[Characteristics of the functional state of different sections of the autonomic nervous system and their role in the pathogenesis of oligomenorrhea].

Analysis of the clinical picture of oligomenorrhea and of the results of studies of the function of various sections of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) in 58 patients of a reproductive age has revealed differences in these functions, related to the time of menstrual disorders onset. Oligomenorrhea patients with menarche complained of cardiovascular, respiratory, and emotional-motivational disorders, examinations have revealed in them dysfunctional disorders and reduced reserve potentials of both ANS sections. In oligomenorrhea patients in whom the condition developed at the age of 18-25 aft

Mania: sympathoadrenal function and clinical state.

We investigated sympathoadrenal and sympathetic nervous system activity, catecholamine disposition, and clinical state in 19 hospitalized manic patients. Severity of the core manic syndrome, anxiety, and hostility correlated with 24-hour urinary excretion of epinephrine relative to its metabolites, but only weakly with norepinephrine. Agitation, however, correlated most strongly and significantly with norepinephrine. Eight of the patients had mixed states: concurrent manic and depressive syndromes. There were no differences between mixed and pure manic patients with respect to catecholamine or

ACUTE MENTAL STRESS AND HEMOSTASIS: WHEN PHYSIOLOGY BECOMES VASCULAR HARM.

Stress-induced activation of the sympathoadrenal medullary system activates both the coagulation and fibrinolysis system resulting in net hypercoagulability. The evolutionary interpretation of this physiology is that stress-hypercoagulability protects a healthy organism from excess bleeding should injury occur in fight-or-flight situations. In turn, acute mental stress, negative emotions and psychological trauma also are triggering factors of atherothrombotic events and possibly of venous thromboembolism. Individuals with pre-existent atherosclerosis and impaired endothelial anticoagulant func

[Circadian rhythm of catecholamine excretion, effect of L-DOPA and Nacom in various diseases of the nervous system].

The activity of the sympathoadrenal system (SAS) was studied in 132 patients with central nervous system diseases such as parkinsonism, deforming muscular dystonia (DMD), Huntington's chorea, myopathy and asthenic neurosis. The estimation was based on determinations of urine catecholamine (CA) excretion with the help of the fluorometric method developed by E. Sh. Matlina et. al. (1965). The control group included 50 healthy subjects. The findings obtained confirmed the reported data concerning the role of CA in the pathogenesis of the studied forms of nervous pathology. The study showed a decr

The opioid system in cardiac and vascular regulation of normal and hypertensive states.

The endogenous opioid system includes three major families of peptides: dynorphins (derived from pre-proenkephalin B), endorphins (derived from pre-proopiomelanocortin), and enkephalins (derived from pre-proenkephalin A). Multiple species of opioid peptides are derived from these major precursors and many of them possess potent cardiovascular properties. Opioid peptides and opioid receptors, of which multiple forms have been defined, are present in the central nervous system and peripheral neural elements. In the central nervous system, opioid peptides and receptors are found in forebrain and

Autonomic mediation of glucagon secretion during insulin-induced hypoglycemia in rhesus monkeys.

Autonomic activation mediates the majority of the increase of glucagon secretion during insulin-induced hypoglycemia in several species including dogs, mice, and rats. However, the role of the autonomic nervous system to increase glucagon during hypoglycemia in humans remains controversial, and investigations in nonhuman primates have not been previously conducted. The autonomic contribution to glucagon secretion during hypoglycemia in a nonhuman primate was examined by two independent pharmacological approaches. Glucagon responses to clamped insulin-induced hypoglycemia were compared in consc

Expression of a serotonin-gated ion channel in embryonic neural and nonneural tissues.

The neurotransmitter serotonin (5HT) has been implicated in morphogenesis of central nervous system and craniofacial structures. The actions of serotonin are mediated by multiple receptor subtypes, one of which, the 5HT3 receptor, is a ligand-gated ion channel. To determine whether this channel may contribute to the proposed morphogenic actions of serotonin, the expression of 5HT3 receptor transcripts was examined during mouse embryogenesis and correlated with the distribution of serotonin transporter mRNA and serotonin immunoreactivity. The pattern of 5HT3 receptor mRNA expression within the

[Heart and thyroid].

Thyroid hormones may exert cardiovascular actions by direct effects on the myocardium, by interacting with the sympathetic nervous system and through alterations of the peripheral circulation. Then, thyroid hormones increase myocardial contractility and relaxation, sensitise the myocardium to sympathetic nervous system and decrease arterial resistance. Hyperthyroidism results in an enhanced myocardial contractility, an increased cardiac output and a fall in systemic vascular resistance. Nevertheless "high output" cardiac decompensation may occur. Thyrotoxicosis may trigger arrythmia and diseas

Heart rate variability in kittens during early postnatal ontogeny.

