Association between pattern of team sport participation from adolescence to young adulthood and mental health.

We examined relationships between pattern of team sport participation during the transition from adolescence to young adulthood (ie, non-participants, initiators, discontinuers, sustainers) and indicators of mental health. Data on team sport participation and mental health from high school to young adulthood were drawn from the longitudinal NDIT study. After controlling for demographics, physical activity, and previous mental health, one-way MANCOVA and ANCOVAs indicated that pattern of team sport participation was associated with stress, F(2,706) =8.28, p < .01, and coping, F(2,706) = 10.66,

Acute effect of inspiratory resistive loading on sprint interval exercise performance in team-sport athletes.

This study examined acute effects of inspiratory resistive loading (IRL) during rest intervals on sprint interval exercise (SIE) performance. In a randomized crossover design, nine collegiate basketball players performed IRL (15 cmH2O) or passive recovery (CON) at 5-min rest intervals during and immediately after 6 sets of a 30-s SIE test. Performance, muscular oxygenation of vastus lateralis, blood lactate and pH were measured at each condition. Blood lactate at 5-min (-20.5 %) and 20-min (-21.3 %) after SIE were significantly lower in IRL than in CON. The pH at 5-min after SIE was significan

The complex and bidirectional interaction between sex hormones and exercise performance in team sports with emphasis on soccer.

A constant topic reported in the lay press is the effect of sex hormones on athletic performance and their abuse by athletes in their effort to enhance their performance or to either boost or sidestep their hard, protracted, and demanding training regimens. However, an issue that it is almost never mentioned is that the athletic training itself affects the endogenous production of androgens and estrogens, while also being affected by them. Among sports, soccer is a particularly demanding activity, soccer players needing to possess high levels of endurance, strength, and both aerobic and anaero

Relationships between functional performance, body composition, and biochemical markers of inflammation in young men who play team sports.

Movement quality and postural control are crucial for performance and injury prevention in team-sport athletes. Although FMS and YBT are commonly used, their ability to predict injury risk is limited when used alone. Therefore, integrating functional assessment with body composition and biochemical markers may provide a more comprehensive evaluation of athletes' functional status. The study aimed to investigate the relationships among functional performance, body composition, and chosen biochemical markers in young men's team-sport athletes. The study included 48 young Polish professional athl

The Effect of Temporary Group Identity on Adolescent Social Mindfulness Decisions: An Empirical Study Using Team Sports Contexts.

Social mindfulness entails the consideration of the interests of others while respecting their autonomy. Although long-term group identity generates in-group favoritism in social mindfulness decisions, the effect of temporary group identity on social mindfulness remains to be validated. This study examined this effect by recruiting a convenience sample of 74 adolescents from a youth basketball club, who were randomly assigned to either an in-group or out-group decision-making condition. A basketball game scenario was used to establish temporary group identities, referencing the Minimal Group p

Sex differences in injury rates in team-sport athletes: A systematic review and meta-regression analysis.

BACKGROUND: Team-sport players have a particularly high injury risk. Although female sex is considered a risk factor, it is still unknown whether female and male team-sport players, in fact, differ in their injury rates. We aimed to compare injury rates between female and male players by systematically reviewing and meta-analyzing injury surveillance studies of both sexes in order to evaluate sex-specific differences in team-sport injuries. METHODS: Studies that prospectively collected injury data for high-level female and male players (age ≥16 years) in basketball, field hockey, football (so
