This study determined whether electrical stimulation (ES) of the baroreceptor afferent fibers in the aortic depressor nerve (ADN) produces hindlimb vasodilation in pentobarbital-anesthetized rats via the release of nitric oxide (NO)-containing (nitrosyl) factors from NO synthase-positive lumbar sympathetic nerve terminals. ES of the ADN (1-10 Hz for 15 s) produced frequency-dependent reductions in mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) and mesenteric and hindlimb vascular resistance (MR and HLR, respectively). The falls in resistance were substantially smaller in hindlimb beds in which the ipsilat

The NET (norepinephrine transporter) is situated in the prejunctional plasma membrane of noradrenergic neurons. It is responsible for >90% of the norepinephrine uptake that is released in the autonomic neuroeffector junction. Inhibitors of this cell membrane transporter, known as norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (NRIs), are commercially available for the treatment of depression and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. These agents increase norepinephrine levels, potentiating its action in preganglionic and postganglionic adrenergic neurons, the latter through activation of α-1 adrenorec

Conventional and immunocytochemical, light- and electron-microscopic studies on the innervation of the pineal gland of the tree shrew (Tupaia glis) were made. Neuropeptide Y (NPY)-immunoreactive fibers, which were abundantly distributed in the gland, disappeared almost completely after superior cervical ganglionectomy, suggesting that these fibers are mostly postganglionic sympathetic fibers. By contrast, tyrosine hydroxylase (TH)-immunoreactive fibers, which were less numerous than NPY-fibers, remained in considerable numbers in ganglionectomized animals, indicating the innervation of TH-posi

PURPOSE: Cutaneous sympathetic pathophysiology in complex regional pain syndrome type 1 (CRPS-1) is not yet completely understood. To evaluate cutaneous sympathetic dysfunction in CRPS-1, we evaluated sympathetic sweat response (SSwR) and skin vasomotor reflex (SkVR) in CRPS-1 patients.
METHODS: We studied 10 CRPS-1 patients (age 41 ± 13 years; 5 females and 5 males; disease duration 20 ± 22 months) and 10 healthy subjects (age 44 ± 13 years; 3 females and 7 males). SkVRs and SSwRs to several sympathetic activating procedures were recorded on the palms of the CRPS-1 patients (affected side) a

A 9-year-old, spayed female, Airedale Terrier was euthanatized and necropsied after a progressive clinical course that included Horner's syndrome of the left eye and unilateral atrophy of the masticatory muscles. Although gross lesions were limited, a polyradiculoneuritis and ganglionitis that was most severe in the trigeminal nerves and ganglia were confirmed histologically. The inflammatory infiltrate consisted predominantly of macrophages and B and T lymphocytes that were phenotypically confirmed by immunostaining. Horner's syndrome was the result of damage to postganglionic sympathetic fib

Objective: To investigate the sensory and sympathetic innervations associated with both acupoint "Shenshu" (BL23) and kidney in the rat for insight into the neuronal correlation between the Back-Shu Point and its corresponding visceral organ. Methods: The BL23 and kidney were selected as the representative acupoint and visceral organ in this study, in which their local nerve fibers were examined by using double fluorescent immunohistochemistry with calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and tyrosine hydroxylase (TH). Meanwhile, their neuronal correlation in the dorsal root ganglia (DRGs), spin

Sympathetic nervous system responses typically are regionally differentiated, with activation in one outflow sometimes accompanying no change or sympathetic inhibition in another. Regional sympathetic activity is best studied in humans by recording from postganglionic sympathetic efferents (multiunit or single fiber recording) and by isotope dilution-derived measurement of organ-specific norepinephrine release to plasma (regional "norepinephrine spillover"). Evidence assembled in this review indicates that sympathetic nervous system abnormalities are crucial in the development of cardiovascula

The autonomic nervous system is a complex neural network that controls several organ systems. Its assessment includes a detailed history of autonomic functions, clinical examination, and autonomic tests. Most widely used is a battery of tests that assess cardiovascular reflex autonomic and sudomotor tests, which include deep breathing (assesses parasympathetic function), Valsalva maneuver, tilt test (both assess parasympathetic and adrenergic functions), and sudomotor testing for the evaluation of postganglionic sudomotor fibers. These basic tests represent a foundation of autonomic testing. N

A 36-year-old woman had, since the age of 24, numerous episodes of visual loss and spinal symptoms and signs at various levels, and was diagnosed as multiple sclerosis(MS). CSF myelin-basic-protein was increased. Neurological and electrophysiological investigations suggested the peripheral nerve involvement. Sural nerve biopsy performed about six years after the onset, revealed severe loss of both myelinated and unmyelinated fibers. Subsequently, histamine skin reaction was defective in the lower limbs. Tests on sudomotor and pupillary functions indicated deficits of both central and postgangl

