Confronting the HIV, Tuberculosis, Addiction, and Incarceration Syndemic in Southeast Asia: Lessons Learned from Malaysia.

Throughout Southeast Asia, repressive drug laws have resulted in high rates of imprisonment in people who inject drugs (PWID) and people living with HIV (PLH), greatly magnifying the harm associated with HIV, tuberculosis, and addiction. We review findings from Malaysia's largest prison to describe the negative synergistic effects of HIV, tuberculosis, addiction, and incarceration that contribute to a 'perfect storm' of events challenging public and personal health and offer insights into innovative strategies to control these converging epidemics. The majority of PLH who are imprisoned in Mal

Rethinking tuberculosis and human immunodeficiency virus as a syndemic: Implications for global prevention and care.

Tuberculosis remains the leading infectious cause of death among people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). An estimated 10.7 million people developed tuberculosis worldwide in 2024, including 619,000 people living with HIV, while tuberculosis caused an estimated 150,000 deaths among people living with HIV. The two epidemics are better understood as a syndemic than as a co-infection because they concentrate in the same populations, interact biologically, and share adverse social conditions. Evidence indicates that integrating tuberculosis and HIV services shortens the time to antir

The COVID-19 syndemic: a perfect storm for the life expectancy of the most disadvantaged Americans.

BACKGROUND: To explore the syndemic nature of the COVID-19 pandemic by identifying which subpopulations in the United States (US) suffered the greatest losses in life expectancy (LE) in 2020 and 2021, and to which extent these losses can be attributed to COVID-19 and 'other' causes of death. METHODS: We analysed individual death records for 2018-2021 from the National Vital Statistics System and population counts from the American Community Survey. Life table and continuous change decomposition analyses were used to quantify cause-/.specific contributions to changes in LE over time in populat

Understanding the opioid syndemic in North Carolina: A novel approach to modeling and identifying factors.

The opioid epidemic is a significant public health challenge in North Carolina, but limited data restrict our understanding of its complexity. Examining trends and relationships among different outcomes believed to reflect opioid misuse provides an alternative perspective to understand the opioid epidemic. We use a Bayesian dynamic spatial factor model to capture the interrelated dynamics within six different county-level outcomes, such as illicit opioid overdose deaths, emergency department visits related to drug overdose, treatment counts for opioid use disorder, patients receiving prescript

Beyond the Syndemic of Opioid Use Disorders and HIV: The Impact of Opioids on Viral Reservoirs.

People with HIV are more likely to have opioid use disorder and to be prescribed opioids for chronic pain than the general population; however, the effects of opioids on the immune system and HIV persistence have not been fully elucidated. Opioids may affect HIV reservoirs during their establishment, maintenance, and reactivation by enhancing HIV infectivity and replication due to upregulation of co-receptors and impairment of innate antiviral responses. Opioids may also modulate immune cell functioning and microbial translocation and can reverse viral latency. In this review, we summarize the

Association of syndemic conditions and quality of life among people living with HIV/AIDS.

The syndemics theory seeks to understand the effect of multiple synergic problems in promoting poor health outcomes. To disentangle which and how syndemic conditions affect the quality of life (QoL) may be important to improve well-being of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). This study evaluates the association between syndemic conditions and QoL among PLWHA. We performed a secondary analysis using data obtained between 2014 and 2017 among PLWHA under care in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The outcomes were the six QoL domains (physical, psychological, level of independence, social relationships, e

Syndemics of Sexually Transmitted Infections in a Sample of Racially Diverse Pregnant Young Women.

INTRODUCTION: Syndemic theory posits that poor health outcomes co-occur and amplify each other in the context of harmful conditions that must be addressed simultaneously to improve health equity. This analysis identifies perinatal syndemic factors and examine how factors are related to STI in a sample of racially diverse young pregnant women. METHODS: Pregnant participants (n = 61) ages 14-21 from racially diverse backgrounds were recruited from a prenatal clinic for an ongoing longitudinal study between October 2019-February 2020. Participants completed a tablet survey assessing pregnancy in

Maternal HIV and syphilis are not syndemic in Brazil: Hot spot analysis of the two epidemics.

While the annual incidence of HIV diagnosis in pregnancy in Brazil remains relatively stable, rates of maternal syphilis increased over six-fold in the past decade. We hypothesized that maternal HIV and syphilis are two distinct epidemics. Data on all cases of maternal HIV or syphilis detected in pregnancy between January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2018 were requested from the Brazilian Ministry of Health. In order to evaluate how the epidemics evolved over the time period, ArcGIS software was used to generate spatiotemporal maps of annual rates of detection of maternal HIV and syphilis in 2010 a

Doubling Syndemics: Ethnographic Accounts of the Health Situation of Homeless Romanian Roma in Copenhagen.

