Seroepidemiologic survey for Chlamydia suis in wild boar (Sus scrofa) populations in Italy.

We used serology to estimate the prevalence of exposure to chlamydiae in Italian populations of wild boars (Sus scrofa). Sera from 173 hunter-killed wild boars harvested during the 2006-2009 hunting seasons in three Italian regions were tested for antibodies to Chlamydia suis, Chlamydophila pecorum, Chlamydophila abortus, and Chlamydophila psittaci by the microimmunofluorescence test. Antibody titers to chlamydiae ≥ 1:32 were detected in 110 of the 173 samples tested (63.6%). Specific reactivity could be assessed only in 44 sera with antibody titers to C. suis that were two- to threefold highe

Behavioural and cardiac responses towards conspecific distress calls in domestic pigs (Sus scrofa).

In domestic pigs, vocalisation can be an indicator of distress and negative emotional states. It might play a role in the transfer of emotion between individuals ('emotional contagion' or 'empathy'), which could result in impaired animal welfare on a group level based on the distress in an individual member of the group. The aim of this study was to characterise the responses of pigs to conspecific distress calls. We performed a playback experiment in an open arena with 24 juvenile German Landrace pigs, during which individual subjects were exposed to both conspecific distress calls and an art

Prevalence of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae infection in hunted wild boars (Sus scrofa) in Germany.

Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae is an important pathogen of the porcine respiratory tract. Subclinically and chronically infected pigs may enter a permanent carrier state, harboring A. pleuropneumoniae in lungs or tonsils. Despite the enormous role of A. pleuropneumoniae in domestic swine production, no published data about prevalence and distribution of A. pleuropneumoniae infections in wild boars (Sus scrofa) are available. Antibodies against A. pleuropneumoniae have been detected in serum of wild boars from Slovenia. The aim of the present study was to evaluate A. pleuropneumoniae infection

Serologic survey of the wild boar (Sus scrofa) for Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato.

Sera of 642 wild boars (Sus scrofa) shot by hunters in ten administrative regions of the Czech Republic during 1995-2000, were tested by indirect hemagglutination assay (IHA) for the presence of anti-Borrelia IgG. Antibodies to Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (Bb) were detected in serum samples from all 10 regions, and overall seroprevalence rate was 12.8%. Titres of antibodies ranged from 1:80 to 1:640. Borrelia antibodies were most frequent in the animals from three administrative regions of the Czech Republic: Moravskoslezsky (25.0%), Pardubicky (25.0%) and Královehradecky (24.1%), followed

Wild boars (Sus scrofa) as reservoirs of Brucella suis biovar 2 in Croatia.

This work presents the results of findings for brucellosis in wild boars and domestic swine in two regions of Croatia. In the region of Djakovo the blood samples of 211 wild boars were analysed and in 29.4% of the samples serologically positive reactions were established. In the same region the blood samples of 1080 domestic swine on pastures were also analysed and positive serological reactions were established in 12.3%. In the regions around Lonjsko Polje the blood samples of 53 wild boars were analysed and in 22.6% of them positive serological reactions were established. On several location

Surveillance of important bacterial and parasitic infections in Danish wild boars (Sus scrofa).

BACKGROUND: Similar to the situation in other European countries, Danish wild boars may harbour a wide range of pathogens infectious to humans and domestic pigs. Although wild boars must be kept behind fences in Denmark, hunting and consumption of the meat may cause zoonotic transmission. Moreover, most infections of wild boars are transmissible to domestic pigs, which may have important economic consequences. The aim of this study was to investigate whether Danish wild boars were infected with bacteria and parasites transmissible to humans or domestic pigs: Brucella suis, methicillin-resistan

Hydromorphone-induced Neurostimulation in a Yorkshire Swine (Sus scrofa) after Myocardial Infarction Surgery.

