The evidence that links structural racism to disparities in infant mortality across racial groups needs closer examination, given its central role in achieving health equity. We undertook a systematic review using four databases (MEDLINE, Academic Search Complete, APA PsycInfo, and SocINDEX) to determine whether structural racism is associated with infant mortality rates (IMR). The review used the PRISMA guidelines. Relevant articles between 1955 and 2024 were included. A narrative synthesis was conducted informed by critical race theory. Data quality was assessed using the Critical Appraisal

Racism that unjustly marginalizes black people in the United States is not a new concept. It underlies nearly every aspect of American history, leading to the systemic racism that is ingrained in our society today. With the recurrent theme of people of color having worse health outcomes than the majority community, it is important for hand surgeons to employ cultural competence and antiracist education to provide better care and support for patients, staff, students, and colleagues. In this article, we will provide a definitional framework, clinical examples, and practical pearls to promote ch

Prior to a fall semester graduate course in public health, students are encouraged to complete a summer reading assignment based on a book chosen from a curated list of popular literature relevant to public health concepts. From 2020 to 2024, this assignment enabled students to explore the history of structural and systemic racism in the United States and its impacts on current public health policy and programs. Themes from these books are woven into class discussions and further explored in subsequent course assignments. This paper describes the assignment and shares responses from the 1,141

Background: The sexual and reproductive health of African American women has been compromised due to multiple experiences of racism, including discriminatory healthcare practices from slavery through the post-Civil Rights era. However, studies rarely consider how the historical underpinnings of racism negatively influence the present-day health outcomes of African American women. Although some improvements to ensure equitable healthcare have been made, these historical influences provide an unexplored context for illuminating present-day epidemiology of sexual and reproductive health dispariti

AIM: This paper will examine racism's role in calculating fracture risk via the use of race- and ethnicity-based calculations and offer guidance for nurses to mitigate the risk of further exacerbating race-based inequities in fracture care.
BACKGROUND: Using race adjustments in fracture risk calculation, such as in the FRAX, reflects the history of systemic racism in nursing and medicine, particularly in screening for and treating osteoporosis. Osteoporosis-related fractures, which result in increased costs, disability, and death, are a public health problem.

PURPOSE: Black communities face high rates of unmanaged pain due to anti-Black racism in the healthcare system. However, a gap currently exists in the understanding of how anti-Black racism impacts pain management conversations (ie where a pain management plan is discussed with a healthcare professional) with youth in Canada. The purpose of this study was to gain a rich understanding of the experiences of anti-Black racism in a group of Black youth and their caregivers who had pain management conversations with healthcare professionals.

BACKGROUND: Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are a measure of childhood toxic stress that have a dose-dependent relationship with many adult health outcomes. While ACEs have been validated across diverse populations to measure neglect, abuse, and family dysfunction, they do not specifically assess trauma related to racism/xenophobia and immigration. 54% of Latinx youth in the United States are immigrants or children of immigrants and a large group with potentially unmeasured trauma. This study looks beyond ACEs to identify adverse and protective factors for healthy development among Latinx

The phenomena of father's absence and the disruption of a family unit due to social justice issues like incarceration and mental health/substance misuse challenges are widely documented, and their effects on the whole family are well established in the literature. This paper specifically examines how systemic inequities like racism contribute to destructive entitlements that can occur transgenerationally within families affected by father's absence. The consideration of racial trauma is crucial, as father's absence and family disruption are not limited to any one racial or ethnic group, but th

BACKGROUND: Lipid dysregulation is a major contributor to cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk and is attributed to numerous biological, psychosocial, and behavioral risk factors. Psychological stress has been examined as a predictor of lipid dysregulation; however, the role of coping with perceived racism, a stressor unique to the African American experience, has not been addressed. The current study sought to determine the impact of behavioral coping responses to perceived racism and perceived daily stress on lipid levels in African Americans.
METHODS: The sample consisted of 122 African Ameri

Structural racism is a fundamental cause of racial health inequities; however, it is a complex construct that is difficult to quantitatively analyze due to its multi-dimensionality. We classified fifty US states into three typologies of structural racism using a latent profile analysis. Five domains of structural racism were included in the analysis: Black-White inequities in educational attainment, employment, homeownership, incarceration, and income. In separate analyses, we specified two, four, and five typologies and describe how states' groupings changed when different numbers of typologi

OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between structural racism and labor neuraxial analgesia use.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study analyzed 2017 U.S. natality data for non-Hispanic Black and White birthing people. The exposure was a multidimensional structural racism index measured in the county of the delivery hospital. It was calculated as the mean of three Black-White inequity ratios (ratios for lower education, unemployment, and incarceration in jails) and categorized into terciles, with the third tercile corresponding to high structural racism. The outcome was the labor neuraxial anal

Substantial health disparities exist across race/ethnicity in the USA, with Black Americans often most affected. The current COVID-19 pandemic is no different. While there have been ample studies describing racial disparities in COVID-19 outcomes, relatively few have established an empirical link between these disparities and structural racism. Such empirical analyses are critically important to help defuse "victim-blaming" narratives about why minority communities have been badly hit by COVID-19. In this paper, we explore the empirical link between structural racism and disparities in county-

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic was disruptive to birthing individuals' peripartum experiences. This study examined associations between interpersonal racism experiences, pandemic worries, and mental health of Asian and Non-Hispanic white birthing individuals receiving prenatal care in a large northeastern healthcare system.
METHODS: The sample (N=122; Age, M = 33.6, SD = 3.73) was n=61 Asian and n=61 white individuals who were propensity matched on age at childbirth, gestational age, relationship status, income, and educational attainment. Participants completed self-report surveys on di

Black, Latinx, and Indigenous people in the United States experience a disproportionate burden of asthma and atopic dermatitis. The study of these disease disparities has focused on proximal socioenvironmental exposures and on the biomechanistic (including genetic) differences between racial and ethnic groups. Although biomedical research in allergy and immunology stands to benefit from the inclusion of diverse study populations, the narrow focus on biologic mechanisms disregards the complexity of interactions across biologic and structural factors, including the effects of structural racism.

Firearm carriage poses a significant public health challenge, especially for youth (ages 14-24) living in predominantly Black communities that endured racial and economic segregation. Structural racism is a determinant of fatal and nonfatal firearm assaults, but the influence of structural racism on youth firearm carriage has received limited attention. Our study examines whether community violence exposure mediates the association between racialized economic segregation and youth firearm carriage. We analyzed data among 599 youths who sought emergency care and reported drug use within the pas

Families of color in the United States experience homelessness at a disproportionately higher rate than White families; however, little is known about how scholars account for race and ethnicity in family homelessness research. This scoping review analyzes how researchers examine race and ethnicity in conceptual frameworks, methods, and analysis. Following PRISMA-ScR reporting standards, I searched PubMed, PsycINFO, Scopus, and ERIC for quantitative studies including a housing outcome for homeless service-involved families. I used Covidence to screen for inclusion and extract data, and QuADS t

OBJECTIVES: Psychosocial factors of trauma and abuse, racial discrimination, HIV stigma, and gender-related stressors (e.g., prioritizing others' needs) have been associated with antiretroviral treatment (ART) nonadherence and poor viral suppression among Black women living with HIV (BWLWH). To inform the development of an intervention addressing these psychosocial factors to improve ART adherence, the authors sought the insight of BWLWH.
METHOD: Qualitative semistructured interviews were conducted with 30 BWLWH to gather information on their experiences with trauma, racism, HIV stigma, gende

Several recent studies have investigated the mental health consequences of structural racism. Structural racism has been defined as "macro-level societal conditions that limit opportunities, resources, and well-being of less privileged groups on the basis of race/ethnicity and/or other statuses, including but not limited to, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability status, social class or socioeconomic status (SES), religion, geographic residence, national origin, immigration status, limited English proficiency, physical characteristics, or health conditions."1 Researchers have hypothes

Background: Nearly 75% of Black non-Hispanic babies born in 2016 ever breastfed. However, Black mothers still experience barriers to breastfeeding, perpetuating disparities in exclusivity and duration. Subjects and Methods: Using data collected from five focus groups with Black mothers (N = 30) in Washington, District of Columbia during summer 2019, we critically examine the influence of institutionalized and personally mediated racism on breastfeeding. We also explore the counter-narratives Black women use to resist oppression and deal with these barriers. Results: Themes surrounding institut
