Persistent infection is a rare sequel following infection of pigs with swine vesicular disease virus.

Nine isolates from pigs persistently infected with a recent Italian isolate of swine vesicular disease (SVD) virus, ITL/9/93, were collected sequentially over 121 days and were characterized antigenically and biochemically. There was an accumulation of amino acid (aa) substitutions in the capsid proteins throughout the carrier state that could be correlated with alterations in antigenicity in virus isolates collected late stage in infection. The aa substitutions detected mainly occurred in VPI and antigenic changes were detected in late isolates both at antigenic site 1, resulting in loss of b

Effects of quaternary ammonium compounds with 0.1% sodium hydroxide on swine vesicular disease virus.

The effects of quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) with sodium hydroxide on swine vesicular disease virus (SVDV), an enterovirus were studied. Didecyldimethylammonium chloride (DDAC) with 0.1% NaOH showed a stronger effect against SVDV than other QACs with 0.1% NaOH. The effect of DDAC with 0.1% NaOH was strong at 40 degrees C. DDAC was effective against SVDV at pH values around 11.0, but not in the distilled water control. The effect of DDAC with 0.1% NaOH was already observed at 1 min after mixing of the DDAC with SVDV. Observation under an electron microscopy revealed that the probable mec

Platelet adhesion to damaged coronary arteries: Comparison in normal and von Willebrand disease swine.

The early response to coronary artery injury was investigated in normal swine and in swine with von Willebrand disease (vWD). Thirty minutes after coronary endothelial denudation, a monolayer of platelets was adherent to areas of simple injury in both bleeder and normal swine. The number of adherent platelets was not significantly different in the two phenotypes. Injury involving the media of the vessel produced platelet-fibrin thrombi. Platelet activation, as judged by pseudopod formation and platelet spreading over areas of simple injury, was significantly less in bleeder animals than in nor

[Production and testing of a live lyophilized bivalent vaccine against Aujeszky's disease and erysipelas in swine].

A live freeze-dried bivaccine against swine erysipelas and Aujeszky's disease in pigs was produced, its antigen titers reaching 10(8) and 10(4.67) for the two components, respectively. The immunity conferred to the vaccinated pigs (so far as Aujeszky's disease is concerned) had an antibody titer of 1:4, and in sheep the titer was up to 1:16, these animals showing resistance at a control infection with 5000 LD50 per head. The vaccinated pigs likewise withstood a control infection with a mixed 24-48-hour broth culture of virulent strains causing swine erysipelas.

Swine vesicular disease: virological studies of experimental infections produced by the England-72 virus.

Pigs exposed to relatively small amounts of virus by intradermal inoculation of the feet or by skin sacrification developed clinical disease. Large amounts of virus were recovered from samples taken from the nose, mouth, pharynx, rectum and the prepuce or vagina during the first week of infection and smaller amounts during the second week. Virus was recovered from the faeces of most animals 16 days after infection and from one animal for 23 days. Pigs in contact with inoculated animals were killed at intervals before the appearance of clinical disease. The distribution and amounts of virus in

Multi-network comparison of between-farm contacts for infectious disease surveillance in swine production.

Understanding how swine farms are interconnected, directly and indirectly, is essential to characterizing infectious disease transmission. This study aimed to describe the connectivity of swine farms across 11 network types, including vehicle movements (i.e., trucks and trailers), animal movements, and distance-based farm-to-farm contacts, to identify links among production types and farms likely to be consistently characterized as super-spreaders. Network edges represented vehicle movements, pig movements, and farm-to-farm contacts within a 10 km radius. Truck and trailer movement networks we

Identification, genotyping, and genomic comparison of Streptococcus porcinus isolated from diseased swine in Brazil.

