Porous Tantalum Tibial Metaphyseal Cones in Revision Total Knee Arthroplasty: Excellent 10-Year Survivorship.

BACKGROUND: Highly porous metal tibial metaphyseal cones (TMCs) are commonly utilized in revision total knee arthroplasty (TKA) to address bone loss and obtain biologic fixation. Mid-term (5 to 10 year) studies have previously demonstrated excellent survivorship and high rates of osseointegration, but longer-term studies are lacking. We aimed to assess long-term (≥ 10 year) implant survivorship, complications, and clinical and radiographic outcomes after revision TKA with TMCs. METHODS: Between 2004 and 2011, 228 revision TKAs utilizing porous tantalum TMCs with stemmed tibial components were

An Evolution of Shoulder Periprosthetic Infections Management: MicroDTTect, Bioactive Glass and Tantalum Cones Employment.

Periprosthetic joint infections of the shoulder (PJIS) are the major cause for revision within the first two post-operative years, and are challenging both to diagnose and treat. Success depends on early identification of microorganisms, appropriate surgical procedures and efficient antibiotic administration. The peculiar microbiology of the shoulder may render the criteria for hip/knee PJI management inappropriate. In addition, later cases with clinically subtle signs often present diagnostic challenges. In recent years, specific issues of PJIS have been managed through the use of new instrum

Tantalum-Doped Co-Cr Alloys: Multiscale Effects on Mechanics, Surface Potential, and Biological Responses.

Cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) alloys are valued in biomedicine for their mechanical performance and relative bioinertness. Here, Co-Cr alloys containing tantalum (Ta; 0, 3, 6, and 9 wt %) were synthesized by electric-arc melting to assess how Ta content influences bulk and surface properties across scales. X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Vickers Microhardness, Wettability, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS), and Atomic Force Microscopy/Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy (AFM/KPFM) were employed. Bioactivity and biocompatibility were evaluated by immersion in simulated

Porous tantalum cage loaded with CGF promotes interbody fusion in a rat XLIF model.

This study addresses the clinical challenge of nonunion in spinal interbody fusion by developing a novel composite implant: a porous tantalum (PTa) cage loaded with concentrated growth factors (CGF). The CGF-PTa cage synergistically combines the mechanical strength and osteoconductivity of chemically vapor-deposited PTa with the sustained release of angiogenic (VEGF) and osteogenic (TGF-β and IGF-1) factors from CGF. Using a rat extreme lateral interbody fusion (XLIF) model, the research systematically evaluates the efficacy of this composite in promoting bone regeneration and spinal fusion. R

Unrecoverable bi-products of drilling titanium alloy and tantalum metal implants: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Trabecular metal implants with a porous architecture that allows for the incorporation of bone into the implant during healing are gaining popularity in alloplastic revision procedures. The bi-products of drilling titanium alloy (Ti) and tantalum (Ta) implants have not been previously assessed. METHODS: Four holes were drilled in each of 2 spatially porous trabecular implants, one Ta and the other Ti alloy (Ti-6Al-7Nb), for this pilot in vitro study. The particles were flushed out with a continuous flow of saline. The particles' weight and the volume were then measured using a Rad

Tantalum trabecular metal implants in anterior cervical corpectomy and fusion: 2-year prospective analysis.

Anterior cervical decompression for two or more cervical spondylotic levels can be performed using either multiple anterior cervical discectomies and fusion or anterior cervical corpectomy and fusion (ACCF). A variety of options for ACCF implants exist but to our knowledge, there is no clinical data for the use of tantalum trabecular metal implants (TTMI) for ACCF. A retrospective review was performed of prospectively collected data for ten patients undergoing ACCF with TTMI between 2011 and 2012. Radiological outcome was assessed by measuring the change in cervical (C) lordosis (fusion Cobb a

3D-printed porous tantalum for acetabular reconstruction in complex primary arthroplasty and revision of hip.

INTRODUCTION: In cases of hip joint damage, such as osteoarthritis (OA), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), avascular necrosis, or hip fractures, total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a critical surgical intervention. For individuals whose hip abnormalities stem from congenital issues, injuries, or previous operations, this procedure can encounter considerable obstacles, including complex bone defects, soft tissue deficiencies, and an increased risk of infections, which may result in poor alignment, joint instability, and higher need for revisions. This study explored the application of personalized, three-

Survivorship analysis and radiographic outcome following tantalum rod insertion for osteonecrosis of the femoral head.

BACKGROUND: For early stages of osteonecrosis, preservation of the femoral head is the primary objective; however, there has not been a consensus on how best to achieve this goal. Core decompression alone is associated with a lack of structural support with inconsistent outcomes, whereas vascularized fibular grafting requires an extensive surgical procedure with high donor-site morbidity and prolonged rehabilitation. The adjunctive use of a porous tantalum implant offers the advantages of core decompression, structural support, minimally invasive surgery, and no donor-site morbidity. The purpo
