Transglenoidal Approach in Pigmented Villonodular Synovitis of the Temporomandibular Joint.

Pigmented villonodular synovitis is a benign pathology with locally aggressive behavior caused by an uncontrolled proliferation of the articular synovial membranes. Here the authors present a case of pigmented villonodular synovitis of the temporomandibular joint with middle cranial fossa extension and review the different management options including surgery, which have been proposed to target this condition in the recent literature.

Arthroscopic treatment of diffuse pigmented villonodular synovitis of the elbow.

INTRODUCTION: Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is a rare pathology of the elbow, but presents a risk of progression with cartilage destruction. Surgical treatment consists in synovectomy, as complete as possible. Arthroscopy is an excellent tool for the exploration and treatment of intra-articular lesions in the elbow, but the results in PVNS of the elbow have never been evaluated. The aim of this study was to assess the recurrence rate of PVNS of the elbow after arthroscopic synovectomy, and secondarily to assess pain, joint range of motion, functional scores and complication rate. Surgical management of villonodular-pigmented synovitis of knee: decisional algorithm.

Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) of knee is an uncommon disease defined as benign despite presenting local aggressiveness and high propensity to recurrence. Etiology is still not completely understood. It seems to be a chronic inflammation process involving synovial membranes characterized by hemosiderin deposition which leads to pain, limitation of range of motion and, if not treated, bone erosion and osteoarthritis of knee. The gold standard for treatment is surgical excision; other adjuvant or alternative therapies are described, too. We present a case series of PVNS of the knee trea

Computed Tomography Findings of Pigmented Villonodular Synovitis in a Dog.

Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is a rare benign and usually monoarticular neoplastic lesion arising from the synovium, bursae and tendon sheaths in humans, horses and dogs. Categorization for PVNS in humans includes localized and diffuse forms of PVNS and tenosynovial giant cell tumour (TGCT), although histologically they are the same. The localized form is characterized by discrete nodular lesions, the diffuse form is often intra-articular, infiltrative, affecting the entire synovium with more aggressive behaviour and TGCT occurs along tendon sheaths. Computed tomography (CT) of PVNS

Localized pigmented villonodular synovitis of posterior compartment of the knee.

Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is an uncommon entity involving articular or extra-articular tissues and maybe localized or diffuse in extent. The knee is by far the commonest joint to get involved. Localized PVNS of the knee can occur in any location but its confinement to the posterior compartment is infrequent. We present our experience of managing localized posterior compartment PVNS of the knee. There were 10 patients (7 males and 3 females) with average age of 33 years. These patients had symptoms of pain, locking, or swelling for a mean of 13.9 years before diagnosis. All the pa

Pigmented Villonodular Synovitis of the Temporomandibular Joint: A Unique Presentation.

Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is a rare and benign proliferative disorder of synovium with potentially locally aggressive growth and invasion of the bone. Occurring within the joints, tendon sheaths, and bursae, it is most commonly a monoarticular disease affecting large joints. In particular, most cases of PVNS occur in the knee. PVNS of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a highly rare disorder, with approximately 60 cases reported. Herein, we present a unique case of an elderly male presenting with ear pain and subsequently diagnosed with PVNS of the TMJ with a history of trauma

Pigmented Villonodular Synovitis of the Knee Joint: A Case Report.

Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is a rare, benign, but potentially locally aggressive and recurrent condition characterized by synovial proliferation and hemosiderin deposition inside the joints, tendon sheaths, and bursae. It usually affects the large joints such as hip, knee, and ankle. We report a case of PVNS of the knee joint in a young female which was treated by subtotal synovectomy alone without the use of adjuvants. At the 14-month follow-up, the patient was pain free and had no signs of disease recurrence.

Osteonecrosis of the femoral head associated with pigmented villonodular synovitis.

A 23-year-old Japanese woman with no history of corticosteroid intake or alcohol abuse presented with a 10-month history of left hip pain without any antecedent trauma. An anteroposterior radiograph performed 10 months after the onset of pain showed slight joint space narrowing and bone erosions surrounded by sclerotic lesions in both the acetabular roof and femoral neck. Magnetic resonance images of the left hip showed a feature of osteonecrosis of the femoral head and a mass with villus proliferation extending from the posterior intertrochanteric area to the anteromedial aspect of the femora

Pigmented villonodular synovitis developing in a patient with rheumatoid arthritis.

A 56-year-old man developed pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) 3 years after he was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). He had been successfully treated with methotrexate, leflunomide, sulfadiazine, and intra-articular knee injection of etanercept (tumor necrosis factor α inhibitor) in 2010. He stopped all drugs for arthritis 1 year later for disease remission. He was readmitted for right knee pain and swelling in 2013, when the magnetic resonance imaging and arthroscopy of the right knee indicated PVNS. Following surgical resection, the patient was doing well after 1 year. This rar

Pigmented villonodular synovitis after TKA associated with tibial component loosening.

There is no known causal link between total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS). There also is no known relationship between PVNS and implant loosening after TKA in the literature. This article presents a case of PVNS in a patient undergoing revision TKA for tibial component loosening. A 74-year-old woman who had undergone cemented bilateral TKA 5 years earlier presented with painful swelling in her right knee. At the time of the primary TKA, no abnormal signs were found in the synovial membrane. Routine follow-up radiographs did not indicate implant loosening.

Tuberculous arthritis of the knee joint mimicking pigmented villonodular synovitis.

UNLABELLED: Tuberculous arthritis is difficult to diagnose early because of its atypical insidious clinical manifestations and non-specific imaging findings. Specifically, monoarticular tuberculosis of the knee may mimic pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS). The present report describes a young patient with tuberculous arthritis of the knee. Proper diagnosis was delayed due to magnetic resonance imaging findings, such as hemosiderin deposits and a nodular mass around the knee joint, suggesting the diffuse type of PVNS. These findings suggest that the first step in the diagnosis of tuberculo