INTRODUCTION: Streptococcus porcinus is considered a zoonotic opportunistic pathogen for several animal species, including swine, and can cause systemic clinical conditions. There are morphological similarities between streptococcal species, leading to possible incorrect diagnosis and inappropriate treatment choice. Here, we describe the identification, and genotypic and genomic characterization of S. porcinus isolated from 5 adult sick pigs from Minas Gerais and São Paulo (Brazil) between 2010-2017. METHODOLOGY: Streptococcus spp. strains were isolated from vaginal discharge, joint abscess,

Serotyping and Antimicrobial Susceptibility Profiling of Glaesserella parasuis Isolated from Diseased Swine in Brazil.

Glaesserella parasuis is one of the major pathogens in swine intensive production systems. To date, 15 serovars have been described, and the prevalence of these serotypes in different geographical regions has been identified by several methods. G. parasuis outbreaks could be controlled with vaccination if it were not for serovar diversity and limited cross-serovar protection; consequently, antibiotic therapy continues to be necessary for infection control. Here, we present the isolation, identification, serotyping, and antibiotic susceptibility profiling of G. parasuis from diseased swine in B

Legionnaires' disease mimicking swine influenza (H1N1) pneumonia during the "herald wave" of the pandemic.

BACKGROUND: New York area hospitals were hit hard by the swine influenza (H1N1) pandemic in spring and summer 2009. During a pandemic, the initial cases may be difficult to recognize, but subsequent clinical diagnoses were relatively straightforward, given the high volume of cases and their typical clinical presentation. Swine influenza pneumonia presents as an influenza-like illness (ILI) with dry cough, fever >102 degrees F and myalgias. A variety of other viral pneumonias, eg, cytomegalovirus, human parainfluenza virus 3 (HPIV 3), and adenovirus, as well as bacterial community-acquired pneu

Prevalence of classical swine fever, Aujeszky's disease and brucellosis in a population of wild boar in Switzerland.

During two survey rounds of a national surveillance system for infectious diseases in wild boar in Switzerland, each lasting four months from November to February, between 2001 and 2003, 1949 blood samples and 62 tissue samples from the spleen and 50 from the reproductive organs were collected from hunted wild boar. The survey was designed so that freedom from infection could be detected with a probability of 95 per cent at a threshold prevalence of less than 1 per cent for classical swine fever and Aujeszky's disease and less than 1.5 per cent for brucellosis. There was no serological evidenc

First outbreak of respiratory disease associated with swine influenza H1N2 virus in pigs in Korea.

This report describes the first diagnosis of swine influenza H1N2 virus infection in growing pigs in Korea by virus isolation, reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), histopathology, and in situ hybridization. The subtype of swine influenza virus isolates was determined to be H1N2 by RT-PCR. The most consistent and predominant histological feature was bronchointerstitial pneumonia. Lung tissues from these pigs were hybridized with the nonradioactive digoxigenin-labeled complementary DNA (cDNA) probe from H1 HA and N2 NA genes but not from H3 HA and N1 NA genes. A strong hybri

Classical swine fever in The Netherlands 1997-1998: a description of organisation and measures to eradicate the disease.

The central and regional organisation of the campaign to eradicate the CSF epidemic in The Netherlands in 1997/1998 is described. The main instruments used in the campaign were based on stamping-out and movement restrictions specified by the European Union. Additional instruments were used for the first time, namely, pre-emptive culling of contact and neighbouring farms, compartmentalisation of transport, monthly serological screening in established surveillance areas and supervised repopulation of all farms in the former surveillance zone. Two other measures, the killing of very young piglets

Swine dysentery. Comparison of experimental diseases produced by infection with colonic mucosa or with Treponema hyodysenteriae, French strains, and of "natural" disease.

