STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: The exposed dentin of overdenture abutments can lead to caries. Therefore chemical protection is needed to prevent caries. Considering that dentin contains both organic and inorganic components, reinforcement of both components should give reasonable results. Tannin-fluoride preparation strengthens both the organic and inorganic components of teeth.
PURPOSE: This study examined whether the tannin-fluoride preparation protects noncoping abutments.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty-one subjects aged 36 to 86 years participated in the clinical trial. A trial autopolymerizing re

The effects of increasing concentrations of tannin isolated from cotton bracts and endotoxin prepared from Enterobacter agglomerans on the electrophysiologic and ion transport properties of the canine tracheal epithelium mounted in Ussing chambers were examined. Results were compared with those obtained using cotton bracts extract (CBE). Tannin concentrations in the isolated tannin and in the cotton bracts were analyzed spectrophotometrically. When added to the mucosal bathing solution, tannin produced a significant decrease in transepithelial potential difference and short-circuit current (ls

The effect of aqueous extracts of cotton bract (CBE) on platelet secretion and aggregation was examined by using washed bovine and human platelets. The CBE promoted the release of 75% to 90% of the 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) stored in both human and bovine platelets in a dose-dependent manner. This release reaction occurred without the lysis of the platelets and was not inhibited by indomethacin, 2-deoxyglucose, or KCN. Fractionation of the CBE indicated that the platelet secretagogue present in the CBE was the condensed polyphenol, tannin. In addition to promoting the secretion of 5-HT, tanni

A study was made of the molecular parameters of sensitization of tannin-treated sheep red blood cells with salmonella d-flagellin, depending on the protein dose, exposure, and temperature of the medium; the role played in this process by physical and chemical mechanisms was ascertained, the latter proving to determine the hemosensitization level. Senstivity of the erythrocytic diagnostic agent to the agglutinating action of the specific serum was maximal with a stable binding by a single red blood cell of about 200 000 flagellin molecules, although the limit of stable binding constituted 340 0

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a multifactorial disease characterized by chronic intestinal inflammation and disrupted oxidative balance, significantly impairing patients' quality of life. Tannins, a class of polyphenolic compounds widely distributed in plants, have demonstrated notable therapeutic potential against UC due to their inherent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This study employs a systematic literature review of databases, including PubMed and Web of Science, to investigate the molecular mechanisms by which tannins restore intestinal inflammatory and oxidative homeostasis

Dental caries (DC) is the most common oral pathology. The main bacteria responsible for DC is Streptococcus mutans. One of the strategies that can decrease or eliminate the risk of DC development is using compounds that will inhibit both the growth and virulence factors of S. mutans. Tannins are plant polyphenols that have strong antibacterial activity. The purpose of this study was to assess the antibacterial activity of three tannins against S. mutans. In this investigation, microbiological tests (MIC and MBC) and physicochemical techniques like the fluorescence measurements of tannins' inte

Infections with Cryptosporidium spp. constitute a substantial public health burden and are responsible for widespread production losses in cattle herds. Reducing disease and shedding of Cryptosporidium spp. oocysts is an important One Health goal. There are very few therapeutic options available to treat cryptosporidiosis. Interest in plant bioactive compounds to mitigate the spread of anthelmintic resistance in ruminants has led to investigation of these phytocompounds against other parasitic taxa. Condensed tannins (CTs) are plant secondary metabolites that have shown potential against nemat

The oxidative behavior of five commercial enological tannins of different sources (tea, grape marc, grape seed, untoasted oak, and toasted oak) was investigated in model wine solutions in the presence or absence of SO2. Solutions of the tannins were also analyzed for total phenolics, methyl cellulose precipitable tannins, high-performance liquid chromatography, and linear sweep voltammetry. Tea and oak-derived tannin solutions were characterized by the highest oxygen consumption rates, with oak-derived tannins exhibiting the highest oxygen consumption rates per milligram of phenolic material p

One property of oenological tannins, oxygen reactivity, is commonly exploited in winemaking. The reactivity is mediated by the presence of catalysts (i.e., transition metals and sulfur dioxide) and protects wine against oxidation. This work compares the oxygen consumption rate (OCR) of four commercial oenological tannins (two procyanidins from grape skin and seed, an ellagitannin from oak wood and a gallotannin from gallnut) in a model wine solution and Chianti red wine. All samples were subjected to consecutive cycles of air saturation at 20 °C to increase the total level of oxygen provided.

