We systematically review and characterize cases of tattoo-associated uveitis without systemic sarcoidosis, focusing on clinical presentation, diagnostic workup, management, and outcomes. We conducted a comprehensive literature search across PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase from 1969 to April 2025, following PRISMA guidelines. Eligible studies included case reports and series documenting tattoo-related uveitis in the absence of confirmed systemic sarcoidosis. Thirty-three studies encompassing 44 patients (86 eyes) were included. Most patients were male (75 %), with a m

Tattooing is a popular practice worldwide. Its origin dates back to the year 5000 BCE with a frozen mummy and travels across time through diverse cultures and places until it reaches the modern occidental world. Inks and materials used for tattooing are poorly controlled and carry potential risks of skin reactions. The procedure itself is also not innocuous. In this review, different types of tattoos are mentioned and associated dermatologic conditions are discussed. Unfortunately, treatment and removal procedures are often poor in effectiveness and lead to unwanted results. Combining differen

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Laser-pumped lasers enable driving a secondary wavelength through pumping with a primary device. Here we investigate the first 730 nm laser-pumped laser for efficacy in tattoo removal.
STUDY DESIGN/MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifteen subjects with 20 tattoos were enrolled to investigate the effect of a new 730 nm, titanium-sapphire laser-pumped laser at removing decorative tattoos. A total of four treatments were administered and photographic improvement of pre- and post-treatment cross-polarized digital images was evaluated by four blinded physician observers using an 1

Cutaneous infections can occur on tattoos. Tattoo-associated viral infections can be caused by human papillomavirus. A verruca vulgaris developed on the tattoo of a 44-year-old woman; the viral lesion appeared 21 years after she received the tattoo and had been increasing in size during the prior five years. Biopsy of the lesion not only confirmed the diagnosis but also removed most of the wart; the patient declined any additional treatment. In addition to verruca vulgaris (27 individuals), verruca plana (14 individuals) and human immunodeficiency virus-associated acquired epidermodysplasia ve

Laser and other light sources have been used to treat vascular and pigmented skin lesions and to remove tattoos and unwanted hair, with varying degrees of success and various side effects. It has not yet been reported that hair growth can occur as a side effect of such treatments. In this paper two cases are presented, one port wine stain and one tattoo, that were each treated several times with an intense pulsed light source (IPLS) for removal. Terminal hair, not present before treatment, partially developed in treated areas of both lesions. Local inflammatory reactions are believed to trigge

BACKGROUND: The widespread use of surgical lasers has found place in dermatologic and aesthetic surgery largely because they are well tolerated with a reduced incidence of postoperative haemorrhage and oedema, few associated adverse events and a high rate of patient satisfaction.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 1232 consecutive patients was performed on patients undergoing a range of laser treatments between January 2005 and January 2010. A mixed variety of indications for laser use included dermatologic surgeries for the removal of fibromas, angiomas and naevi, aesthetic su

PURPOSE: Sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) can be performed when node-positive disease is converted to node-negative status after neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NCT). Tattooing nodes might improve accuracy but supportive data are limited. This study aimed to investigate the feasibility of charcoal tattooing metastatic axillary lymph node (ALN) at presentation followed by SLNB after NCT in breast cancers.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty patientswith cytology-proven node metastases prospectively underwent charcoal tattooing at diagnosis. SLNB using dual tracers and axillary surgery after NCT were then

BACKGROUND: Q-switched lasers are conventionally used for the treatment of black tattoo. However, they require multiple sittings, and the response may be slow due to competing epidermal pigment in dark skin.
OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy of Q-switched Nd:YAG laser alone with its combination with ultrapulse CO2 for the removal of black tattoo.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty patients with black tattoo were randomized into two groups viz., group A and group B. Group A was treated with QS Nd:YAG laser (1064 nm) alone, and group B received combination of ablative ultrapulse CO2 followed by fix

INTRODUCTION: Corneal tattooing is a noninvasive technique which appears relatively well-tolerated in the medium term. We report the cases of 3 patients with a significant change in the color of their tattoos performed over 5 years previously.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Three patients with a history of intracorneal tattooing several years previously were studied because of a significant change from their initial color. Each patient's file was reviewed with analysis of slit lamp photographs, OCT and specular microscopy.
RESULTS: All three patients experienced a significant color change in their ta

BACKGROUND: Three cases, including one case report and two clinical images, have been reported of extraintestinal or peritoneal black maculae detected at laparoscopy after colonoscopic tattooing, presumably from intraperitoneal spillage of India ink during tattooing.
AIMS: Report three cases of inadvertent extraintestinal tattooing from endoscopic tattooing of intestinal lesions, provide histologic evidence for the presumed pathophysiology, and promulgate recommendations to prevent this complication.
METHODS: Three patients underwent endoscopic tattooing of intestinal lesions using India ink

