Traditional Medicinal Plants Used for Cancer Treatment in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Systematic Review.

Cancer represents one of the major public health issues in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), with increasing incidence and mortality rates as a result of late diagnosis, limited healthcare infrastructure, and financial difficulties. Traditional medicine plays an important role in healthcare across different populations in SSA, as more than 80% of the population depend on indigenous plant-based remedies for treating or managing different ailments, including cancer. This study aimed to document medicinal plants traditionally used to treat cancer in SSA. A systematic search of all documents available in

Hepatoprotective Evidence for the Individual Ingredients of a Standardized Sri Lankan Polyherbal Formulation: A Scoping Review.

Chronic liver disease is a major global health burden and is increasingly driven by metabolic dysfunction, oxidative stress, inflammation, and fibrosis. Conventional therapy and lifestyle modification often achieve suboptimal adherence and incomplete reversal of hepatic injury, which has intensified interest in adjunctive hepatoprotective agents of botanical origin. A standardized Sri Lankan polyherbal formulation (LivosBEE™), combining Osbeckia octandra, Tamarindus indica, Piper nigrum, Piper longum, Cinnamomum verum, and multifloral bee honey, is traditionally used in the management of jaund

Laryngopharyngeal reflux disease: a pilot study with a new multicomponent.

BACKGROUND: This prospective observational study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of a new multicomponent medical device containing Gingigel Pro®, sodium alginate, Tamarindus indica, hyaluronic acid, and vegetal extracts in patients with laryngopharyngeal reflux disease (LPRD). METHODS: Twenty-two adult patients (13 females, 9 males; mean age: 49.9 years) with a clinical diagnosis of LPRD (R-RSI ≥18 and RSA >14) were enrolled. All patients were treated with the device (one stick twice daily for 2 months) and received standardized behavioral and dietary counseling. Assessments were pe

Safety and efficacy of a class II medical device based on highly purified and standardized plant extracts in the management of post-menopausal patients with vulvar and vaginal atrophy: a single-center prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Despite the gold standard treatment for genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM) is based on the use of local or systemic estrogen-containing products, the typical long-term side effects of hormonal treatments and, most importantly, the contraindications in patients with history of breast and endometrial neoplasms do limit in some extent its use. As hyaluronic acid and some highly purified botanicals have clearly demonstrated their anti-inflammatory and mucosa-protecting properties, we have tested, in women with GSM, a class II vaginal medical device containing hyaluronate gel and

Establishing the tolerability and performance of tamarind seed polysaccharide (TSP) in treating dry eye syndrome: results of a clinical study.

BACKGROUND: One of the problems arising from available preparations for dry eye syndrome is the limited residence time of products on the ocular surface. In this paper, we look at an innovative new treatment for dry eye, tamarind seed polysaccharide (TSP). TSP possesses mucomimetic, mucoadhesive and pseudoplastic properties. The 'mucin-like' molecular structure of TSP is similar to corneal and conjunctival mucin 1 (MUC1), a transmembrane glycoprotein thought to play an essential role in protecting and wetting the corneal surface and may explain its increased retention on the eye surface. Brine shrimp toxicity and antimalarial activity of some plants traditionally used in treatment of malaria in Msambweni district of Kenya.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: In Kenya, most people especially in rural areas use traditional medicine and medicinal plants to treat many diseases including malaria. Malaria is of national concern in Kenya, in view of development of resistant strains of Plasmodium falciparum to drugs especially chloroquine, which had been effective and affordable. There is need for alternative and affordable therapy. Many antimalarial drugs have been derived from medicinal plants and this is evident from the reported antiplasmodial activity. AIM OF THE STUDY: The present study reports on the in vivo antimal

Larch arabinogalactan for dry eye protection and treatment of corneal lesions: investigations in rabbits.

PURPOSE: The aim of the present study was to investigate the corneal protective and healing properties of arabinogalactan (AG), a natural polysaccharide present in conifers of the genus Larix (Larch). AG was tested in comparison with other two polysaccharides possessing well-established properties in the treatment of dry eye: tamarind seed polysaccharide and hyaluronic acid. METHODS: The AG formulation was subjected to the following investigations: rheologic measurements; evaluation of mucoadhesive properties by rheologic interaction with mucin; ferning test; and in vivo evaluation on rabbits

Association of erosion with dietary factors among 5-year-old children in India.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the association of dental erosion with dietary factors and oral hygiene practices among 5-year-old schoolchildren in Belgaum, Karnataka, India. METHODS: A random sample of 1,002 5-year-old children was drawn from Belgaum schools. Erosion was assessed using the modified Smith and Knight index. A self-designed questionnaire was used to probe into the details of the children's dietary practices. RESULTS: Frequency of consumption of beverages, canned juices, tamarind, and honey, a mixed diet, and frequency of teeth cleaning were significant pre

Molecular activity of bioactive phytocompounds for inhibiting host cell attachment and membrane fusion interacting with West Nile Virus envelope glycoprotein.

West Nile virus is an arbovirus primarily spread by mosquitoes, which are the principal carriers and belong to the Flaviviridae category. This widespread disease lacks specific treatments despite its potential lethality, urgently demanding novel pharmaceutical research and development aims to prevent severe or long-term complications and improve overall outcomes. Pandemic awareness, increasing global incidence, fatal illness effects, expenses associated with outbreaks, reducing suffering, and other broader implications highlight the study's wider significance. Drug design as a novel treatment

Xyloglucan intake attenuates myocardial injury by inhibiting apoptosis and improving energy metabolism in a rat model of myocardial infarction.

The development of coronary heart disease can be divided into preocclusion and postocclusion steps. We previously showed that cell wall polysaccharides consisting of a high content of arabinose and/or xylose, such as apple pectin, protected against myocardial injury by inhibiting postocclusion steps. We hypothesized that xyloglucan, another apple cell wall polysaccharide that consists of a high content of xylose, might also show myocardial protection. To test the hypothesis, rats were supplemented with either tamarind xyloglucan (TXG) (1, 10, and 100 mg/kg per day) or cotton cellulose (CCL) (1

The Role of Purported Mucoprotectants in Dealing with Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Functional Diarrhea, and Other Chronic Diarrheal Disorders in Adults.

Chronic diarrhea is a frequent presenting symptom, both in primary care medicine and in specialized gastroenterology units. It is estimated that more than 5% of the global population suffers from chronic diarrhea. and that about 40% of these subjects are older than 60 years. The clinician is frequently faced with the need to decide which is the best therapeutic approach for these patients. While the origin of chronic diarrhea is diverse, impairment of intestinal barrier function, dysbiosis. and mucosal micro-inflammation are being increasingly recognized as underlying phenomena characterizing
