Identification of carbon dioxide flux drivers in a High Arctic tundra environment.

We analysed the carbon dioxide fluxes from vegetation, measured by portable flux chambers, and several meteo-climatic and environmental variables obtained during six summer campaigns at two different sites in the High-Arctic tundra in the Bayelva basin near Ny Ålesund, Svalbard, during the period 2019-2025. The two sites have similar climatic conditions and vegetation cover, in terms of species distribution and abundance, but different distance from the glaciers. The measured fluxes provided information on Net Ecosystem Exchange (NEE), Ecosystem Respiration (ER) and Gross Primary Production (G

Exploring near-optimal energy systems with stakeholders: A novel approach for participatory modeling.

Including local populations in energy transition planning can increase its legitimacy, socio-political feasibility, and, in turn, climate mitigation efficacy. Comprehensive stakeholder involvement in participatory modeling facilitates learning; however, the choice of options and scenarios in the model can be opaque to participants. Here, we present a framework in which stakeholders engage with near-optimal modeling results holistically and showcase our methodology in a case study of the remote Arctic settlement of Longyearbyen, Svalbard. Participants choose across a continuum of modeling-based

Seasonal variation in accumulation of persistent organic pollutants in an Arctic marine benthic food web.

The aim of the present study was to investigate seasonal variation in persistent organic pollutant (POP) concentrations, as well as food-web biomagnification, in an Arctic, benthic marine community. Macrozoobenthos, demersal fish and common eiders were collected both inside and outside of Kongsfjorden, Svalbard, during May, July and October 2007. The samples were analysed for a selection of legacy chlorinated POPs. Overall, low levels of POPs were measured in all samples. Although POP levels and accumulation patterns showed some seasonal variation, the magnitude and direction of change was not

Spatial trends and associated biological responses of organochlorines and brominated flame retardants in hatchlings of north Atlantic kittiwakes (Rissa tridactyla).

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs), such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), some organochlorinated pesticides (OCPs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD), were analyzed in yolk sacs of kittiwake (Rissa tridactyla) hatchlings from Kongsfjorden at Svalbard (Norwegian Arctic; 79 degrees N) and from Runde, an island on the coast of Norway (62 degrees N). Retinol (vitamin A), retinyl palmitate, and alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E) were measured in plasma and liver of the hatchlings to examine whether these vitamins were associated with the POPs. Higher levels o

Characterization of known and novel clinically important antibiotic resistance genes and novel microbes from wastewater-impacted high Arctic fjord sediments.

Arctic microbiota is enigmatic and highly underexplored. With the aim of understanding the resistome and microbiota of high-Arctic fjord sediments and the effect of wastewater discharge on sediment microbiota, we analyzed sediments from Advent fjord in Svalbard using metagenomics. We show the presence of 888 clinically relevant antibiotic resistance genes including genes coding resistance against last-resort antibiotics such as carbapenems, colistin, vancomycin, linezolid and tigecycline in the sediment microbiota. Using computational models, 478 novel β-lactamases belonging to 217 novel β-lac

"They can smell the 'short-termness' on you". Student learning and sense of belonging in the Arctic.

BACKGROUND: Student well-being is recognized as central to academic success, yet little is known about how extreme, isolated learning environments may shape this relationship. PURPOSE: To explore student's and staff's perception of student well-being and learning at the University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS), focusing on the Arctic context. METHODS: We used a qualitative, exploratory design, conducting semi structured interviews and focus groups with students and staff at UNIS. RESULTS: We identified four themes: Arctic isolation, nature as the learning environment, belonging and identity, an

Accumulation of vitamin A in the hepatic stellate cell of arctic top predators.

We performed a systematic characterization of the hepatic vitamin A storage in mammals and birds of the Svalbard Archipelago and Greenland. The liver of top predators, including polar bear, Arctic fox, bearded seal, and glaucous gull, contained about 10-20 times more vitamin A than the liver of all other arctic animals studied, as well as their genetically related continental top predators. The values are also high compared to normal human and experimental animals like mouse and rat. This massive amount of hepatic vitamin A was located in large autofluorescent lipid droplets in hepatic stellat

Keeping the clock set under the midnight sun: diurnal periodicity and synchrony of avian Isospora parasites cycle in the High Arctic.

For Isospora (Protozoa: Eimeriidae) parasites of passerine birds, diurnal periodicity of oocyst output is a well-described phenomenon. From the temporal zone to the tropics, oocyst production is correlated with the light-dark cycle, peaking in the afternoon hours. However, nothing is known about the existence of diurnal periodicity of these parasites in the birds of High Arctic environments, under permanent light during summer. We sampled free-ranging Snow Bunting (Aves: Passeriformes), on Svalbard in summer and tested oocysts output of Isospora plectrophenaxia. Here we show that under the per

Recombinant transthyretin purification and competitive binding with organohalogen compounds in two gull species (Larus argentatus and Larus hyperboreus).

Glaucous gulls (Larus hyperboreus) from Svalbard, Norway (marine), and herring gulls (Larus argentatus) from the Laurentian Great Lakes (freshwater) of North America are differentially exposed to persistent and bioaccumulative anthropogenic contaminants, such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) flame retardants and metabolic products. Such compounds can potentially perturb hormone transport via binding interactions with proteins such as transthyretin (TTR, prealbumin). In this present study, we isolated, cloned and sequenced TTR cDNA from the brain and

Human exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) via the consumption of fish leads to exceedance of safety thresholds.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) receive global attention due to their adverse effects on human health and the environment. Fish consumption is a major source of human PFAS exposure. The aim of this work was to address the lack of harmonization within legislations (in the EU and the USA) and highlight the level of PFAS in fish exposed to pollution from diffuse sources in the context of current safety thresholds. A non-exhaustive literature review was carried out to obtain PFAS concentrations in wild fish from the Norwegian mainland, Svalbard, the Netherlands, the USA, as well as sea

Dissemination of multidrug resistant bacteria to the polar environment - Role of the longest migratory bird Arctic tern (Sterna paradisaea).

