Repair of a Tibiotarsal Fracture in a Pomeranian Goose ( Anser anser) With a Locking Plate.

A 2-year-old Pomeranian goose ( Anser anser) weighing 8.1 kg was examined because of non-weight-bearing lameness of the right limb. A closed, transverse, diaphyseal fracture of the distal third of the right tibiotarsus with a craniolateral displacement of the distal fragment was diagnosed radiographically. Surgery under general anesthesia was performed to repair the fracture with a 14-hole, 2.7-mm locking plate fixed with 6 screws in a bicortical manner. Two days later, the bird was fully weight-bearing on the leg. Radiographs performed 4 and 8 weeks after surgery showed good healing of the af

Angular Limb Deformities: Growth Retardation.

Angular limb deformities are common in foals; however, the importance of the deformity and if treatment is required depend on the degree of deformity relative to normal conformation for stage of growth, the breed and discipline expectations, age, and response to conservative therapies. This article addresses the importance of the foal conformation examination to determine which foals need surgical intervention to correct an angular deformity and when. Techniques for surgical growth retardation include the transphyseal staple, screw and wire transphyseal bridge, and transphyseal screw. Appropri

Small clades at the periphery of passerine morphological space.

Among passerine birds (order Passeriformes), tribe- to family-level clades with five or fewer species are more frequent than one would expect from a homogeneous speciation and extinction process. Previous analyses also suggested that small clades tend to be marginal geographically and/or ecologically. In this study, I use principal component (PC) scores based on eight log-transformed measurements of the wing, tail, leg, and beak to test the hypothesis that small clades (<or=5 species) occupy peripheral positions in morphological space. Species in smaller clades exhibited higher absolute deviat

Feline tarsal tumours: histological spectrum, risk factors and prognostic insights.

ObjectivesTarsal tumours are rare, but previous reports suggest a predilection for round cell tumours (RCTs) and soft tissue sarcomas (STSs) in this region. This study aimed to determine the proportion of RCTs among feline tarsal neoplasms, refine classification through histological revision and immunohistochemistry (IHC), assess potential risk factors and evaluate clinical outcomes based on tumour histotypes.MethodsA retrospective analysis of feline tarsal neoplasms diagnosed between 2010 and 2024 was conducted. Signalment, history, treatment and outcomes were collected for RCTs and STSs. All

Static and dynamic gamma-motor output to ankle flexor muscles during locomotion in the decerebrate cat.

In locomotion, the flexor muscles of the leg are mainly concerned with the relatively constant task of raising the foot, whereas the extensors have the more variable task of support and propulsion at different speeds. This suggests that the way in which the fusimotor system works may differ between the two muscle groups. Observations previously made of the static and dynamic gamma-motor firing patterns in the ankle extensor medial gastrocnemius (MG) have therefore been repeated in the flexor tibialis anterior (TA). One or more single gamma-motor axons, dissected from a small filament of TA ner

Correlation between routine radiographic findings and early racing career in French trotters.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: The relationship between the presence of radiological abnormalities and subsequent racing performance is controversial. However, as training is expensive and time consuming, it would save time and money to identify subjects with osteo-articular lesions not compatible with a normal racing career on the basis of routine radiographic screenings at yearling age. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the impact of osteo-articular lesions on racing ability in French Trotters and identify radiographic changes associated with failure in 'qualification', in order to provide objective c

Canine partial tarsal arthrodesis using laterally applied hybrid locking pancarpal arthrodesis plates: complications and outcome.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the use of hybrid locking pancarpal arthrodesis plates (HLPCAPs) for partial tarsal arthrodesis (parTA) in dogs and document complications and clinical outcome. ANIMALS: Medical records of dogs that underwent parTA between March 2020 and April 2024 were reviewed. Dogs were included if they underwent parTA (performed with a laterally applied HLPCAP). Dogs were excluded if no follow-up could be identified, bilateral approaches were made, or an implant other than a HLPCAP was used as the primary mode of fixation. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: All dogs were presented for hind lim

Arthrodesis for congenital flexural deformity of the metacarpophalangeal and metatarsophalangeal joints.

A llama, a miniature horse, and a miniature donkey with severe bilateral congenital flexural deformities of the metacarpophalangeal and metatarsophalangeal joints were treated successfully by arthrodesis with dynamic compression plating or external skeletal fixation. The flexor tendons were more taut than the suspensory ligaments and were transected. In the llama, the suspensory ligament was transected, and overcorrection caused ischemic necrosis of one distal limb and subluxation of the other fetlock joint. In the horse and donkey, the suspensory ligament was preserved and wedge osteotomy was

Subchondral bone density changes of the talus in dogs with tarsocrural osteochondrosis.

BACKGROUND: Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) and osteochondrosis (OC) are multifactorial developmental joint diseases that can occur in various anatomical locations, including the tarsus of immature, rapidly growing large breed dogs. The pathogenesis of canine OCD and OC involves a disruption in endochondral ossification, resulting in a failure of matrix calcification and vascular invasion. This study aimed to investigate the subchondral bone density changes in Labrador Retrievers with tarsocrural OCD/ OC. RESULTS: A total of 8 dogs with unilateral tarsocrural OCD/ OC were included in the stud

Incidence and characteristics of juvenile tarsocrural osteochondrosis in purebred Angus bulls.

