Urethral Caruncle in Pediatrics: A Northern Tanzania Experience.

Urethral caruncles are the most frequent benign tumors of the female urethra. Most of them are found in postmenopausal women, and they are rare in childhood. Only a few pediatric cases have been published in the literature. In this report, we present a case series of three pediatric patients with a urethral caruncle.

Schistosomiasis and Human Immunodeficiency Virus in Men in Tanzania.

AbstractSchistosomiasis is a parasitic worm infection that affects over 260 million individuals worldwide. Women with schistosome infections have been demonstrated to have a 4-fold increase in the odds of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection compared with women without schistosome infections. A relationship between schistosome and HIV infections has not been clearly defined in men. Among 674 men aged 18-50 years living in rural Tanzania, we identified 429 (63.6%) who had a schistosome infection as defined by serum positivity for schistosome circulating anodic antigen, visualization of

Cervical cancer: a missed health priority in Tanzania.

Cervical cancer is a malignant neoplasm of the cervix uteri. It is the second commonest cancer in women worldwide and is among the largest causes of global cancer mortality. Human papilloma virus (HPV) which is transmitted sexually, particularly subtypes 16 and 18 are responsible for causing majority of cervical cancer cases worldwide. The disease is one of the most preventable and curable carcinomas if detected and treated at an early enough stage. The effective prevention and control of the disease depends on, among others, the effective screening program coupled with knowledge and awareness

Trypanosomosis prevalence in cattle on Mafia Island (Tanzania).

During two consecutive surveys (February and August/Sept 2002), a total of 970 cattle from the cattle population of Mafia Island (United Republic of Tanzania) were blood-sampled. All blood samples were microscopically screened for the presence of trypanosomes and a portion of these were checked for antibodies with an Ab-ELISA and for the presence of trypanosomal DNA with PCR. Microscopic evidence of trypanosomes of the congolense group (sub-genus Nannomonas) was found in 0.8% of the animals (8/970) and in two cases the species identified was confirmed by PCR as Trypanosoma congolense savannah

Acceptability of azithromycin for the control of trachoma in Northern Tanzania.

Trachoma causes blindness; the prevention strategy includes mass antibiotic treatment. In a community in Northern Tanzania offered mass treatment with azithromycin for the control of trachoma, we used focus group discussions, individual interviews, questionnaires and direct observation to quantify, explore and contextualize reasons for acceptance or refusal of the drug. In the village studied, 76% of the population eligible to receive azithromycin were treated. Uptake was significantly higher among women (79% treated) than men (72%). Factors affecting acceptability included: local prevention n

The molecular epidemiology of Mycobacterium bovis infections in Tanzania.

A molecular epidemiological study to determine the zoonotic importance of bovine tuberculosis was carried out in Tanzania. Specimens from human cases of tuberculosis as well as from slaughtered cattle were collected from regions with a high proportion of extrapulmonary tuberculosis. In order to determine the similarity of strains from the two sources, molecular typing techniques, namely RFLP and spoligotyping, were used to determine the genetic profile of the strains involved. The results of pTBN12 typing of M. bovis from cattle and man has shown a rather heterogeneous population of this speci