This discussion reviews the common causes of Horner's syndrome, with emphasis on case reports from the past several years. Much of the recent literature concerns the use of apraclonidine as a diagnostic test for Horner's syndrome, possibly as an alternative for the current gold standard of cocaine eye drops. This new literature is discussed in the context of the current standards for clinical diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Frey s syndrome or Gustatory sweating was first described by Baillarger in 1853. Lucie Frey had described a patient as "auriculotemporal syndrome" in 1923. The explanation for this symptom has been an aberrant regeneration of postganglionic parasympathetic fibers feeding the parotid gland that are severed during parotidectomy. After parotidectomy, these cholinergic parasympathetic fibers regenerate and anastomosis with postganglionic sympathetic fibers that supply vessel and sweat gland of the skin. According to a recent study, the treatment of Frey's syndrome has no treatment of c

Patients with panic disorder are at increased cardiac risk. While the mechanisms responsible remain unknown, activation of the sympathetic nervous system may be implicated. Using isotope dilution methodology, investigations of whole-body and regional sympathetic nervous activity have failed to show any differences between patients with panic disorder and healthy subjects. Using direct recording of single unit efferent sympathetic vasoconstrictor nerve activity by microneurography we examined sympathetic nervous function in patients with panic disorder more precisely than previously reported. Our previous study demonstrated that oral treatment with simvastatin (SIM) suppressed renal sympathetic nerve activity (RSNA) in the rabbits with chronic heart failure (CHF). The purpose of this experiment was to determine the effects of direct application of SIM to the central nervous system on RSNA and its relevant mechanisms. Experiments were carried out on 21 male New Zealand White rabbits with pacing-induced CHF. The CHF rabbits received infusion of vehicle, SIM, or SIM + N(omega)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester into the lateral cerebral ventricle via osmotic minipump for 7 days. We found t

Parasympathetic nerves of pterygopalatine ganglion origin are considered to enter the orbit and distribute to the nasal mucosa with the anterior ethmoidal nerve. As their distribution has never been demonstrated the present study was undertaken to seek evidence of their passage and to identify their relationship with the ethmoidal nerves. The soft tissues of the pterygopalatine fossa and orbit from sixteen sides of twelve cadavers were removed in one piece and either dissected or cut coronally into slabs and prepared histologically using montages of thin resin-embedded sections at intervals su

1. Teased-fiber recordings were made from the axons of dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons in rats that underwent transection of the sciatic nerve 4-22 days previously. Many of the neurons had spontaneous ectopic discharge originating from within the DRG. 2. When postganglionic sympathetic efferents ending in the DRG were activated by tetanic stimulation of the T13 and L1 ventral roots (VRs), the ongoing afferent discharge was altered in more than one-half of the DRG neurons sampled. In most of the responsive units (62%), activity was augmented by this sympathetic stimulation; in the remainder

BACKGROUND: The surgical management of hyperhidrosis is controversial. Robotic surgical systems with their high-definition magnified 3-dimensional view and increased maneuverability in a confined space may facilitate the technique of selective sympathectomy (ramicotomy). We present a case series of patients undergoing selective postganglionic thoracic sympathectomy using robotic technology.
METHODS: This study is a case series analysis of patients who underwent selective postganglionic thoracic sympathectomy from July 2006 to November 2011. The operation was performed on a video-assisted thor

RATIONALE: After cardiac damage, excessive neurite outgrowth (sympathetic hyperinnervation) can occur, which is related to ventricular arrhythmias/sudden cardiac death. Post-damage reactivation of epicardium causes epicardium-derived cells (EPDCs) to acquire a mesenchymal character, contributing to cardiac regeneration. Whether EPDCs also contribute to cardiac re/hyperinnervation, is unknown.
AIM: To investigate whether mesenchymal EPDCs influence cardiac sympathetic innervation.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Sympathetic ganglia were co-cultured with mesenchymal EPDCs and/or myocardium, and neurite o

Comprised of the sympathetic nervous system, parasympathetic nervous system, and enteric nervous system, the autonomic nervous system (ANS) provides the neural control of all parts of the body except for skeletal muscles. The ANS has the major responsibility to ensure that the physiological integrity of cells, tissues, and organs throughout the entire body is maintained (homeostasis) in the face of perturbations exerted by both the external and internal environments. Many commonly prescribed drugs, over-the-counter drugs, toxins, and toxicants function by altering transmission within the ANS.
