Syringe exchange, injecting and intranasal drug use.

OBJECTIVE: To assess trends in injecting and non-injecting drug use after implementation of large-scale syringe exchange in New York City. The belief that implementation of syringe exchange will lead to increased drug injecting has been a persistent argument against syringe exchange. METHODS: Administrative data on route of administration for primary drug of abuse among patients entering the Beth Israel methadone maintenance program from 1995 to 2007. Approximately 2000 patients enter the program each year. RESULTS: During and after the period of large-scale implementation of syringe exchang

Digital subtraction dacryocystography and syringing in the management of epiphora.

AIM: To compare the diagnostic information provided by digital subtraction dacryocystography (DCG) and syringing of the nasolacrimal system in patients with epiphora. METHODS: Twenty-five lacrimal systems of 17 patients, who presented with unilateral or bilateral epiphora and no concurrent ocular or lid abnormality, were prospectively entered into the study. The patients initially underwent syringing by a lacrimal specialist followed by DCG. RESULTS: Anatomical obstructions were detected in 88% of systems with syringing and in 84% with DCG. The anatomical sites of obstruction varied between

Effectiveness of needle/syringe exchange program in Tbilisi.

IDUs are under the high risk of HIV and other blood born diseases. In Georgia injecting drug use is associated with two third of registered HIV/AIDS cases. Majority of them are also infected with B and C Hepatitis. One of the main components of HIV/AIDS prevention among drug users is considered to be harm reduction programs, among them syringe exchange program. We conducted observational cohort study and performed interviewing participants of syringe exchange program using structured questionnaire. The interviewing was conducted at intake, after 3 months and at the end of the program. During i

Thinking ethically about needle and syringe programs.

Accepting-for the sake of argument-our current legal policies concerning heroin use and its users, what ethical questions are raised for needle and syringe program (NSPs)? Do they weaken drug laws, send the wrong message or obscure the right message, do little to eliminate the harm of drugs, detract from alternatives, and/or constitute a counsel of despair? I suggest that in the absence of established better alternatives, NSPs constitute a morally acceptable and in some cases even desirable option despite the continued criminalization of injecting drug use. Yet they must be conceived and admin

Syringe and needle exchange programs: Part I.

Syringe and needle exchange (SANE) programs appear to be a pragmatic approach to reducing the rising incidence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection among intravenous drug users (IVDUs). One purported indication of the effectiveness of SANE programs is lower prevalence rates of cases of AIDS or of HIV seropositivity in cities with SANE programs than in cities without such programs. In each positive comparison cited, however, the lower levels of HIV seropositivity were already present before the establishment of SANE programs. A second indicator of SANE effectiveness is a reduction in

The syringe nitroxide free radical--Part II.

Some plastic syringes introduce a nitroxide free radical into the fluids they contain. The EPR spectrum shows a triplet with aN = 17.0 +/- 0.1 G in plasma. We report here that this nitroxide/hydroxylamine couple serves as an antioxidant system, whose redox potential appears to be between that of vitamin C and vitamin E. This adventitious antioxidant can alter the course of free radical processes.

Comparison between the double-syringe and the single-syringe techniques of adenosine administration for terminating supraventricular tachycardia: A pilot, randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Adenosine has been recommended as a first-line treatment for stable supraventricular tachycardia (SVT). Standard guidelines recommend 6-mg of adenosine administered intravenously (IV) with an immediate 20-ml IV bolus of normal saline solution (NSS; double syringe technique [DST]). However, a newly proposed single-syringe technique (SST), in which adenosine is diluted with an up to 20 ml IV bolus of NSS, was found to be beneficial. HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesized that the SST was noninferior to the DST for terminating stable SVT. METHODS: A pilot multicenter, single-blind, randomized

Greater drug injecting risk for HIV, HBV, and HCV infection in a city where syringe exchange and pharmacy syringe distribution are illegal.

Comparing drug-injecting risk between cities that differ in the legality of sterile syringe distribution for injection drug use provides a natural experiment to assess the efficacy of legalizing sterile syringe distribution as a structural intervention to prevent human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and other parenterally transmitted infections among injection drug users (IDUs). This study compares the parenteral risk for HIV and hepatitis B (HBV) and C (HCV) infection among IDUs in Newark, NJ, USA, where syringe distribution programs were illegal during the period when data were collected, and

The Financial and Environmental Cost of Anaesthetic Emergency Drugs: Comparing Ampoules With Prefilled Syringes.