The ever-increasing prevalence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria(ARB), primarily due to the frequent use and misuse of antibiotics, is an issue of serious global concern. Migratory birds have a significant role in dissemination of ARB, as they acquire resistant bacteria from reservoirs and transport them to other environments which are relatively less influenced by anthropogenically. We have investigated the prevalence of ARB in a long-distance migratory bird, the Arctic tern (Sterna paradisaea) captured from the Svalbard Archipelago. The birds were tagged with geolocators to track their extrao

Evidence of Brucella infection in marine mammals in the North Atlantic Ocean.

Between 1983 and 1996 a total of 1386 samples of serum were taken from four species of seal and three species of whale in the waters west of Iceland, the area of pack-ice north-west of Jan Mayen, the northern coast of Norway and the Kola Peninsula, the waters west of Svalbard, and the Barents Sea; they were tested for the presence of anti-Brucella antibodies with an indirect ELISA (protein G conjugate). The positive sera were re-tested with classical brucellosis serological tests, such as the serum agglutination test, the EDTA-modified serum agglutination test, the Rose Bengal test, and the co

Phenotypes Associated with Pathogenicity: Their Expression in Arctic Fungal Isolates.

Around 85% of the environments on Earth are permanently or seasonally colder than 5 °C. Among those, the poles constitute unique biomes, which harbor a broad variety of microbial life, including an abundance of fungi. Many fungi have an outstanding ability to withstand extreme conditions and play vital ecosystem roles of decomposers as well as obligate or facultative symbionts of many other organisms. Due to their dispersal capabilities, microorganisms from cryosphere samples can be distributed around the world. Such dispersal involves both species with undefined pathogenicity and potentially

Methylmercury biomagnification in an Arctic pelagic food web.

Mercury (Hg) is a toxic element that enters the biosphere from natural and anthropogenic sources, and emitted gaseous Hg enters the Arctic from lower latitudes by long-range transport. In aquatic systems, anoxic conditions favor the bacterial transformation of inorganic Hg to methylmercury (MeHg), which has a greater potential for bioaccumulation than inorganic Hg and is the most toxic form of Hg. The main objective of the present study was to quantify the biomagnification of MeHg in a marine pelagic food web, comprising species of zooplankton, fish, and seabirds, from the Kongsfjorden system

To breed or not to breed: endocrine response to mercury contamination by an Arctic seabird.

Mercury, a ubiquitous toxic element, is known to alter expression of sex steroids and to impair reproduction across vertebrates but the mechanisms underlying these effects are not clearly identified. We examined whether contamination by mercury predicts the probability to skip reproduction in black-legged kittiwakes (Rissa tridactyla) from Svalbard. We also manipulated the endocrine system to investigate the mechanism underlying this relationship. During the pre-laying period, we injected exogenous GnRH (gonadotropin-releasing hormone) to test the ability of the pituitary to release luteinizin

Preparation protocol for epifluorescence microscopy when working close to the detection limit.

Working with low density, low biomass material can be challenging, especially when working near the detection limit. Although background contamination is a universal consideration in microbiological research, its impact is increased when the cells under assessment approach the same concentration as the background contamination. The aim of this work was to identify and remove laboratory sources of background contamination in the cell mounting process for epifluorescence microscopy to improve the reliability of cell counting for low biomass samples. Microscope slides and coverslips were assessed

Global quantification and distribution of antibiotic resistance genes in oceans and seas: Anthropogenic impacts and regional variability.

The global spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the marine environment poses a significant threat to public health and natural ecosystems. This study quantified and analysed the distribution and co-occurrence patterns of ARGs in a wide range of oceans and high seas, including the Atlantic, Arctic and Indian Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea and the Persian Gulf. Focusing on beta-lactamases (blaOXA-48, blaCTX-M-1 group, and blaTEM), sulfonamides (sul1) and tetracycline (tetA), our results showed that sul1 was ubiquitous, indicating widespread dissemination. Notably, the Mediterranean Sea

Challenging the phylogenetic relationships among Echinococcus multilocularis isolates from main endemic areas.

Alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is a rare but severe disease that affects more than 18,000 people worldwide per year. The complete sequencing of the mitochondrial genome of Echinococcus multilocularis has made it possible to study the genetic diversity of the parasite and its spatial and temporal evolution. We amplified the whole mitochondrial genome by PCR, using one uniplex and two multiplex reactions to cover the 13,738 bp of the mitogenome, and then sequenced the amplicons with Illumina technology. In total, 113 samples from Europe, Asia, the Arctic and North America were analyzed. Three majo

Deciphering the Cold Adaptive Mechanisms in Pseudomonas psychrophila MTCC12324 Isolated from the Arctic at 79° N.

Psychrophiles, host of cold environments, have been successfully undergoing the process of evolution by which they have acquired innate adaptations to withstand the unfavorable effects of low temperature. Psychrophiles renders immense opportunity to explore the underlying mechanisms of cold adaptation. The present study focused to explore the cold adaptive mechanisms of Pseudomonas psychrophila MTCC12324, a facultative psychrophilic bacterium isolated from the Ny-Alesund, an island in the Svalbard Archipelago (79°55' N, 11°56' E) in the Arctic. Whole genome sequencing of P. psychrophila MTCC12