Opiates play an important role in the control of pain associated with thoracotomy in both people and animals. However, key side effects, including sedation and respiratory depression, could limit the use of opiates in animals that are lethargic due to cardiac disease. In addition, a rare side effect-neuroexcitation resulting in pathologic behavioral changes (seizures, mania, muscle fasciculation)-after the administration of morphine or hydromorphone is well-documented in many species. In pigs, however, these drugs have been shown to stimulate an increase in normal activity. In the case present

KRASG12D and TP53R167H Cooperate to Induce Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma in Sus scrofa Pigs.

Although survival has improved in recent years, the prognosis of patients with advanced pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) remains poor. Despite substantial differences in anatomy, physiology, genetics, and metabolism, the overwhelming majority of preclinical testing relies on transgenic mice. Hence, while mice have allowed for tremendous advances in cancer biology, they have been a poor predictor of drug performance/toxicity in the clinic. Given the greater similarity of sus scrofa pigs to humans, we engineered transgenic sus scrofa expressing a LSL-KRASG12D-TP53R167H cassette. By applyi

Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in hunted wild boars (Sus scrofa) from southeastern France.

Toxoplasma gondii (Nicolle et Manceaux, 1908) is an obligate intracellular, parasitic protozoan within the phylum Apicomplexa that causes toxoplasmosis in mammalian hosts (including humans) and birds. Since meat of wild boar, Sus scrofa (Linnaeus), has been demonstrated to be a potential source of human infection, a careful evaluation of the prevalence of infection with T. gondii in hunted animals is needed to protect public health. In the Var area in southeastern France, we performed a spatio-temporal survey in order to investigate the prevalence of IgG antibodies in wild boars shot by hunter

Occurrence of osteochondromatosis (multiple cartilaginous exostoses) in a domestic pig (Sus scrofa domesticus).

Osteochondromatosis is a condition in which multiple benign, cartilage-capped tumors arise from the surface of bones formed by endochondral ossification. The current report describes the presence of 4 prominent exophytic masses, measuring between 4 and 13 cm in diameter, arising from the surface of the ribs, and located within the thoracic cavity, in a 2-year-old female domestic pig (Sus scrofa domesticus). Histological studies revealed that masses were well-differentiated, cartilage-capped proliferations with an orderly pattern of endochondral mineralization toward deeper areas. The observed

The spatial ecology of free-ranging domestic pigs (Sus scrofa) in western Kenya.

BACKGROUND: In many parts of the developing world, pigs are kept under low-input systems where they roam freely to scavenge food. These systems allow poor farmers the opportunity to enter into livestock keeping without large capital investments. This, combined with a growing demand for pork, especially in urban areas, has led to an increase in the number of small-holder farmers keeping free range pigs as a commercial enterprise. Despite the benefits which pig production can bring to a household, keeping pigs under a free range system increases the risk of the pig acquiring diseases, either pro

First isolation of Trichinella britovi from a wild boar (Sus scrofa) in Belgium.

Since 1992, when the European Union Council Directive requires that wild boars (Sus scrofa) hunted in EU for commercial purpose should be examined for Trichinella, the infection has not been detected in wild boars from Belgium, despite serological evidence of the presence of anti-Trichinella antibodies in wildlife and previous reports of Trichinella larvae in this host species. In November 2004, Trichinella larvae were detected in a wild boar hunted near Mettet, Namur province (Southern Belgium). Larvae were identified as Trichinella britovi by polymerase chain reaction methods. This is the fi

Shigella infection as observed in the experimentally inoculated domestic pig, Sus scrofa domestica.

The domestic pig, Sus scrofa domestica, was investigated as a potential animal model for shigellosis. We examined the effects of pig age, pig breed and antibiotic pretreatment upon Shigella infection. Shigella dysenteriae, and Shigella flexneri (both virulent and avirulent strains) were utilized. Our results indicated that young (4-week-old), conventionally re ared, domestic pigs were routinely, but briefly, colonized (average=3.5+/-2.5 days) following oral or gavage administration ofS. flexneri, as determined by direct rectal cultures. The duration of S. dysenteriae colonization was significa

Induction of c-fos gene expression by spinal cord transection in Sus scrofa.