Tannins are structurally diverse food polyphenols whose behavior cannot be predicted from total tannin content alone. This review uses tannin class, linkage chemistry, degree-of-polymerization metrics, galloylation and hydroxylation, conformational flexibility, and oxidation state as a common framework for interpreting interactions with food proteins, digestive enzymes, starch, plant cell-wall polysaccharides, minerals, and salivary constituents. These descriptors explain differences in digestibility, mineral bioaccessibility, astringency, interfacial behavior, and crosslinking. Many apparentl

The increasing demand for sustainable materials is driving research into the valorization of agro-industrial waste as lignocellulosic alternatives in engineered wood product manufacturing. This study investigates the use of bitter orange (Citrus aurantium L.) peel as a bio-based filler in particleboards bonded with a bio-based tannin/hexamine adhesive. Panels were fabricated by partially substituting wood chips with orange peel powder at five levels (0, 2.5, 5, 10, and 15 wt%), hot-pressed at 180 °C for 8 min at a constant biomass-to-adhesive ratio of 9:1 (w/w). Firstly, the effect of temperat

A composite biosorbent (AC-TFR) prepared by encapsulating tannin-formaldehyde resin (TFR) into calcium alginate (AC) beads was used to remove Cr(VI) from an aqueous solution. Various influencing factors, such as TFR dosage, pH, initial Cr(VI) concentration, contact time, temperature and presence of co-ions in the medium, were investigated. The structures and adsorption performances of the adsorbents were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Tannin, isolated from cotton bracts, inhibits chloride secretion in airway epithelium. In bovine tracheal epithelial cells, tannin (25 micrograms/ml) blunted isoproterenol (Iso)-stimulated adenosine 3',5'-cyclic monophosphate (cAMP) accumulation. Inhibition was time and dose dependent, with 52 +/- 5% (mean +/- SE, n = 6) inhibition at 60 min and 82 +/- 9% (n = 3) inhibition at 8 h. Inhibition was reversible starting at 4 h. Low-molecular-mass tannin (1,000-5,000 Da) had no effect on Iso-stimulated cAMP accumulation, whereas N-acetylcysteine, which interacts with cysteine residues, blocked the

Tannin, isolated from cotton bracts and implicated in the pathogenesis of byssinosis, inhibits isoproterenol and forskolin-stimulated cAMP release from airway cells in part by decreasing cell surface beta-adrenergic receptor number and uncoupling the beta-adrenergic receptor from its stimulatory G-protein (Gs) and in part by inhibiting adenylyl cyclase activity. We have hypothesized that cotton tannin, because of its long polymer length, interacts with the hydrophobic binding pocket of the beta-adrenergic receptor and alters beta-adrenergic receptor binding and Gs coupling. In these studies, t

Terminalia oblongata (yellow wood) is a small deciduous tree growing over an area of central Queensland that supports a large proportion of this state's cattle population. Cattle and sheep that consume yellow wood leaves are poisoned and die. Severe losses of these animals can occur, and this problem is considered the main cause of economic loss to the cattle industry in the area apart from drought. A new toxic condensed tannin, terminalin was isolated from Terminalia oblongata. Its structure was deduced following NMR, IR, UV, MS analyses and in the knowledge that these data show good correlat

Tannins are complex polyphenolic compounds that protect plants from herbivores, pathogens, ultraviolet (UV) stress, etc. There are two main classes of tannins: hydrolyzable tannins (HTs) and condensed tannins (CTs). Tannin biosynthesis is closely linked to intermediates of the shikimate pathway and to the activity of the bifunctional enzyme dehydroquinate dehydratase/shikimate dehydrogenase (DQD/SDH). The biosynthesis of HTs is initiated by the formation of gallic acid catalyzed by SDH, which is subsequently converted into β-glucogallin, as well as tri-, tetra-, and pentagalloylglucoses. Furth

The antioxidant properties of condensed tannins (CTs) are closely related to the mean degree of polymerization (mDP), and CTs with low mDP show stronger antioxidant effects. Therefore, obtaining CTs with a low mDP are very meaningful in improving their antioxidant properties and utilization. In this study, hydroxyl radicals generated by the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide under UV irradiation were used to degrade bayberry tannins in a clean and controllable manner. Taking the formaldehyde reactivity as an index to control the mDP of the degradation product, the changes in antioxidant proper
