were not too old, the nerve repairs were reinforced with fibrin glue and electrical stimulation of the quadriceps was administered to prevent mus

The harvesting of the sural nerve for autologous grafting usually produces symptoms of low intensity and short duration. In rare occasions that procedure may lead to the formation of a symptomatic neuroma in the proximal stump. The symptoms of this complication are usually controlled by clinical treatment and the surgical procedure is left for the therapeutic failures. In this paper we present the case of a patient with a sural nerve neuroma submitted to surgical treatment by a variant of the centro-central anastomosis technique, developed for the treatment of amputation neuromas, that resulte

Microneurosurgical operative techniques permit satisfactory restoration of sensation in many lesions of the inferior alveolar nerve. Therefore, restoration of the sensory deficit is becoming increasingly more important in the total functional rehabilitation of individuals with mandibular continuity defects involving transection of or permanent damage to the inferior alveolar nerve. This article reviews the case history of a young man who underwent bilateral osseous mandibular reconstruction and microneurosurgical reconstruction of his inferior alveolar nerves following severe maxillofacial tra

Chronic-inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) is a rare immune-mediated polyneuropathy causing substantial disability. While both cell-mediated and humoral mechanisms contribute to CIDP, the role of complement remains poorly understood. Considering the rise of complement-targeted treatment, it is crucial to examine the role of complement in CIDP. In this cross-sectional, study, sural nerve biopsies from 55 CIDP patients were analyzed using histopathology, gene- and protein-based techniques, comparing them to two non-diseased controls (NDCs), as well as 8 patients with hereditary neu

PURPOSE: This study sought to clarify the positional relationship between the Achilles tendon and sural nerve using ultrasound.
METHODS: We studied 176 legs in 88 healthy volunteers. The positional relationship between the Achilles tendon and sural nerve at heights of 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 cm proximal from the calcaneus' proximal margin was investigated by distance and depth. Setting the X-axis (left/right) as the horizontal axis and Y-axis (depth) as the vertical axis against ultrasound images, we investigated the distance between the lateral margin of the Achilles tendon to the midpoint of

Sural nerve injury may occur during the posterolateral approach to the ankle during fracture fixation. We aimed to map its location in a posterolateral approach in cadaveric specimens. A posterolateral approach was used in 28 cadaver legs with the incision made halfway between the medial border of the fibula and the lateral border of Achilles tendon, extending proximally from the tip of the lateral malleolus. The sural nerve was identified and the distance from the distal tip of the incision to where it crossed the incision proximally was measured. The mean distance was 3.4 ± 1.2 (range 0.5-7.

The sural nerve runs a superficial course in the posterior leg. Reported sural nerve injuries in athletes are very uncommon. This case report highlights the occurrence of numbness to the heel and lateral ankle of a footballer following direct trauma to the posterior calf. This led to a hematoma developing around the sural nerve and the combination of the hematoma and the direct nerve trauma resulted in the sural nerve dysfunction. Full sensation returned in this player's heel and lateral ankle after 2 weeks of rehabilitation. Athletes presenting with numbness to the heel and lateral ankle shou