Functional responses of primary sensory afferents and spinal cord were monitored in swine subjected to a high cervical (C1) spinal transection. Two and a half hours after transection, dorsal root ganglia and cervical and thoracolumbar spinal segments were processed immunocytochemically for the c-fos gene product, Fos and related antigens. In spinal-transected animals, Fos-like immunoreactivity (FLI) was induced in spinal laminae I, V, VII and X and the intermediolateral cell column but not in sensory ganglia as compared to controls: spinal-intact age-matched littermates. Global Prevalence of Neospora caninum in Domestic Pigs (Sus domesticus) and Wild Boars (Sus scrofa): A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Neospora caninum (Apicomplexa, Sarcocystidae) is a protozoan parasite regarded as a major cause of reproductive failure in cattle. Swine are susceptible to N. caninum infection; however, the role of these animals in the circulation, maintenance, and transmission of N. caninum remains unclear. Therefore, we aimed to estimate the global seroprevalence of N. caninum in domestic pigs (Sus domesticus) and wild boars (Sus scrofa). METHODS: Online databases including PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar were systematically searched to identify relevant studies up to 30 Apri

Pharmacokinetics of a single oral dose of grapiprant in juvenile pigs (Sus scrofa domestica).

Both pet and research pigs can suffer from some degree of pain from surgery, injuries, or osteoarthritis (OA). Despite this, there is a paucity of data on safe and effective analgesia agents in pigs. Grapiprant is an EP4 antagonist that blocks the action of the pro-inflammatory prostanoid, PGE2 . It has shown efficacy in attenuating pain associated with ovariohysterectomy and OA in dogs. However, there are no data regarding grapiprant in pigs. Therefore, the pharmacokinetic profile of orally administered grapiprant to juvenile pigs (Sus scrofa domestica) was evaluated in this study. Pheromones, binding proteins, and olfactory systems in the pig (Sus scrofa): An updated review.

Pigs utilize multimodal communication for reproductive and other behaviors, and chemical communication is one of the key components. The success of reproduction relies on chemical communication favored by the steroid pheromones from boar saliva. These steroids were proven to be involved in advancing puberty in gilts (the boar effect) and in promoting estrus behaviors in gilts/sows, thereby helping to detect estrus and facilitating the timing of artificial insemination. The steroid pheromones bound with carrier proteins are evidenced in the mandibular (submandibular) salivary secretions of the

Identification of Brucella spp. in feral swine (Sus scrofa) at abattoirs in Texas, USA.

Various tissues, nasal swabs, urine and blood samples were collected from 376 feral swine at two federally inspected abattoirs in Texas during six separate sampling periods in 2015. Samples were tested for Brucella spp. by culture and serology. Brucella spp. were cultured from 13.0% of feral swine, and antibodies were detected in 9.8%. Only 32.7% of culture-positive feral swine were also antibody positive, and 43.2% of antibody-positive feral swine were culture positive. Approximately, the same number of males (14.0%) and females (12.1%) were culture positive, and slightly more males (10.5%) t

Evidence of leptospirosis in the kidneys and serum of feral swine (Sus scrofa) in the United States.

Leptospirosis is the most widespread zoonosis in humans worldwide. In the United States, widespread detection of antibodies to leptospirosis have been identified in feral swine (Sus scrofa) with the highest detection of serovars, Bratislava, Icterohaemorrhagiae, and Pomona. Over the past few years, feral swine populations have expanded their geographical range and distribution in the United States with reports in at least 39 of 50 states. Since feral swine serve as reservoirs for serovars that can infect humans, it is important to understand the risk of transmission. In order to learn more abo

Seasonality of reproduction in wild boar (Sus scrofa) assessed by fecal and plasmatic steroids.

The collection of biological samples through non-invasive techniques represents one way of monitoring in vivo physiological changes associated with reproductive activity. Such techniques are particularly important for the study of animal species in the wild. The goals of this study were 1) to evaluate fecal progestogen (P), estrogen (E), and androgen (A) by means of radioimmunoassays, in male and female wild boars culled in the Piedmont, Italy area; 2) to compare them with plasmatic concentrations and the animals' reproductive status; and 3) to assess variations in reproductive seasonality bet