This study investigates health concerns and access to health services for Roma from Romania who live in homelessness in Copenhagen, Denmark. They collect refundable bottles and call themselves "badocari," which in Romanian refers to "people who work with bottles." Homeless Roma in Denmark have not previously been studied through ethnographic research. The study stresses the importance of a syndemic approach towards understanding badocari health concerns. Syndemics is understood as co-occurring diseases, which unfold within contexts of social injustice. The case of the badocari is argued to be

Syndemics of syphilis, HCV infection, and methamphetamine use along the east coast of China.

BACKGROUND: An upsurge in club drug use has been observed in recent years in some cities of China, especially methamphetamine, which is quickly replacing heroin to become the most widespread drug across the nation. This study investigated the type of drugs used, syphilis and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and the correlates for syphilis, HCV and unprotected commercial sex behavior among drug users in two cities along the east coast of China. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey conducted in 2010 provided demographics, sexual and drug use behaviors, HIV knowledge and the utilization of interve

Low socioeconomic status, insulin resistance, asthma, and depression: A syndemic framework in Brazilian adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a critical developmental stage during which environmental, metabolic, and psychosocial factors co-occur and may interact, influencing health and creating a syndemic context that remains insufficiently explored. OBJECTIVE: We analyzed a syndemic model, considering socioeconomic determinants and metabolic risk associated with asthma and depression in adolescents. METHODS: This population-based study (n = 2515) utilized data from the RPS Brazilian Consortium Cohorts at follow-up of 18-19 years in São Luís, Brazil. A theoretical model analyzed the association among soc

"Undiagnosed" severe disease pseudo-outbreaks in Sub-Saharan Africa: a paradigm of syndemic events.

Several outbreaks of undiagnosed severe disease occurred in the Democratic Republic of Congo over the last year. Although this is not completely unusual, at least one of them raised an international concern until the determinants of the excess death were identified. Far from representing a real threat for people living in wealthy countries, most of these events are context related, and mainly due to a combination of poverty-related conditions, such as malnutrition, historic plagues like malaria, and vulnerability to common respiratory infections. Even though these syndemic events remain usuall

A syndemic perspective on food insecurity, gestational diabetes, and mental health disorders during pregnancy.

Pregnancy brings numerous physiological and psychosocial changes and conditions that may include gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and anxiety and mood disorders. Household food insecurity (HFI)-not having access to food that meets dietary needs and preferences-may put pregnant people at risk for developing pregnancy complications like GDM. This study used qualitative and quantitative methods to understand, from a syndemic perspective, the intersections among these conditions in Canada. Using the Canadian Community Health Survey cycles from 2009 to 2018, we fit multivariable and multivariate

Suicide related ideation and behavior among Canadian gay and bisexual men: a syndemic analysis.

BACKGROUND: While several studies have demonstrated that gay and bisexual men are at increased risk of suicide less attention has been given to the processes that generate the inherent inequity with the mainstream population. This study tested whether syndemic theory can explain the excess suicide burden in a sample of Canadian gay and bisexual men. Syndemic theory accounts for co-occurring and mutually reinforcing epidemics suffered by vulnerable groups due to the effects of social marginalization. METHODS: This study used data from Sex Now 2011, a cross-sectional survey of Canadian gay and

Integrating mathematical modelling and artificial intelligence to combat emerging viral syndemics: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Global health security is increasingly threatened by emerging viral syndemics, where infectious viruses interact synergistically with socio-economic-structural vulnerabilities. Traditional reactive surveillance is increasingly insufficient to address the complexity of these interconnected crises. This systematic review aims to synthesize evidence for the "Silicon Shield," a proactive computational framework integrating mathematical modelling and artificial intelligence (AI) to bridge a unified computational framework, and critical literature gaps for pandemic preparedness and respo

Exploring the Syndemic of Steatotic Liver Disease, Socioeconomic Inequities and Cancer Risk in the UK Biobank.

BACKGROUND: Steatotic liver disease (SLD), formerly known as fatty liver disease, is associated with increased cancer risk. However, the impact of socioeconomic inequities remains understudied. This study investigates the relationship between SLD, socioeconomic position (SEP) and cancer risk using a syndemic framework. METHODS: Using UK Biobank data, we defined metabolic dysfunction-associated SLD (MASLD), MASLD with increased alcohol intake (MetALD) and alcoholic liver disease (ALD), based on the Fatty Liver Index, cardiometabolic criteria and alcohol consumption. SEP was derived via latent