Introduction Anaesthetic emergency drugs are essential for safe practice; however, when prepared from ampoules, they are frequently wasted when unused. Prefilled syringes (PFS) may reduce waste as they can be opened at the point of use. Additional benefits may include reducing medication errors and saving clinician time, although higher initial purchasing costs have been a barrier to universal adoption across the NHS. We undertook two quality improvement cycles to quantify the use and waste of anaesthetic emergency drugs before and after transitioning from ampoules to PFS for metaraminol, ephe

Contamination on inner walls of syringes used for compounding and administration of hazardous drugs.

PurposeThe aim of the study was to measure contamination on inner walls of syringes used for compounding hazardous drugs. As the syringes have an open connection to the environment, evaporation of the drugs could result in environmental contamination and potential exposure of healthcare workers.MethodsForty-three 50 mL BD Plastipak luer lock syringes were collected after single use in compounding hazardous drugs. The inner wall of the barrel was wiped for each syringe. Potential remaining contamination was also measured by liquid extraction to verify the effectiveness of the wiping procedure.

Detected substance abuse among injecting drug users through analysis of used syringes in Tunisia.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Injecting drug use poses significant public health risks due to unsafe practices such as syringe sharing, reuse, and risky sexual behaviors, which increase the transmission of bloodborne viruses. In Tunisia, limited data on injecting drug use hinders the development of informed health and harm reduction policies. METHODS: A syringe collection campaign was conducted in Tunis in November 2022. The used syringes were provided by the Tunisian Association for Information and Orientation on AIDS and Addiction (ATIOST), a harm-reduction service. These syringes had been distribut

The Impact of a Shortage of Pharmacy-Prepared Ephedrine Syringes on Intraoperative Medication Use.

BACKGROUND: Anesthesia-related medication shortages have become increasingly common in the United States. We tested whether a local shortage of pharmacy-prepared ephedrine syringes, replaced by provider-prepared ephedrine, was associated with provider-level changes in ephedrine and phenylephrine use and patient-level changes in intraoperative hemodynamics. METHODS: Consecutive patients undergoing general and orthopedic surgery at a tertiary care center were included 1 month before and 1 month after the start of the pharmacy-prepared ephedrine syringe shortage. Lowest mean arterial blood press

Pressure generated by syringes: implications for hydrodissection and injection of dense connective tissue lesions.

OBJECTIVE: Hydrodissection and high-pressure injection are important for the treatment of dense connective tissue lesions including rheumatoid nodules, Dupuytren's contracture, and trigger finger. The present study determined the optimal syringes for high-pressure injection of dense connective tissue lesions. METHODS: Different sizes (1, 3, 5, 10, 20, and 60 mL) of a mechanical syringe (reciprocating procedure device) with a luer-lock fitting were studied. Twenty operators generated maximum pressure with each mechanical syringe size, and pressure was measured in pounds per square inch (psi).

Disposal of syringes, needles, and lancets used by diabetic patients in North East Essex.

To investigate community disposal of contaminated sharps by insulin-treated diabetes mellitus patients, we surveyed 144 patients. Twenty-three (16.0%) were non-contactable, leaving a study sample of 121, of whom 102 (84.3%) responded. Among the respondents 93.1% used lancets and 97.1% needles; 70.6% used lancets once or twice a day and 65.7% used needles twice a day. The majority said they had received no information on safe disposal of sharps. Of those recalling advice, most received it from diabetes nurse specialists. The majority of needle users used needle clippers and/or sharps bins for d

Analysis of hydroxyzine hydrochloride, meperidine hydrochloride and atropine sulfate in glass and plastic syringes.

The apparent stability of combinations of hydroxyzine hydrochloride and meperidine hydrochloride (50 mg/2 ml each) and of these two drugs (50 mg/2.5 ml each) and atropine sulfate (0.4 mg/2.5 ml) in prefilled glass and plastic syringes was studied. Syringes (3 ml) containing the combinations were stored at 25 C and 3 C for 10 days and analyzed at specific time intervals. Absorption spectra, chromatographic characteristics and pH were determined in addition to visual inspection. Results of these qualitative tests indicated that the mixtures apparently were stable for 10 days at room temperature