BACKGROUND: Awareness of accidental tattoos after iron injections with paravenous leakage is low. No larger patient cohorts have been analyzed. The lesions are a burden to the patients. The only known treatment is laser therapy.
OBJECTIVE: To characterize the clinical appearance and development of iron-induced tattoos and to demonstrate safe and efficient removal with quality-switched (QS) and picosecond lasers.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The authors conducted a retrospective systematic analysis on patients who presented at the Dermatology Department of the University Hospital of Zurich between

Tattoos are defined as the intentional or accidental deposit of pigment into the skin. These pigments have been associated with various dermatoses such as allergic contact dermatitis, lichenoid dermatitis, photoinduced reactions, and granulomatous, sarcoid and pseudolymphomatous reactions. The objective of this report was to describe the various types of reactions to pigments and the importance of recognizing them clinically. Two cases are reported: one of lichenoid dermatitis resulting from a reaction to the red pigment of a tattoo and the other of a pseudolymphoma resulting from a reaction t

BACKGROUND: Multi-colored and even black tattoos often require more than one wavelength to remove the target pigment. The authors report here a novel alexandrite laser with two Nd:YAG laser handpieces pumped by the alexandrite treatment beam enabling the delivery of three wavelengths from a single device.
OBJECTIVE: To describe and evaluate the effectiveness of a novel Q-switched laser-pumped laser for treating tattoos.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty tattoos in 14 subjects were treated at four-week intervals using a combination of available wavelengths (532, 755 and 1064 nm) as determined by

Microblading is a rapidly expanding technique in cosmetic and medical tattooing, used for eyebrow correction and conditions of hair loss. Tattooing is performed by hand using a special blade; tiny cuts in the outer skin are filled with dark pigment to simulate a natural hair. Indications, the technique, and the microblading procedure step-by-step are considered in what follows. Details on client selection and a range of pitfalls are discussed. The leading application of microblading is cosmetic tattooing of the eyebrows adding pigmented "hairstrokes" to the natural brow area. Tattooed "hairstr

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer and subsequent mastectomy result in significant physical and emotional changes, including damaged body image, compromised sense of femininity, diminished self-esteem, and profound experiences of grief and loss. While reconstruction procedures are routinely offered, some women choose artistic mastectomy tattoos as an alternative means of reclaiming their bodies and reconstructing identity.
OBJECTIVE: Grounded in the Dual Process Model of Coping with Bereavement, this study explored how women utilize post-mastectomy tattoos as coping mechanisms and meaning-making proce

Patients with allergic tattoo reactions are burdened with itch and have a reduced quality of life. Conservative treatment is often insufficient and little is known about treatment options to remove the responsible allergen. We aimed to address the effectiveness and safety of ablative laser therapy including measurement of patient's satisfaction, in patients with allergic reactions to tattoos. A retrospective study was conducted including patients with allergic tattoo reactions who were treated with a 10,600 nm ablative CO2 laser, either by full-surface ablation or fractional ablation. Clinical

AIM: To investigate the ultrastructural appearance and the deposition pattern of dye particles in long term non-metallic corneal tattooing.
METHODS: Two tattooed human corneas were obtained by keratoplasty. One corneal button was fixed in Karnovsky's solution and the other in Trumps' solution. Both corneas were divided and processed for conventional light (LM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Five additional formalin fixed corneas with tattoos were retrieved from paraffin for TEM. The time between tattoo and removal of the corneal button/enucleation ranged from 7 to 61 years. All s

Since laser treatment of tattoos is the favored method for the removing of no longer wanted permanent skin paintings, analytical, biokinetics and toxicological data on the fragmentation pattern of commonly used pigments are urgently required for health safety reasons. Applying dynamic headspace-gas chromatography with mass spectrometric detection (DHS-GC/MS) and comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled to time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GCxGC-ToF-MS), we identified 1,2-benzene dicarbonitrile, benzonitrile, benzene, and the poisonous gas hydrogen cyanide (HCN) as main fragment

The Q-switched ruby laser (694 nm, 25-40 nsec) is an effective and safe therapeutic device for the treatment of tattoos and well-defined, benign, pigmented epidermal and dermal lesions. Because of its selective mode of action, dermal pigments of natural and artificial origin are destroyed photothermically and removed without scar. This method is exceptionally suited for the elimination of lay and professional tattoos, traumatic tattoos, and permanent makeup. Other frequent indications include benign pigmented lesions such as lentigines, freckles, café-au-lait spots, seborrheic keratosis, and B
