Surgical stapling equipment was used to create a gastropexy in 20 dogs undergoing emergency surgery for gastric dilatation and volvulus (GDV). The technique involved creation of a tunnel between the seromuscular layer and the submucosa of the pyloric antrum, and a matching tunnel beneath the right m. transversus abdominis. We retrospectively reviewed 56 consecutive patients treated surgically for a pharyngeal pouch at our institution between 1989-1999 (10 years). Various surgical procedures were performed including endoscopic stapling (20), external excision (23), Dohlman's procedure (9), pouch inversion (3), cricopharyngeal myotomy only (3), and pouch suspension (1). BACKGROUND: Staple line reinforcement (SLR) is commonly used in bariatric surgeries to reduce leaks and bleeds. With the evolution of staplers, the need for buttressing with the latest surgical stapling technology is in question. The efficacy of GORE® SEAMGUARD® (G-SLR) to improve staple line strength based on an established measure of burst pressure was evaluated. The surgical treatment of a pharyngeal pouch with endoscopic stapling diverticulotomy is a relatively new concept. Long-term results and complications are yet to be fully studied. We describe a patient who developed persistent pharyngeal pain and foreign body sensation due to retention of a clump of staples at the cricopharyngeal sphincter. This complication has not been reported before. This case highlights the need for repeat endoscopy rather than a barium swallow X-ray if the patients are symptomatic after stapling procedures.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this article is an assessment of new surgical procedure--stapled hemorroidectomy according to Longo. We do concentrate on surgical complications and possibilities of it's management.
METHODS: Prospective, clinical follow up of patients in which stapled hemorrhoidectomy was performed during the period of 2 years (1st December 2000--30st November 2002). Erosion of metal surgical staples is a rare but described surgical complication. Staple erosion in a bladder may present with hematuria, urinary tract infection (UTI), bladder pain, or fistula. We present a 64-year-old male with a history of urothelial carcinoma treated by cystoprostatectomy with neobladder reconstruction. Due to the recent development of absorbable surgical staples, application of gynecologic stapling methods has expanded to the field of obstetrics. RATIONALE: Complete small bowel obstruction (SBO) is a common surgical emergency often resulting from adhesive bands installed after a surgical procedure. However, SBO caused by surgical staples used in a previous operation is unusual. Herein, we report a rare case of adhesive ileus induced by surgical staples.

Continent ileal urinary reservoirs were created in dogs to study absorbable surgical staples. Within each pouch, certain controlled observations were possible. The staples and chemically similar polyglactin absorbable sutures caused almost identical tissue reactions. The staples outlasted the sutures, probably because of greater size. Inverted and everted staple closures worked equally well. It appears feasible to consider clinical urinary diversion with absorbable staples, a time-saving method.