Osteochondrosis (OC) of the bovine tarsus has been suggested to contribute to osteoarthritis. The objective of this prospective cohort study was to provide data specific to the Angus breed. Clinical and radiographic exams evaluating OC lesions, effusion and osteoarthritis were performed in 50 purebred bull calves at three time points between 5.8 and 21 months of age. The likelihood of OC was lower at a median age of 12.4 months (P<0.001), primarily due to resolution of distal talus changes (P<0.01). Significant associations were observed between medial malleolus lesions and effusion at median

Successful wound healing over exposed metal implants using vacuum-assisted wound closure in a dog.

An eight-month-old Labrador retriever was presented with a grade IIIb open shearing injury of the left tarsus. Acute severe surgical site infection developed 2 days after pan-tarsal arthrodesis, resulting in wound dehiscence. Vacuum-assisted wound therapy was carried out for 12 days to treat an extensive full-thickness soft tissue defect with exposure of metal implants. New granulation tissue formation covering most of the defect was achieved by day 10 of this therapy. Epithelialization was achieved by second intention healing with open wound management. To the authors' knowledge, this is the

Does the mechanical milieu associated with high-speed running lead to adaptive changes in diaphyseal growing bone?

Exercise during growth can be important for attaining optimal bone mass. High-intensity long-duration protocols, however, can have detrimental effects on immature bone morphology and mechanics. The underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. Here, we quantified the mechanical environment of the middiaphyseal rooster tarsometatarsus during high-speed running and examined whether short bouts of this exercise-related mechanical milieu can induce positive changes in cortical bone morphology, mechanics, and mineral ash content. At 9 weeks of age, roosters were assigned to controls (n = 9) and runn

Arthrotomy versus arthroscopy and partial synovectomy for treatment of experimentally induced infectious arthritis in horses.

To evaluate the clinical, laboratory, and histologic effects of 2 methods of treatment for infectious arthritis in horses, Staphylococcus aureus (3.4 to 3.9 x 10(3) colony-forming units) was inoculated into the tarsocrural joints of 8 horses on day 0. Each horse was treated with phenylbutazone (2 g, PO, q 24 h) and gentamicin sulfate (2.2 mg/kg of body weight, IV, q 8 h) for 14 days. On day 2, general anesthesia was induced, and each horse had 1 tarsocrural joint treated by arthrotomy, with removal of accessible fibrin and lavage with 3 L of sterile balanced electrolyte solution. Kinematics of phonotactic steering in the walking cricket Gryllus bimaculatus (de Geer).

Female crickets, Gryllus bimaculatus, are attracted by the male calling song and approach singing males; a behaviour known as phonotaxis. Even tethered females walking on a trackball steer towards a computer-generated male song presented from their left or right side. High-speed video analysis showed how this auditory-evoked steering was integrated with walking. Typically all the front and middle legs showed kinematic adjustments during steering, with the trajectories tilted towards the side of acoustic stimulation. Furthermore, the average speed of the tarsi contralateral to song increased re

Adeno-associated virus-mediated delivery of IL-4 prevents collagen-induced arthritis.

Immunomodulation of autoimmune inflammatory diseases like rheumatoid arthritis can be achieved by anti-inflammatory T2 cytokines such as interleukin (IL)-4 administered by gene therapy. In this study we investigated the efficiency of adeno-associated viruses (AAV) vectors in collagen-induced arthritis (CIA). After injection of AAV-LacZ in the tarsus area of mice, the expression of the transgene was localized in the deep muscles cells near the bone. LacZ expression was found in liver, heart and lung after i.m. injection of AAV-LacZ, showing a spread of the vector over the body. Anti-AAV neutral

Anterior wrist and medial malleolus: the optimal sites for tissue selection in electric death through hand-to-foot circuit pathway.

Specific morphological changes may be absent in some cases of electrocution shocked by the voltage of 220 V or lower. In this study, we attempted to demonstrate that the anterior wrist and medial malleolus were the optimal sites with promising and significant changes in electric death through the hand-to-foot circuit pathway. We established an electric shock rat model and observed histopathologic changes in the anterior wrist and medial malleolus. The results showed that the current intensities in the left anterior wrist and right medial malleolus were remarkably higher than those in the other

An experimental study on the effects of polymorphiasis in common eider ducklings.

Eight common eider (Somateria mollissima) ducklings were experimentally infected from 1 June through 13 June, 1995 with acanthocephalans (Polymorphus minutus) by allowing the birds to feed on Gammarus spp. (Gammarus oceanicus, G. salinus, G. zaddachi, and G. lacustris) containing acanthocephalan cystacanths. Uninfected Gammarus spp. were fed to a control group of seven ducklings. No mortality of ducklings occurred during the experiment. However, the infected ducklings gained weight more slowly than the control birds. After the 2 wk study period, the mean serum concentrations of total protein,