Oral inoculation of colonic mucosa scrapings and intestinal contents of animals affected with swine dysentery, or of pathogenic strains of Treponemia hyodysenteriae, as well as spontaneous contamination in infected pens caused in average swine dysentery to appear in 359 out of 409 SPF piglets. The morbidity is high irrespective of the method of contamination: after pen contamination, 75 out of 83 piglets were dysenteric; after only one ingestion of contaminated matter, 265 out of 280 animals were ill; and after inoculation of T. hyodysenteriae, 25 out of 35. Mortality in dysentery was always h

Transboundary Animal Diseases (TADs) affecting domestic and wild African ungulates: African swine fever, foot and mouth disease, Rift Valley fever (1996-2018).

Transboundary Animal Diseases (TADs) affecting ungulates are potentially epidemic diseases that are contagious or transmissible, and a concern for humans worldwide. While globalization has led to increased containment efforts at a global scale, additional local attention is needed as well for vulnerable pastoralist communities that are in close proximity to livestock. We reviewed and then summarized outbreaks, cases, and deaths for 3 TADs (African Swine Fever (ASF), Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD), and Rift Valley Fever (RVF)) affecting domestic and wild ungulates for all African countries from 1

Rapid clinical diagnosis of Legionnaires' disease during the "herald wave" of the swine influenza (H1N1) pandemic: the Legionnaires' disease triad.

BACKGROUND: In adults hospitalized with atypical community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), Legionnaires' disease is not uncommon. Legionnaire's disease can be differentiated from typical CAPs and from other atypical CAPs based on its characteristic pattern of extrapulmonary organ involvement. The first clinically useful diagnostic weighted point score system for the clinical diagnosis of Legionnaires' disease was developed by the Infectious Disease Division at Winthrop-University Hospital in the 1980s. It has proven to be diagnostically accurate and useful for more than two decades, but was time-con

Genomic insights into diversity, antimicrobial resistance and virulence of Glaesserella parasuis from diseased swine in Peru.

Glaesserella parasuis is an important bacterial pathogen and the etiological agent of Glässer's disease, which causes substantial economic losses on swine farms worldwide. Although large scale genome studies have been carried out in the North hemisphere, few genomes from South America are available limiting our knowledge of the full genetic diversity of this bacteria. In this study, seventeen clinical G. parasuis isolates from diseased swine in Peru where whole genome sequenced and compared with publicly available genomes. We identified seven distinct sequence types and five serotypes being mo

Efficacy of bacterial vaccines to prevent respiratory disease in swine: a systematic review and network meta-analysis.

A systematic review and network meta-analysis (MA) was conducted to address the question, 'What is the efficacy of bacterial vaccines to prevent respiratory disease in swine?' Four electronic databases and the grey literature were searched to identify clinical trials in healthy swine where at least one intervention arm was a commercially available vaccine for one or more bacterial pathogens associated with respiratory disease in swine, including Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae, Actinobacillus pleuropneumonia, Actinobacillus suis, Bordetella bronchiseptica, Pasteurella multocida, Stretococcus suis, Ha

The Bordetella bronchiseptica type III secretion system is required for persistence and disease severity but not transmission in swine.

Bordetella bronchiseptica is pervasive in swine populations and plays multiple roles in respiratory disease. Most studies addressing virulence factors of B. bronchiseptica utilize isolates derived from hosts other than pigs in conjunction with rodent infection models. Based on previous in vivo mouse studies, we hypothesized that the B. bronchiseptica type III secretion system (T3SS) would be required for maximal disease severity and persistence in the swine lower respiratory tract. To examine the contribution of the T3SS to the pathogenesis of B. bronchiseptica in swine, we compared the abilit

Phylogeography of swine influenza H3N2 in the United States: translational public health for zoonotic disease surveillance.

The field of phylogeography has received a lot of attention for its application to molecular evolution and geographic migration of species. More recent work has included infectious diseases especially zoonotic RNA viruses like influenza and rabies. Phylogeography of viruses has the potential to advance surveillance at agencies such as public health departments, agriculture departments, and wildlife agencies. However, little is known about how these agencies could use phylogeography for applied surveillance and the integration of animal and human sequence data. Here, we highlight its potential
