A major concern of public health authorities is to also encourage adults to be exposed to enriched environments (sensory and cognitive-motor activity) during the pandemic lockdown, as was recently the case worldwide during the COVID-19 outbreak. Games for adults that require physical activity, known as exergames, offer opportunities here. In particular, the output of the gaming industry nowadays offers computer games with extended reality (XR) which combines real and virtual environments and refers to human-machine interactions generated by computers and wearable technologies. For example, pla

A structured review using the PRISMA guidelines, MeSH keywords and eight health databases was conducted (1990 to March 2021). Telerehabilitation research evidence from the Middle East and North Africa region (MENA) was summarized. Twelve studies from Iran, Israel, Morocco, and Saudi Arabia met inclusion criteria; nearly all had been published within the past five years. Methodological quality was moderate to good in the four randomized controlled trials, five cohort-studies and three cross-section surveys. There were seven intervention studies in cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, neurology or b

Cardiac rehabilitation through center-based programs is an effective multicomponent intervention for the secondary prevention of cardiovascular diseases. Despite the benefits it brings, patients' participation in rehabilitation programs remains low. In this work, the latest relevant literature regarding remotely monitored cardiac telerehabilitation (TR) was reviewed considering its efficiency and utilization. The main objective was to assess whether TR has the potential to be an appropriate alternative form of rehabilitation. A total of 105 publications on this topic were screened out of 747 f

Telemedicine represents a valid aid in rehabilitation process. A remote therapist in a telerehabilitation program could monitor daily motion activity and assign motion-rehabilitation tools on the basis of the fall risk. However, one problem is detection of the fall risk itself. Web-based video-camera images alone do not help the remote assessment of the fall risk using the most commonly used qualitative tests based on visual observation. A novel wearable system to assess fall risk in telerehabilitation has been proposed based on an Inertial Measurement Unit and a medical protocol. It provides

BACKGROUND: Telerehabilitative services have been increasingly used in recent years, raising questions about their effectiveness. In musculoskeletal disorders, evidence supports telerehabilitation but methodological quality of evidence is limited and focused on lower limb disorders. Hence, this systematic review aimed to assess the effectiveness of telerehabilitation in upper limb musculoskeletal disorders.
METHODS: We conducted electronic searches in MEDLINE, Embase, and AMED (up until 11/27/2024), complemented by hand searches. Randomized (RCTs) and non-randomized studies of interventions (

In recent years, advances in medical technology have shortened the length of hospital stays for patients with heart disease. However, concerns about recurrence after discharge may lead patients to restrict their activities. Cardiac rehabilitation is particularly important for preventing recurrence and improving quality of life. Until now, outpatient rehabilitation has been the standard approach. However, research is advancing to enable patients to continue rehabilitation safely at home through telerehabilitation. Tele-cardiac rehabilitation involves real-time, two-way communication with physic

BACKGROUND: Tinnitus is a highly prevalent symptom affecting 10%-20% of the adult population. Most patients with tinnitus have chronic tinnitus, which can directly or indirectly disrupt their daily life and negatively affect the health-related quality of life. Therefore, patients with tinnitus are frequently in need of costly and time-consuming treatments. As an answer, telerehabilitation interventions are on a rise to promote self-management in patients with tinnitus and reduce their dependency on in-person care.
OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aimed to provide an overview of the research

Stroke, a leading cause of long-term disability worldwide, manifests as motor, speech language, and cognitive impairments, necessitating customized rehabilitation strategies. In this context, telerehabilitation (TR) strategies have emerged as promising solutions. In a multi-center longitudinal pilot study, we explored the effects of a multi-domain TR program, comprising physiotherapy, speech therapy, and neuropsychological treatments. In total, 84 stroke survivors (74 analyzed) received 20 tailored sessions per domain, addressing individual impairments and customized to their specific needs. P

One of the most common conditions that affect activities of daily living and make them significantly more difficult to perform is low back pain (LBP). As a result, it is essential to treat LBP at an early stage. Particularly in geographically remote areas where there is a shortage of medical professionals and a lack of rehabilitation services, telerehabilitation is considered a potential alternative. Hence, this case report represents the impact of telerehabilitation on LBP in a 32-year-old female corporate worker who presented to the out-patient department of physiotherapy with the chief comp
