RATIONALE: Tarsal tunnel syndrome (TTS) is a compressive neuropathy of the posterior tibial nerve and its branches. Tarsal coalition is defined as a fibrous, cartilaginous, or osseous bridging of 2 or more tarsal bones. TTS with tarsal coalition is uncommon. Here, we present a rare example of successful surgical management of TTS with posterior facet talocalcaneal coalition.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 74-year-old woman presented with hypoesthesia, numbness, and an intermittent tingling sensation on the plantar area over the right forefoot to the middle foot area. The hypoesthesia and paresthesia of

INTRODUCTION: Congenital tarsal coalition resection in adolescents may be hindered by the complex three-dimensional anatomy of the talocalcaneal joint. Peroperative fluoroscopy is not greatly contributive, especially for talocalcaneal coalition.
HYPOTHESIS: 3D planning and patient-specific instruments facilitate the procedure.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A made-to-measure surgical guide (patient-specific instrument) was used in 9 consecutive patients for tarsal coalition resection (7 talocalcaneal and 2 calcaneonavicular coalitions). The guide was created by 3D modeling from the CT scan of the fo

Congenital tarsal coalition is a diagnosis that is often overlooked in young patients who first present with foot and ankle pain. Calcaneonavicular and talocalcaneal coalitions are encountered most frequently; fusion at other sites is much less common. Tarsal coalitions may be osseous, cartilaginous, or fibrous. Calcaneonavicular coalitions are readily detected on oblique radiographs. Radiographic confirmation of talocalcaneal coalition is more difficult than for fusion at other locations, although several secondary radiographic signs may indirectly suggest the diagnosis. Computed tomography (

Calcaneonavicular (CNC) and talocalcaneal coalitions (TCC) account for most tarsal coalitions. Plain radiographs are typically sufficient to diagnose CNC, while computed tomography (CT) scans are often required to diagnose TCC. The standard of care for all coalitions includes a CT to characterize the coalition and identify additional coalitions. Multiple ipsilateral coalitions are rare and literature on the topic is limited. While the role of routine CT in TCC is well-established, the benefits of routine CT in CNC are less clear. A retrospective review of medical records and plain radiographs

There is a paucity of information on adult coalitions without large, well-designed outcome studies. Current recommendations are thus similar to those for adolescents. Based on the available literature, current recommendations include an initial trial of adequate nonoperative treatment in symptomatic coalitions. Unlike adolescent coalitions, nonoperative treatment may be even more effective in the adult patient as many are asymptomatic or discovered after injury. If nonoperative treatment fails, then surgical intervention is considered and tailored to the location of the coalition, existing adv

INTRODUCTION: The authors report their experience with tarsal coalitions in children. The purpose of this study was to discuss the origins of the << too long anterior process >> of the calcaneum, and to propose a simple therapeutic strategy for diagnosis and treatment.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 47 children (68 feet), with one or more idiopathic tarsal coalitions. All patients had physical examinations to record symptoms, morphology of the foot, mobility of the foot, gait analysis, standard radiographs, and in some cases CT scans or MRI. The average age of the patients was 11.5

BACKGROUND: Surgical resection of persistently painful talocalcaneal tarsal coalitions may not reliably relieve symptoms in patients with large coalitions associated with excessive hindfoot valgus deformity and subtalar posterior facet narrowing. Since 1991, calcaneal lengthening osteotomy, with or without coalition resection, has been used at our institution to relieve symptoms and to preserve motion at the talonavicular and calcaneocuboid joints.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the records for eight patients with thirteen painful talocalcaneal tarsal coalitions who had undergone a calc

BACKGROUND: Excision of pediatric tarsal coalition has been successful in most patients. However, some patients have ongoing pain after coalition excision. This study prospectively assessed patient-based clinical outcomes before and after surgical excision of tarsal coalition, with particular emphasis on comparison to radiologic imaging.
METHODS: We prospectively studied 55 patients who had symptomatic coalition excision for 2 years postoperatively. Patients filled out the modified American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society score, the University of California Los Angeles activity score, and

BACKGROUND: Tarsal coalitions are an important reason for foot pain in children. Early estimates placed the prevalence at up to 2%, while more recent data suggest that it is as high as 11% to 13%. To our knowledge, there have been no population-based studies to determine the true incidence of symptomatic tarsal coalitions in a pediatric population.
METHODS: A population-based database was used to identify all new diagnoses of symptomatic tarsal coalitions in children 18 years old or younger between 1966 and 2018. Patient records were reviewed for clinical data, and comparisons were made betwe

CASE: Tarsal-carpal coalition syndrome (TCCS) is a disorder identified by fusion of the carpals, tarsals, and phalanges of the hands and feet. We describe a case of an 11-year-old girl who has been followed at our outpatient clinic from the age of 8 months.
CONCLUSION: Although patients with TCCS can experience a wide range of symptoms, the primary complaint arises from the foot deformity and associated pain. Using advanced imaging such as 3D computed tomography reconstruction and genetic testing, this report details the clinical, genetic, and radiographic characteristics of the disorder. We

OBJECTIVE: The accessory anterolateral talar facet (AALTF) is a developmental entity described as a potential cause for rigid, painful flat foot. This study evaluates the possible association between the AALTF and other flat foot etiologies, specifically different types of tarsal coalitions.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We evaluated patients with tarsal coalition or sinus tarsi syndrome for an AALTF on CT and MRI. Exclusion criteria included acute ankle trauma, recent surgery, motion or metal artifacts. We evaluated the AALTF length and height, and the lateral talocalcaneal structures for associate

BACKGROUND: Tarsal coalition is the congenital fusion of 2 or more tarsal bones, which can cause pain, restricted motion. Although calcaneonavicular (CN) coalitions have traditionally been reported to be the most common type of tarsal coalition in Western populations, recent East Asian studies have suggested the predominance of talocalcaneal (TC) and naviculocuneiform (NC) coalitions. We hypothesized that TC and NC coalitions are more prevalent than CN coalitions in symptomatic Japanese patients.
METHODS: This multicenter retrospective study included patients diagnosed with symptomatic tarsal

BACKGROUND: Tarsal coalition is an abnormal union between 2 or more tarsal bones that can potentially cause pain, stiffness, and altered foot biomechanics.
CASE REPORT: A 49-year-old man presented to the clinic with chronic dorsal pain in the left foot. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed multiple unilateral nonosseous calcaneonavicular and talocalcaneal coalitions, with associated bone marrow edema. Conservative treatment of the condition, including range-of-motion and strengthening exercises, resulted in gradual improvement.
CONCLUSION: This case underscores the importance of MRI in

BACKGROUND: Talocalcaneal (TCC) and calcaneonavicular (CNC) coalitions are the most common cause of rigid symptomatic flatfoot in children. After resection, calcaneal lengthening osteotomy or arthrodesis are usually reported as second step surgery for correction of the most frequent valgus hindfoot deformity. More recently, coalition resection and minimally invasive subtalar extraarticular screw arthroereisis (SESA) for hindfoot valgus correction in one step have been described. We report the functional mid-term results of patients treated in adolescence with resection and valgus correction wi