Heart rate variability in awake kittens under resting conditions was studied during the following periods of postnatal ontogeny: newborn animals, 10-day-old animals (eye opening), 20-day-old animals (rise on the legs), and 30-day-old animals (control). Newborn animals were characterized by high activity of the sympathoadrenal system due to birth stress. The effect of stress factors increased in 10-day-old kittens, which was related to the start of functioning of distant receptors and delivery of new environmental information into the brain. The acquisition of upright posture and locomotion on

[Percutaneous embolization and ultrasound scissors for removal of a carotid body tumor].

Paragangliomas are highly vascularized usually benign neoplasms originating from the sympathoadrenal and parasympathetic paraganglia of the autonomic nervous system. When resectable, the management of these tumors consists of surgical ablation preceded by transarterial embolization. The aim of this article is to describe a novel treatment strategy combining intralesional percutaneous embolization with dissection using ultrasound scissors. The case of a 74-year-old women presenting with a Shamblin type III carotid body paraganglioma is presented. The combined approach of percutaneous embolizati

[Birth-related stress and postpartum adaptation of newborn infants after cesarean section].

The mechanisms of fetal and newborn adaptation to extrauterine life after normal and abdominal delivery were under study. Laboratory and instrumental methods were employed to examine the status of the intrauterine fetus and the clinical picture of the newborn adaptation in the early neonatal period: radioimmunoassays of dopamine, noradrenaline, adrenaline were carried out in fetuses and newborns after normal delivery and after cesarean section performed before and in labor. The results evidence that the adaptation shifts develop later in the newborns after cesarean section performed before lab

Neural control of islet function by norepinephrine and sympathetic neuropeptides.

It is clear that the sympathoadrenal system has a role in the regulation of endocrine pancreatic function and that the sympathetic nerves of the pancreas can change pancreatic hormone secretion to increase the availability of metabolic fuels. It seems likely that the classical sympathetic neurotransmitter, NE, acts in concert with peptide co-transmitters, such as galanin and NPY. Each is released during the stimulation of pancreatic sympathetic nerves and each is capable of influencing either islet function or pancreatic blood flow. There is considerable indirect evidence that the sympathetic

Humoral factors in the etiopathogenesis of arterial hypertension.

On the basis of a critical analysis of the literature and of his own results, the author submits a survey of the role of humoral factors in the etiopathogenesis of the various types of arterial hypertension. The role of pressor and depressor factors in the pathogenesis of hypertension must be comprehended in close association with the other, non-humoral mechanism of blood pressure regulation. Hypertension can develop as a result of hyperactivity of one or more factors of pressor systems, including the sympathoadrenal system, the renin-angiotensin system and mineralocorticoids, or of reduced ac

Diabetes-induced biochemical changes in central and peripheral catecholaminergic systems.

A great variety of alterations have been described in the nervous system of diabetic animals. They are named as diabetic neuropathy and affect the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves. In diabetic animals, plasma and tissue catecholamine levels have been reported to be increased, decreased or unchanged, and these disparities have been explained by differences in the tissues selected, severity or duration of diabetes. Dopamine, norepinephrine and epinephrine from different tissues were extracted by absorption onto alumina, and measured by high performance liquid chromatography with electroc

The influence of anesthesia on endotoxin shock patterns in the rat was examined. Blood pressure, heart rate, arterial blood gases, glucose, lactate, and pathology of the small intestine were measured before and after endotoxin (40 mg/kg) challenge in male Sprague-Dawley rats. The three groups studied were: (1) enflurane anesthetized (N = 10), (2) ketamine anesthetized (N = 10), and (3) awake and unrestrained (N = 13). Measurements were made during 30 min prior to endotoxin injection (IV) and for 240 min afterward. Reflex tachycardia, which occurred in the awake group simultaneously with the in

Obstructive sleep apnea, cardiovascular disease, and inflammation--is NF-kappaB the key?

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) affects a large portion of the population and is associated with repeated airway collapse leading to chronic intermittent hypoxia, exaggerated swings in intrathoracic pressure and post apneic arousal. OSA is associated with heightened sympathoadrenal tone and is a risk factor for cardiovascular mortality and morbidity. In addition to well-known mechanical and autonomic effects, OSA appears to be associated with systemic inflammation. This could provide one mechanism leading to cardiovascular disease (CVD). A central factor in the inflammatory cascade is nuclear fa
